The older I get, the harder it is to reconnect with that feeling of blissful happiness that came with being a kid. But a song can open that door for just a second and fill my heart with a gust of happiness I thought long gone. Even if it’s only for a moment, sometimes a moment is all you need.

My mom died about a year ago. This was her favorite song. We would hear it on the radio from time to time all through me growing up. Today was the first time I heard it since she passed. I was in the middle of the store and had to hide in the diaper aisle while I cried. But I when I heard "cause all I really wants to be with you" I felt like she was making me hear that line, so i knew she was with me. I miss her and this song is solidified as super special to me and will be for the rest of my life. I love and miss you mom.

And he’s living after the credits stopped rolling. “ if I hadn’t blown the whole thing years ago, I’d still be her with you...” no one ever shows what happens to the guys that lose the girl. +TheNewAmericanMedia I always thought it was "you can trust me not to think" - as you know he was an impulsive ex-boyfriend who did stupid things hence the reason they're broken up - and he's sayiing 'yeah I'm predictable in that respect - you can trust that I'll do stupid things...but I also won't sleep around and if you don't expect too much - you might just be satisfied with me.'
@baka-crossing9 жыл бұрын
+nativesun It was originally "You can trust me not to drink" because Hopkins had a very visible alcohol problem all through the band's timeline. The use of "trust me not to drink" would have been grossly ironic because it's obviously something Hopkins would pay lip service to, but not adhere. It further didn't make any sense to use "drink" over "think" as the song itself starts off very early with "and I'm in no shape for drivin'" suggesting to say "you can trust me not to drink" is nothing more than, well, drunk talk.

One of the deepest songs ever. This singer is singing about regret. He passed up what went well for him, but thought there was a better route. But there was no better option. He sings "hey jealousy" cause he is jealous of what of the fact that someone else could have what he could have had. He can't let go. He tries to plead and pleads by making promises, but the best is to not get one's hopes up, because big promises can't be kept. The past is gone but something might be found to take its place, he hopes to replace the foul mistakes he made. He hopes for a something to start.

I personally prefer now to then. I love having access to all the books, education, music, shopping, talking/connecting to similar minded folks all over the world with ease, and movies to stream at your fingertips. Tech is just a tool that can be good or bad depending like food. Good food can feed your body and make it strong, and junk food can damage the body. Lol, I also don't miss being stuck just listening to the local radio that repeated the same top ten songs over and over and over again! If you wanted variety you had to have the funds to buy CDs...and there might not even be more than one song you even end up liking lol! I grew up a bit poor, so I prefer having more money now as an adult too. I feel like the societal pressure to conform to a very narrow standard of being was way more intense too back then compared to now which was another negative. The only things I miss from back then was having a young and healthy body before I was injured and became partially disabled, and the cost of living being much less!

We had the internet back in the 90s. It was dial-up, and you had to scream anytime someone picked up the phone and cut off your AOL connection after it just took 3 hours to load one web page, but still! We also had cell phones. They were the Zach Morris, brick-sized ones that had the huge antenna sticking out of the top and you had to have an entire duffel bag to carry it around, so beepers were much more convenient. We had all those things in the 90s, but people didn't carry them around attached to their hands 24/7 like today. People could actually focus and pay attention without having ADHD brain from the constant dopamine hits from the instant gratification that comes with never having to wait for anything.

Life seemed so much more full of promise before September 11, 2001. Since then it has been war, hate and bitterness, and plague. Respect each other and treat people with dignity and respect. Don’t let the haters drag you down. Peace to all!
@jessicanavarro52823 жыл бұрын
I agree! My brothers went to war because of 9/11 they're not the same...lots of PTSD. Seen things kids (because they were only 18 they were still kids) shouldn't have seen. Its a disconnect from the world. We lost our bond. They no longer have a spark and faith in people. Mom and I pray for them to find the happiness but it's tough. My brother is having twins next year so I'm praying that will bring life back into him. The other one has since drowned himself into work. Has 3 kids numbs himself from all the hate and diversity. So sad but im hopeful. This world still has time to change! Always look for the one good thing it will bring you back to life and let love flow in!
@glennarnold41083 жыл бұрын
Lack of promise has nothing to do with this song or any music for that matter. Enjoy the music when you hear it and apply the lyrics according to what they were written for and you’ll always get more out of it. 09-11-2001 was not the initial turning point in the USA as the event itself was somewhat inevitable. The world the USA once knew changed shortly following the death of JFK and has been a roller coaster for most in it since. Those thinking the world changed after 09-11 actually was simply awakened to the highs and lows of life.

@miuramike83109 жыл бұрын
+EQOAnostalgia If this is nostalgia, then sign me up! It's certainly better than what passes for music today. I'm in my 40's and I grew up listening to some great music! My parents were hippies who went to Monterey Pop in '67, saw Hendrix numerous times, and I was 2 months from being born when my they went to Woodstock. The 60's , 70's , and 80's music was a great time, but after about 94 I think the music scene took a big shit. I would rather listen to the dreaded "disco" music of the 70's than pop, rap or hip-hop! If I was a teenager today, I would probably be another tragic suburban white kid driving his parents BMW who thinks he's from the ghetto. And the tattoo craze has gone mental. Nothing like a temporarily good idea that lasts forever! As Bill Maher said "She might be the girl with the dragon tattoo today, but in the future she will be the old lady with the tattoo that's draggin'.
@Maialeen9 жыл бұрын
+EQOAnostalgia It's nostalgia most likely if we ignore all these other enthusiastic kinda misguided responses and look at it realistically. This is a bit before my time, when this came out I was a very little kid. But I've caught myself romanticizing my teenage years in every aspect and then I stopped and thought about it...I didn't love that time at all and couldn't wait for it to end. I'm not saying you didn't possibly love yours. But the fact is, that's what people love to do. Look at their times past with rose colored glasses and remember it better than it was. That's why everyone believes that literally everything was better when they were young or they wish they were born earlier...cause it's always something else that was "better back then". And then they whine about how there's no good music today even though we're overflowing with amazing bands and singers and we can access their music easier than ever. We're seriously drowning in all the good music we can access today. You can find it without even making a huge effort, that's how easy it is. Bands get fans thanks to the internet, they don't even have to be on tv. Teenagers today will reminisce about how music from their generation was "real music, unlike this crap today." Circle of life. This is just good music, no matter what year.

Tracy Langley Would have consented to your request but your snide retort at the end killed my motivation. I do not like snide remarks and will attempt to use that word in my everyday vernacular. Additionally, do you realize that your sensibilities are largely lost in the sea of refuse that is KZbin...stupid.
@EgitelGaming11 жыл бұрын
richard splichal That was hardly a snide retort, and you deserved being called out. Both your refusal to acknowledge the word being offensive, and then deciding to continually say it more just out of spite, merely because someone said the word "seriously", show that you are an incredibly immature person, and perhaps not ready to be a parent. Furthermore, justifying your immaturity because "LULZ YOUTUB" is just sad. The reason KZbin is a vile cesspool of humanity is because of attitudes like yours, and frankly you're just setting a terrible example for your daughter to follow. If you get that offended over the word 'seriously' how do you think people who are effected by mental retardation (both people who suffer from it, and those who are family members or caretakers of those that do) every day feel about your callous use of the word? We all use words that are offensive, but that doesn't mean we don't deserve being called out when we do. Own your mistakes, think before you speak, and realize that you are far from being in the right here.
@PrimalKadmon11 жыл бұрын
Egitel First off, depending on a person's interpretation of how the word "seriously" can be inflected, a person can derive a mocking affectation from it, but honestly I don't care about the semantics. You mistake offense with indifference. Also, I wasn't justifying my immaturity, I was responding in jest to hide my disdain of people who think that their sensibilities are something that all people should abide. I try not intentionally hurt people, but I will disregard the sensibilities of people that have an air of assumed importance, especially those that confront me in the manner that you have. To put it simply I was trying to be cheeky. How you view maturity means little to me because of what I believe and what I hold important to me. You've made more than a few assumptions about my character, which needless to say could be equally judgmental as anything I have said. You know me as much the few written words I have made and sought to illustrate my character akin to that of a vile cesspool. I have my doubts that you would apologize for the offenses you give insomuch as would buffer your great and wise character. You want to know what is sad...the destruction of natural habitats for human habitation, starvation and internment camps in DPNK, exploitation of environment and children for cheaper comodities, the AIDS epidemic in Africa, dismissal of basic human rights... Your designation of my behavior as sad is a gross misrepresentation of neoliberal political correctness. Good job making the world a better place by getting onto a KZbinr that doesn't know how to take things seriously, you've really changed the world.

richard splichal For someone who doesn't want to argue semantics, you're sure making a big deal out of "offense" vs "indifference". You can call it what you like, but choosing to do something you know is offensive, merely out of spite for such a small word (it is a small word, she could have been a lot more harsh than she was) shows that you did, in fact, find it offensive. If you were 'indifferent' to it, you would not have responded in the first place, nor found "disdain" for her "expressing her sensibilities". You're also being petty by saying you're going to use "that word in your everyday vernacular", just to get back at a random KZbinr who will never know the difference anyway. Which is, in fact, going out of your way to intentionally hurt people, despite your stating that you have no intention of doing so. The only person here that as an air of assumed importance is yourself, by assuming you're beyond reproach, and above the criticisms of your fellow man, even when you're clearly in the wrong. You are essentially throwing a well-worded temper tantrum in response to a single KZbin comment. Again, you can call it what you will. Don't mistake my intention, I couldn't care less about your original comment. It was your response to being called out about using an offensive word, that admittedly, most of us (including myself) use far too often. However, people don't typically lash out at someone for calling them out on it. Usually, they just apologize and move on with their lives, which you easily could have done. Also, I haven't made a single assumption about your character that you yourself did not provide the evidence for. Consider that most of the people reading your comments will have never met you, therefore it amounts to little more than a first impression. If in that impression you immediately come off as immature and petty, then most people are going to assume you're an immature and petty person. You might be an awesome person, that donates to charities around the world and is a champion for civil rights, but that's not what this is about. Also, I didn't illustrate your character as being a vile cesspool, I implied that your comments add to the vile cesspool of humanity that is KZbin. Everyone who has ever been to KZbin knows that it represents the worst in people, but that doesn't justify the behavior of anyone on it. They are all still responsible for their own words and actions. This last part is my favorite. It is just so rife with logical fallacies, I don't even know where to begin. Deflection, for example, always loved that one. Where you could have just simply apologized, or made your argument and moved on, you decide to bring up topics that are in no way related to or effected by the topic at hand. Politicians use this tactic all the time to avoid having to answer tough questions. Congratulations, you win. Sure, there are terrible things happening in the world, and not a single one of them justifies your behavior. Furthermore, a single person (or two, depending on how you look at it) calling someone out on KZbin, doesn't distract from any of those issues. This isn't something that's going to make the evening news, or cause countries to not send aid where it's needed, or whatever other possible scenario that could come from this. And yes, your behavior is sad, even if it's not on the same scale of sad as say, starving children in Africa.

Went out of my way to see them at the change of centuries, 2000, in downtown Phoenix, AZ. They were perfect AZ rock, with the Pisteleros opening. One of the most important moments of my life.

I feel sorry for anyone who didn't grow up in the '90s. This was peak MTV when they still cared about telling stories through videos.

From an older fan who nows how hard rock hits, this is great stuff. The "new" classics.

+Stephen Jones Nope. I do enjoy whimsically reminiscing to being a snot-nosed high school freshman when this popular, though.

I always find it amazing when one alcoholic throws another alcoholic out of the band, even though that alcoholic wrote EVERY good song on the album. RIP Doug Hopkins. You always rode the lightening in a way your mates could only dream of. They are in fact a tribute band: a tribute to you.
