I really like the way Garnt's criteria for the 3x3 is here. They aren't based off of critical acclaim, but what defines each person, and based off of that you can tell what kind of person they might be. It's way more interesting and fun this way.

I always treat Isekai as Junk food anime, but Mushoku Tensei flipped the script or should I stay stuck to the script. Cause I always think it is very disrespectful to the World where the MC was Isekaied to just to get owned by some random dude on Earth. It's almost as if the world is made for that MC, and everything he does is justified by the world. Whereas, Mushoku Tensei said no no, you are not here to own this world, you are here to change yourself, This is your last chance.

Honestly, I just find battle series to be better junk food. Maybe it’s just me not being a fan of media junk food, because I still need interesting characters and well written stories in order to enjoy something. Like Yu Yu Hakusho is just so entertaining, that it’s really hard not to just enjoy passively, despite being excellently written.

When I see 3 X 3s like this I realise how normie my anime tastes are, there are so many of the popular underground/cultured animes that I skip and not because I have an issue with the concept of niche anime, but moreso that they mostly have story structures that can't hold my attention, maybe I'm ADD, or they have a heavy emphasis on super mean characters in the main cast that I just detest too much to keep watching the show they're in

My 3x3 would probably have AOT on it as it's the first show I watched and over the years it has turned into what I would consider a masterpiece. Next would be Tokyo Ghoul, this is my guilty pleasure of sorts, I watched it in the early days of my anime journey and it is what got me into reading manga, the TG manga in particular was a huge part of my life for literal years and it also got me reading other great manga like Berserk. Next up would be March Comes in Like a Lion. This show was the first step for me to start getting my life back together, I had moved away for university and it wasn't going well. I couldn't find motivation, I hardly had any friends since I would drop off the map for extended periods of time and that would make it even harder to reach out again... This show just hit so hard in a time when I was at my lowest... Next up might be 5 centimeters per Second, it's a movie I didn't like when I first watched it, but over the years and as I've accumulated more life experiences it just gets more and more relatable as sad as that might be. Middle spot goes to Steins;Gate, probably my favorite anime of all time, absolutely love this show. Probably one of the most cohesive and best time-travel stories of all time in any media. It is also heartbreaking to watch Okabe as the front he's put up slowly falls apart as he descends into hopelessness. Let's keep this theme of sad shit going with Your Lie in April, my favorite of the "tearjerkers" out there. It's close with Clannad, but for me it just beats out Clannad by a hair. Next up is Made in Abyss, I just love the entire concept and the juxtaposition of the "happy go lucky" characters and visuals of the show and the grotesque and fucked up shit that happens. Now that's enough depression, so next is Konosuba which is probably my favorite comedy anime, although I did consider Grand Blue and Nichijou in this spot as well... And that leads us to the last remaining spot, which goes to the one and only... Gigguks favorite anime, FMA:B. Great story, great characters, great everything.

Kinda sad he didn't analyze the "Gurren Lagann part", I honestly think that it's way more thought out than what people think, probably because it presents itself in a "dumb" way and many don't bother to scratch the surface. Also it seems we have pretty comparable taste considering I'm loving Vinland Saga s2 and Love is War, I'm also trying to read Spice and Wolf LN but as a non native english speaker I find some difficulty because of the abundance of refined/sophisticated terms. After some thought, my 3 x 3 would be: Chihayafuru | Monogatari series | Katanagatari Kill La Kill | March Comes In Like A Lion | Gurren Lagann We Never Learn | Macross | Love Hina Macross represents one of the first anime that I obsessed over as a teenager in the 90's while Love Hina covers my early 20's. There's a sizable time jump in there as I didn't really start watching anime again until around 2018 and 2019. Chihayafuru and Katanagatari are two shows in particular that I found out about via Trash Taste. My love for We Never Learn was greatly enhanced by reading the manga as well.

The Haruhi TV series is still unsurpassed over 15 years later. The Monogatari Series & Tatami Galaxy are the only two anime I consider to be on the same level. Honestly KyoAni's equivalent to Evangelion of the 2000s. Massively influential & ahead of its time yet so divisive/controversial. The public perception would've been more positive if they adapted the other 75% of the novels.

It's simply about their age lol. It's the difference between at what age he watched Charlotte vs at what age he is watching Domestic girlfriend. He was there for more interesting stories back then, he was not a man who simply wanted train wrecks. Also, Shows tend to affect different people differently. You can have literally the same story but a different style of production, designing, dialogue writing...etc and it will get different types of audience. I haven't seen either of the two but if I have to guess a difference, Charlotte characters look like school kids and all, while domestic girlfriend characters look like sexy older types. It's not the actual character age... It's the art style. And even art styles can affect your enjoyment

My 3x3 would probably look something like this: Ergo Proxy Gundam 00 Death Note Grand Blue Steins;Gate Horimiya Code Geass GITS Fate/Zero I have deliberately not included movies since I have honestly never seen a bad Anime film. Otherwise this list would be full of only them. I have also not included other very popular shows which I also have enjoyed quite a lot but they don't hold as much of a significance for ME as the above do, such as Vinland Saga, FMAB, HunterxHunter, Gurren Lagaan, ReZero, etc.

Maybe its me..but I never understood why you would catagorize anime like this..especially Isekai..like what does it fking matter if the protag comes from another world? What matters is what happens to that protagonist. Like in Re:Zero for example..the mention of Subarus family or life before he was transported into that world is minimal and after the first arc..the influences from that world are also minimal in any regard. Just doesn't give the anime justice if you just catagorize it as Isekai or Romance when it does so much more, just as an example.

I have basic opinions Jojo got my into anime properly , i always love it even did my gcse speech on it/ attack on titan I had been watching anime for a couple years before i watched attack on titan, and from episode one i have never been as invested in any series ever. / hunter x hunter Also one of my first, chimera ant arc is a legendary experience and not overrated in the slightest. In fact it is underrated compared to yorknew / Steins gate The best anime ever and my personal favourite, best plot evere written and best protagonist in anything ever/ Angel Beats I cried. A LOT. Angel beats will always have this nostalgic feeling for me, of how sad it is./ Edgerunners The same as Angel beats, except this Anime perhaps broke me almost more Love is war The best comedy and romance anime ever, with the best character ever Ishigami in it/ end of eva The third impact. One of the best scenes in any movie, it messed up my brain at the time in a good way i genuinely love it/ prison school Masterpiece of fiction. I don't know what other anime can be so tense, funny and sexual all at the same time. Honourable mention to bleach, the first anime I ever watched because it was anime and not pokemon or totoro which I just watched. Put on Asterisk by orange range and I'm 12 again .

Way too late to the party, but here are my 9 picks in no order at all: Evangelion TV original Haibane Renmei His and Her Circumstances Madoka Higurashi no Nako Koro Ni S1 Serial Experiments Lain Perfect Blue Voice of a Distant Star 5 Cm per Second And I HAVE to mention Shinsekai Yori, because it's the best hard sci-fi anime I've ever seen, a genre that's incredibly rare. And the only thing I don't usually mention in my first conversation is that I don't like shounen. Used to when I was very young, not for a very long time, now... mostly. Because there are a few great Shounen, like FMAB and Trigun. And for me, Your Name was the beginning of Mako Shinkai's decadence, when he started giving in to studio pressure and do more mainstream thing, not pure genius works like the movies before it.

I have no guilty pleasures that are actually bad. Most, if not all bad anime aren’t enjoyable. Code Geass is definitely a guilty pleasure, but it still has a base level quality. I would also be lying if I put a bad anime on my 3x3, just to fit in, and that’s not genuine. Unfortunately, every lies to say guilty pleasures are something they enjoy fully.

A guilty pleasure is something that is bad but you enjoy it because it's fun to watch. Hence the word "guilty" in it. But most of what you said I agree with. I don't get this thing Garnt and the rest of the boys think where there's favorites and anime you think are ten out of tens as if they're separate things. I don’t get why people are confused by the concept of favourites being different to quality. Something like “Tokyo Revengers”, for example, contains plot holes and sometimes an underwhelming main character, but it’s still one of my favourite anime because it’s really enjoyable to me for the characters and emotions that come with it. I enjoyed Fairy Tail, Akame Ga Kill and Another too but I wouldn’t call them “great anime”

Also many of my favorites are 8 or 9 out of tens instead of 10/10, even if most of them are 10/10. I don’t get how someone could have their favorite be objectively the best.

I think that's the best anime I ever seen that's a ten out of ten. Another one is mushishi that's a ten out of ten and one of my favorites. I still think about these shows even after I watch them.

Steins;Gate, Kill la Kill, K-On, Psycho Pass, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Anohana, Hunter x Hunter, FMA Brotherhood, Death Note, Madoka Magica, HeartCatch PreCure! Etc. 2014-2019 had like Attack on Titan, Re:Zero and Mob Psycho 100, and a few others. 2019 was like the year anime came back with Kaguya-Sama, Dororo, Fruits Basket, and Demon Slayer which ushered in the excellent era we are in now.

Speed Racer: first anime I ever watched, bonding time with my weeb aunt Yu-Gi-Oh!: First anime I watched on TV week to week, talked about it at school, was THE show for me for years Ranma 1/2: First anime I watched after being away from anime since GX ruined Yugioh, still my favorite anime of all time. Death Note: really made me think about a ton of stuff morally and I spent months thinking about what I would do with one/if it is moral Hentai!: A fan made anime about some girls who talk about horny things. OP is still the best, most touching thing. "What's wrong with being a pervert?" Sakura Trick: got me into yuri anime, and it is still the best yuri anime anyone ever made. Charger Girl Ju-den Chan: the anime that got me to watch anime with males in it again after tsunderes basically ruined any non CGDCT anime for me SYD: Sex Jokes the anime is the one that really spoke to me and one that I refreshed the anime pages for looking for when the next OVA came out Interspecies Reviewers: Still my most hyped show ever, it was the first anime that I anticipated as I was a manga reader of it and huge fan of Amahara
