Gill Net Hurts Seal

A new color for our Leatherman Raptor Scissors - but, unfortunately, an old and very unpopular entanglement: gill net. We sound like a broken record when we repeat ourselves again and again. Gill nets are illegal in Namibia's part of the ocean. While seals are good swimmers, and some bigger ones might reach international waters, we suspect most gill nets are used in Namibia's territory. The existence of gill net entanglements shows that existing laws are not effective as long as there is no policing paired with severe fines and more. 🦭

That poor seal! That gill net wound was horrible...as Naude said, "they're always bad". Thank you all for removing it so gently and quickly. Hearing both Naude and Wally say "sorry" is so sad.😥

As a keen fisherman but also an animal lover that, since watching your videos, has decided that my recreational pleasure should not impact on the welfare of my fellow creatures. Although I'm extremely cautious how I fished, I've decided that I'm no longer warranted to take the risk of harming these adorable creatures. So I no longer fish. Thanks for all you do, guys. Love you. 💜🇬🇧

We believe in you. We believe you can fish, hunt, feed your family, without this kind of damage. All you have to do is care. At one time, I had 7 kids. I took them swimming, lake, creek, stream, ocean, as often as I could. They had to pay for the trip with 10 pieces of trash each. Oh, I heard it all. “ that’s not mine”, and “ I didn’t do it”, and “ why do I have to clean up after other people”. 10 pieces, or you didnt go on the next trip.

Good on you, Stevie. If you’re no longer comfortable going fishing, quitting is the only way. Though being super thorough in cleaning up after yourself is a good solution , accidents do happen, and lines just break sometimes. That’s the reality of it. So, everyone has to decide for themselves. 🤷‍♀️

I wonder, would that seal be able to understand she’s free of the entanglement thanks to you? Most probably she’ll remember the pain you caused her when helping her. Which is sad, but we know and thank you all, OCN. Great day for you all.

Some seals seem to understand, as a few of them have sometimes paused and looked back. But for most it's their survival instinct (as it should) kicking in to get away.
@13vatra

Unfortunately, it's probably for the best that most of them remember it as a bad experience. Keeps the wild animals wild and also makes the lives of poachers and the like more difficult.

I would imagine that almost all of the seals are scared by the experience, even the ones who figure out that the apes are helping them. Even we humans have problems when something we know is good for us, takes us out of our comfort zone. The only seals who seem to not be scared are the babies, sometimes, who don't really understand what's happening. But, it's fine. It's not about getting the seals' approval; it's seeing to it that they thrive.

@@ArDeeMee oh the for sure do. I have a few EMT friends and one of them had to argue with someone who had something sticking out of them. It was like a screwdriver or something, not something small like a staple. Ended up waiting for the person to pass out at which point consent is assumed.
