YES! This is the issue I’ve been dealing with for months. My step-brother is set to get married in February and I’ve been pretty close with his fiancée. I was supposed to stand up in the wedding. We found out recently that my step-brother is a manipulative, abusive, toxic person and neither of them should be getting married and they definitely shouldn’t be bringing children into that unhealthy environment. He has pushed away all of his immediate family because we have all called both of them out on their lies and manipulation. I know my stepdad in particular has had a very hard time with it because it’s his son and he doesn’t want to believe that his son is this terrible person. Luckily, he’s able to see past it being his son and realize what is really happening and why their toxic relationship should not be supported. And Lord knows I told his fiancée these things. When she asked if I was still gonna be in the wedding, I told her no because her marriage is doomed to end in divorce but she doesn’t have the self respect to do what needs to be done. If you didn’t want the facts, you shouldn’t have asked. Not my fault you’re delusional and desperate🤷🏻♀️

I was in a wedding where I knew it wouldn't last, but she was my friend and she needed all the support she could get. They had kids, so I understood why she was doing it. Her and I had an honest conversation, so she was clear on where I stood. I was the last bridesmaid before she walked down the aisle. I turned and asked her if she was sure, because it wasn't too late. Her dad looked at her and affirmed my statement. She said she wanted to do it, so I marched. You can't make grown folks do what you think is best for them. Sometimes they just have to find out on their own.

C Mac right. But that’s like what Adrianne said. There’s a difference in having an opinion about if someone is going to last forever or not. And not being able to attend the wedding because you’re against it. Now the reason you’re against it might be one of the things that you listed. But if not, I think that the comment you replied to is pretty accurate. Like Adrianne said, you can’t see the sparks they feel.

Tam nailed it, I attended for her reasoning. I have DEFINITELY attended weddings that I knew were doomed, and sadly (in both cases) I was right. I just received an invite to one from a friend that is marrying a guy in Vegas in January. She is marrying a guy she met on Tinder, had a one night stand (in an alley against the wall), she moved him in to her house and he is CLEARLY using her. I will not be attending. 9:11 Exactly Loni! I agree. I've only been stood up once but it taught me to never treat anyone like that throughout my dating life. I had a date this past Friday night that I WISH I had stood up! LOL! Whoa howdy, he has to be a serial killer! Very odd....

When my best friend got married I approved of the match but I didn’t/don’t like the guy. But he’s good for her and too her. I can be a woman and acknowledge that. And therefore I was at the wedding. People need to understand that approval doesn’t mean like. If they are good to the other and it’s a relationship that looks strong and has been tested my personal feeling should not matter.

This is why an old friend won't be invited to my wedding. They were over critical of everything, especially my fiancé and when I asked for more support they said "fine, if you want me to lie to you, I just won't say anything at all." I don't need that negativity in my life.

I didn’t approve my best friends first wedding and I wasn’t the only one and she asked us to object at her bachelorette party. But I wasn’t doing that. It was her choice to get married. When it came to the speak now or forever hold you peace there was a longgggg Pause. The whole wedding was cringe. I was there to be supportive

I've been to a wedding that I didn't approve of. However, the friend I supported on her happy day appreciated my attendance and that's why I went.

There is a whole spectrum between absolutely loving the couple and absolutely detesting it. The closer you get to the latter, the lesser chance of you needing to go. You can be not the biggest fan and still attend if you have enough reasons to. As Adrienne said, it's just about being so opposed that you can't even hold your peace. A third category is indifference. If you are so far from caring about them that neither good nor bad emotions evoke within you, then there is no need to go. However, it gets tricky when you are talking about indifference to someone in the family- at which point family respect is more important than your indifference.

Spoke to my best friend about my concerns of her marriage. There was abuse and she never had anything nice to say to say about him. He asked and got her a big ring so she said yes. I asked if she was sure and she asked me not to show up. It hurts to not be friends but I still think of her daily and hope he really did change but I’m also always here for her
