Brown Eyed Girls have pretty much always been ahead of their time. Their concepts are always grand and/or interesting with great vocals which is why they're one of my fav girl groups of all time. One of their members, Ga-In, has also had a huge solo career, with amazing concepts as well. If you're going to check out more Brown Eyed Girls I would recommend: 1.) Sixth Sense (was performed by lovelyz on Queendom) 2.) Abracadabra (this song was a huge hit back when it came out) 3.) Kill Bill I would also definitely check out Ga-In's solo work such as: 1.) Bloom (the music video was controversial (and iconic) but the song was still a big hit!) 2.) Paradise Lost 3.) Truth or Dare. (NOT the performance version. the regular music video is, in my opinion, one of the best pieces of media put out in kpop history. you really gotta watch it with the eng subs)
@ForestSen2 жыл бұрын
I recommend if you go with kill bill it’s better to watch the performance video first. Cause the MV really makes you lose focus on the song and dance. Fun to watch but I feel like most reactors get lost in watching the MV and lose focus on the song.

Glad to be solo carrying the linked T-ARA playlist. I said all I needed to in my message/rant that i get on when that topic comes up. Lovey Dovey slaps. Also glad you got to see BEG for the first time, I would argue at no point in any of their careers was anyone doing it like them amongst idol groups. People have said it, but yeah, Pink Tape bangs from front to back. Without a doubt one of the greatest kpop albums of all time, not many people would argue it anyways.

1. f(x) - “Shadow” (Pink Tape, 2013) f(x) specializes in balancing weirdness with mainstream appeal, and their beloved Pink Tape is constructed around that duality. It was hard to come to a consensus about the best deep cut, but “Shadow,” which peaked at No. 6 on Korea’s Gaon chart, is arguably the best embodiment of the girl group’s quirky sensibility. It’s a clever trick to take whimsical elements -- like the xylophones, vocal samples and lyrical love theme -- and twist them into something sinister. Those descending xylophones at the beginning paired with the warped vocal layers sound deeply unsettling -- then you read the lyrics, and the song becomes straight up chilling. The song strays away from explicit horror elements in favor of subtlety. On the surface, lyrics like “When the sun rises, together with you / I walk in sync” sound romantic. But on a closer read, the song is sung from the perspective of a stalker -- expressed through the extended metaphor of a shadow, a lyrical device borrowed from the album’s preceding song and lead single, “Rum Pum Pum Pum.” On top of its interpretive richness, “Shadow” is a downright catchy tune, proving that K-pop is a high art all its own. -- C.K. Billboards - The 40 best K-Pop Deep Cuts of the decade (2010s) so far : Critics' Picks www.billboard.com/articles/columns/k-town/8054669/kpop-deep-cuts-best Billboards also named f(x) - Pink Tape the #1 K-Pop album of the 2010s (decade)

Another f(x) Halloween song is Dracula. Like Shadow, there's no official video but on KZbin you can find their live stage performance from the Dimension 4 concerts at Docking Station (Japan). It's so good. I got the concert on dvd, & it's a fabulous way to see a lot of their songs live, the hits & the B sides which actually were usually pretty popular too despite SM not putting up the $ to make videos for most of them. On certain older songs rather than change the choreo, & also to honor Sulli, they had a dancer do her choreo with them even though her vocals are redistributed. Sadly Japan didn't include subs in any language on it though, so unless you understand Korean or Japanese you can't follow the talking with the audience (done 2 at a time while the other 2 change) between sections of the concert. Still I felt it was more than worth the $.

Brown Eyed Girls are the longest-running girl group with no member changes, they debuted in 2006 and they released "Abandoned" and "Wonder Woman" back in 2019 as the title tracks of their Re:vive album! The entire album is actually made of remakes of older songs. Definitely, Brown Eyed Girls have helped push the envelope in the K-pop scene ever since "Abracadabra" in 2009, which is just iconic, both from its sound, its concept (one of the first sexy girl group concepts, which was doable since most of the members were significantly older even for 2nd-gen standards), and its "arrogant dance" choreo. Although, they were originally formed with their vocals in mind, and so a lot of people like to draw comparisons between B.E.G. and Mamamoo, which is kind of neat, but they're both totally unique. Another great song to showcase their vocal and rap abilities is "Sixth Sense", a commentary on censorship. And you can see them pushing the envelope in "Wonder Woman" with them just defying gender norms, eh? Another great song to showcase their vocals is "Cleansing Cream"! Members: -JeA ("jay-ah") - leader, main vocalist, with the long bleached hair; she originally had to scout the other 3 members when forming the group! She's known for being loud on variety shows XD She's good at belting when singing (and the one you picked out in WW). -Narsha - lead vocalist, the one with the "pursed lips" in WW and the orange hair in "Abandoned"; she was scouted to the group as JeA recalled her being a good singer from high school. She's known for making adult jokes and making even mundane things kinda racy, though she's actually married now! She's also one of the 1st K-pop idols to have a prominent tattoo, that being the star tattoo on her wrist. She's good at falsetto when singing (and the one you picked out in "Abandoned"). -Miryo - rapper; she was once part of a rap group called the Honey Family from the late 90s or so, and her stage name then was Jo Honey. She currently runs an active KZbin channel, and has one of the most unique rap tones of female idols imo -Ga In ("ga-een") - lead vocalist and dancer, the one with the short hair (the first to sing in both songs) and maknae; she's known for helping to push the envelope of embracing sexual concepts with her solo works, and has almost always had short hair in every comeback. She was also good friends with Sulli and Goo Hara... She's good at keeping a stable voice when singing, though it's partly because she took some time off before this album for vocal training!

Yup, it's always been 5 members with f(x). There's Victoria, the leader and main dancer, who's Chinese. Then there's Amber, the main rapper, who's Taiwanese-American (and was scouted for her androgynous looks, as it was popular at the time). Luna, the main vocalist and 1st winner of King of Masked Singer, Sulli, former child actress, visual, vocalist, and rapper, and Krystal, main vocalist and Jessica's younger sister! f(x) always had such a unique and experimental sound, so it's too bad that SM didn't monopolize on that when they were together, especially when we see a lot more of that kind of interesting, electronic sound in their current groups :/ Some of their highlights are "Rum Pum Pum Pum", "Hot Summer", and "Red Light". Also, Luna recently made a comeback with her song "Madonna", if you haven't checked it out yet! :o

In their heyday, T-ara was one of the most popular 2nd-gen girl groups, standing alongside the likes of SNSD, Wonder Girls, 2NE1, miss A, and KARA. "Lovey-Dovey" was released pretty much at their peak popularity; their next comeback would be "Day by Day", which was when the scandal occurred. Indeed, the scandal was very messy and had many moving parts to it, but the basic gist is that rumours were spread that the members were bullying a member, when that member had in fact bullied another member, and was removed from the group accordingly. However, the CEO never let T-ara issue a formal apology or explanation, saying "he believed the girls did nothing wrong [to apologise]", and so the truth wasn't revealed for 5 years until 2017. One of the major charms of T-ara is that members Jiyeon and Eunjung were originally trained as actresses, so while they would miss various promotions due to acting jobs, this allowed T-ara to release notable drama MVs for their songs. "Roly-Poly" has a 12-minute MV with its own little story, while "Cry Cry" and "Lovey-Dovey" form a 2-part MV drama, and then another 2-parter between "Day by Day" and "Sexy Love". It's something incredibly unique to T-ara that is still yet to be seen again today! Well, don't let the similarity of concept between this and their other title tracks you've seen trick you - T-ara became known as "the chameleon of K-pop" due to their ability to take on almost any concept but still give it their T-ara flavour, which would be that catchy electronic hook! Some big hits include "Bo Peep Bo Peep", "Like the First Time", "I Go Crazy Because of You"/"You Drive Me Crazy", "So Crazy", and those songs listed above too! I'll list the members here just for the sake of trying to increase familiarity with them, but this is not an easy MV to tell them apart XD -Boram - 25:47 (with the red leopard print jacket), the oldest and shortest, her entire family is actually in the entertainment industry! Currently active in acting and musicals. -Qri ("Q-ree") - 25:35 (with the pink jacket), current leader, known as the "lucky charm" as T-ara's most popular songs have been the ones where she starts the song! Just released a solo song called "Suri Suri" that's got Halloween vibes! -Soyeon - 26:03 (in center with yellow pants), the main vocalist, she has a unique vocal tone and was originally part of SNSD's lineup until she and Taeyeon were asked to select a member they thought was least prepared to debut, and she chose herself. Currently active as a soloist. -Eunjung - 29:10 (with the short, permed black hair), main vocalist and rapper, her specialty is high notes (but she has none in this song...) Currently active as an actress. -Hyomin - 25:51 (with the earrings, dangling accessories, and red pants), lead vocalist and rapper, she's known for bringing the "sexy" charms to the group and is good friends with Sunny! Currently active as a soloist. -Jiyeon - 31:20 (the one with the long, curly hair) - vocalist, rapper, visual, face of the group, maknae. She's good friends with IU and has very unique eyes! Currently active as an actress and soloist. -Hwayoung - 29:35 (short hair, splits away from the other members), rapper. I'll admit she ended up being a pretty good rapper! But it's too bad that she's the one who bullied the later new member (along with her twin sister Hyoyoung), and then played the victim card even after 5 years, never once apologising... While Boram and Soyeon left the group in 2017, the remaining members got to keep their name and song rights when their company, MBK, tried to copyright it, but now things are smoothed out between the company and the members! In fact, there are currently rumours that the remaining 4 members (Qri, Eunjung, Hyomin, and Jiyeon) will be making a comeback next month! :o

The comment about treading the line between creepy and sweet struck me...because that became Red Velvet's bread and butter. Compare and contrast with RV's "Psycho".
@taykaygalaxy3 жыл бұрын
whew excuse the long comment but i figured since you’re inviting us to share in the outro, thought might as well :p okay so brown eyed girls are kind of legendary in their envelope pushing, especially gain who is an absolute queen and her solo work is probably my favourite in all of kpop, but anyways to circle back they’ve done a lot of taboo concepts flawlessly to the point where people just don’t ever complain about it. there is (or at least was) a lot of slut-shaming from both international and knetz about girl groups and sexy concepts back in second gen, know this firsthand since my ult is AOA lmao. but BEG’s biggest song, abracadabra (which you probably know from covers), had BDSM, foreplay, lesbian undertones AND murder in the MV and they just kinda got away with it and had the song become a huge hit anyways because they just have a power to how they execute these things that makes them seem untouchable. they also got away with a song called “warm hole” in 2015 that literally has “fire in the hole when you touch me down there” as a main line LOL. although abracadabra is their biggest song, a lot of their other title tracks are actually quite dark or at least thematically. and yes, the vocals ARE incredible. gain, who most consider the third best vocalist in the group, hits a whistle note in their title track “the sixth sense” with ease, it’s kinda crazy. AHHH SHADOW is SO good, and you made a great point about how the song, were it not for the interpretation that you talked about, would come off as very creepy. well, that’s because it is. the dual meaning to the whole shadow concept is that it’s also meant to be from the point of view of a sasaeng, which makes the unsettling feeling even more creepy. f(x) have maybe the best b-sides in kpop (obviously this is entirely subjective but it’s pretty consensus), stuff that’s on the level of creativity and quality as red velvet, their predecessors and the new b-side queens. i really hope someone puts in a request for red light at some point, i think it’s kind of a must hear as one of sm’s experimental “wtf” songs lol, however it’s probably the most cohesive out of all of those that exist (i got a boy, red light, zimzalabim, next level). the lyrics are also worth looking into, as it was sm’s first social commentary (and an angry one at that) on the shawol ferry disaster, which was then followed by the much softer tribute in one of these nights by red velvet. last but not least lovey dovey!!! t-ara were one of two girl groups that got me into kpop, bo peep being the first kpop song i ever heard and lovey dovey being the first kpop choreography i ever learned. :) honestly it’s not one of my favourite songs by them and i wouldn’t seek it out but it’s as you said, when it comes on every second gen fan has the “oh shit” time to dance reaction to it, myself included! hahha excuse the super long comment again, my apologies, great video as usual :)
@rhianna11083 жыл бұрын
@KpopPrince When you asked if anyone in the Lovey Dovey MV went on to become famous idols I DIED!! 😁 Almost all the female and male back dances you see in the back of the final shot were/became members of a short lived coed kpop group ironically called Coed School before being split into a separate girl group called F-ve Dolls and a boy group called SPEED. The twin sister of a T-ara member was a part of the girl group and the older brother of Zico was a part of the boy group.

You don't want to mess with the members of Brown Eyed Girls. In another MV, they straight up murder a dude who crossed them. One of the members, Ga-in, has an amazing solo career. She has a charming song about rape titled "Fuck You" that has to be experienced to believe. It's really good. I'm not selling it well. BEG is a 2nd gen Kpop girl group that defies categorization. They are provocative, but for most 2nd gen Kpop girl groups that just means sexy. They are definitely sexy, but they provoke your sensibilities in a lot of other ways, also. They are occasionally disturbing. It's too easy to put them in the "gurrl powr" pigeonhole, but they have so much more depth than that. You mentioned the mix, and that's one example. BEG is just a step above, and a step ahead.
