The biggest advantage of Gillette is its brand name. When i use a Gillette shaving blade, i feel pampered, i feel i am giving myself a special treatment.. even though razor blades from other brands provide the same features. And the whole "The Best A Man Can Get" line used by them really works, like the "Marlboro Man" line.

Amazingly insightful. Read many books, but the razor blade business model, along with great storytelling of gilette makes this video so insightful and amazing. Thanks a lot! 😊 One more insight I would like to add : *Juicero* company could have been a success, if they used the razor blade model... i.e, selling the machine at very low cost (or free - at a loss) and could have charged consistently subscription for the juice packets. Instead, they sold the machine so expensive *($699)* ...that when customers found out that one can extract the juice just by hand pressing as well.... it led to it's downfall...and eventually, death. So, deciding the model for a business is ultra important!

While I appreciate the effort went into making this video, this is a classic example of a Red Herring story used by B-schools to boost their importance in a company's success. Gillette success mainly comes from their R&D in their blade manufacturing. Anyone who has used Gillette and other brands can notice the difference in other blades when it touches their skin. The thickness, long lasting sharpness and corrosion resistance of their blades are light years ahead of competition. Some marketing tricks do play role in increasing profitability and market share, but it will only take you till the first purchase. A long history such as Gillette is only attained by the unsung heroes toiling in their R&D labs, while watching the silver tongued, B-School graduated marketing folks take the credit!
