Gilbert Arenas talked about how the NBA changed the rules to accommodate for the Europeans. The NBA has been trying to soften the game since the 90s. 1990: The NBA implements the flagrant foul. This rule was established to prevent the Bad Boy Pistons from hurting the Superstars such as Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, etc. 1997: The NBA abolishes the hand checking rule in an attempt to increase scoring throughout the league. These rules had absolutely nothing to do with Europeans. I know for a fact that the NBA was not promoting players such as Drazen Petrovic, Detlef Schremph, Vlade Divac, Arvydas Sabonis, or Peja Stojakovic.

The reason the NBA started to shop for foreign players was because you had a bunch of guys coming into the NBA straight out of high school or only spending a year or two in college that didn't know how to play the game cause their fundamentals were horrible that's why teams started to look outside the United States for players that's also why the rules change cause this guys couldn't shot the ball so the league had to make it easier for players to score

First off most of those Euro guys are playing against Pros at 14 so they have learned the game. Second, every one of these so called good NBA players are 1 and done so how the hell are they learning anything in Collage? And lastly there's only a handful of 2 way players in the NBA in pretty much every Era so that's a non starter

I remember years ago (was it around 10 or 12 years ago🤔, I'm not sure), I either read an article or heard on the radio or saw on tv, that as far as top white players in the NBA, there were possibly more recognizable, well-known white players from Europe than white American-born players. And the story was about how many European players reported racist comments from black NBA players toward them, such as "this is our game" , "you don't belong here", etc. Black players outwardly being very hostile and racist toward ths white European players was the jist of the story. But it got very little coverage. If the shoe was on ths other foot we all know it would finallt erupt into an orgy of violence, beatings, murders, rape, burning buildings in every American city over 250,000

The big reason there is no defense now is because of the warriors and mainly steph curry with the 3 point shot. Everyone loves to say how curry changed the game because of his shooting. Very true but a side effect of that was other teams/ players doing the same thing. If someone scores on you no worries just go down the court and jack up a 3.

A lot of the comments really show how the majority don't understand basketball, lol. The game opened up when more international players came in (European players). The defense changed because of the shooting and the space that came from the shooting. If you take the international players out...then the game will revert back to the 90s. And why the hell would the keague allow that to happen? There'san entire international market the NBA is trying to take advantage of. I heard the edited clips from several media platforms 1st, & then decided to watch the entire segment. The Gil dude literally said send the European players away or stop complaining about defense...because the game changed when the big influx of international players came in. Now he did say European players were not atletic & very slow....plus the guards and fowards were very bad at defense, too. So I get why some people would feel a certain way about that specific comment. Everything else is up to how well a person's comprehension skills are (if they aren't just watching edited clips). Also, Whitlock never broke down where the Gil guy was being dishonest. He & Kim literally cosigned wveerything Gil said. America is full of insecure men smh. Lastly, I hope everyone playing the race card realizes that have of the European players are not what we call "white" in America lol. There’s 130 “foreign” / International born players in the NBA. A record. Not all European born. There were European players, foreign players who were plenty good enough and great competitive players ~ Drazen, Sarunas… two very impactful players. I’m a hoops aficionado, or at least I was until the 2010’s. The “Evolution “ of athleticism, skill (individual) have replaced team play. I’m not a believer in the idea that players are far more athletic, or more skilled. ~ that’s a completely different argument. Non athletic guys can be excellent team defenders, but the team game is not emphasized, defense isn’t emphasized enough in American Basketball. Fundamentals are gone. Team play isn’t valued. Interesting the teams, and players that are successful play “team” ball and are among the best teams in defensive efficiency ~ they give EFFORT, and they compete. It’s only 8-10 teams who are worth watching on a consistent basis. Good coaching, team oriented players, who give effort and compete.

As a former fan of British soccer, I kind of agree with him. Bringing in foreigners - players from Continental Europe and Africa, owners from America - really destroyed the British style. It used to be max aggression - very physical and high tempo. Now it's soft and slow - and everything has less intensity, including the fan culture. A 'multi-culture' is not real. You either have a culture or you don't.
