As a boy growing up my father bought me a dog which he got me as a pup who ended up becoming fiercely loyal to me. We lived on a 7 acre lifestyle block with a creek surrounded by fields and orchards, mostly apples and peaches but also the most delicious apricots. This was our playground which we roamed as 11 year olds with slug guns and dogs in tow. My dog was Mack and the memory of him still lingers on with me today. He was a fond friend. He knew that I was from a superior race of beings that built homes and cars and refrigerators with sausages that he’d woof down in 3 seconds flat. And because he knew we were rocket scientists compared to him with a life that was beyond his comprehension, he wisely elected to become the loyal friend he was to me. Now I am Mack and God is God. I cannot understand how He made the world. It’s beyond my comprehension. The stars and the distant galaxies are a mystery to me. But God did it. He made it. And I am fiercely loyal to Him.

Sorry, I just had to point out. In science, theories explain natural phenomena. In order for a concept to become theory it has to go through rigorous scientific challenges and must hold its ground beyond any reasonable doubt. So, theory of evolution is the best possible explanation of the progress of life on earth. You're right that it isn't a law but that doesn't mean it has no proof.

I just purchased a new Bible in large print so that I can reread the Gospels. There was one time many many years ago my mother was helping me back to move and there was a giant mound of Bibles. I've seen this many times when the way someone sees a category of information, such as science vs. history or what ever, is so incompatible to someone else that you'll see a few things happen... They'll keep trying to define the other person into a box and the other person keeps denying that definition applies, each person will reach their wits end as they think they've explained their side sufficiently multiple times, and eventually someone will be the first to give up and that's the best thing that can happen. In this case, it broke the cycle and gave a new productive path where Cliffe's friend asked the guy that if Christianity was true then would he become a Christian. The guy said he assumed he'd have to be, but the other guy said many people would still say no because there's emotion behind it instead of intellect. That point feeds into all the times I've seen other students continuously twist morality and religion to get permission to do whatever they want. Their emotion is driving how they want the world to work. Cliffe keeps explaining intellectually how religion actually works and why it's worth following it as a guide while the other person just simply won't allow it and keeps twisting things to suit their emotions for what they want. I know someone who's very arrogant and insists on wanting the world to suit him, but it never does and he keeps getting screwed in life. I can't even get as far as entering a debate with him. I'm confident he'll be in hell, cursing God the whole time and I feel powerless to get him to change his mind about anything. And I hope one of these kids talking to Cliffe will eventually resemble the guy I know in terms of how he argues.

@@landofthefree2023 I agree here. I'm not sure I've heard him ever explain why he is an old Earth Creationist. I would like to hear why he believes this. Two reasons I am young earth is: 1. Bible is trustworthy as the inerrant Word and God's creation is explained clearly in Genesis. 2. If you extrapolate on Earth's population growth rate and the rate that technology has advanced throughout history, it would be a stretch to come to the conclusion that humans have been on earth for millions of years.

@@landofthefree2023 when I first became saved, I wanted to stick with what science says, but after a few dreams, after a few readings of Genesis, after a few convictions from the Holy Spirit to trust God at His word, I can only conclude that Gsod is right and science (mankind) is wrong. The earth is indeed young, about 6000-7000 years, and this lines up with Scripture and common sense based on simple observation. That God did not use evolution to make anything, even if it is possible for Him to have done, He didn't do it.

A scientific theory explains why something happens, a scientific law is an observation of that happening occurring. Firstly, a theory is not absolute, and it's not meant to be. As human knowledge and understanding advances, theories can and have been adjusted accordingly (the relationship of Newton's gravity and Einstein's relativity comes to mind). That's the whole point and beauty of science. For example, there's no way any human could know that the scientific theory of evolution absolutely happens every time, anywhere in the universe. The Fossil record specifically the Cambrian Explosion shows there are little to no connection between prior life forms and the new Fossils that were found it shows that animal appear then stay or die out. It's the moving goal post that makes asking for extraordinary evidence a turn off to intellectual conversations. Because people like you will only fully believe something until the whole secrets of the universe is shown to you, yet you trust that your friends really like you and you do not explore their brains scientifically for proof. You guys move the goal post so you'll feel like you are winning at an argument while in reality it's the last resort of someone losing and can't back it up, so they just keep backing up. But when asked if they can live out their extreme skepticism in simple forms, they can't. Because extreme skepticism is only used as emergency escape buttons when cornered.

Even the verse you have pointed and if you continue up to verse 5 says "3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began" Notice Jesus says , "with the glory i had with you before the world begun". Jesus obviously claimed to be God . He in fact was put to death for it. But He defeated death so yes He cannot die, he actually did not because He is still alive. Telling people that if they don't listen then they are subject to eternal damnation where they will be tortured and suffer for eternity is the reason that people don't listen to religion. The answer is more along the lines of earn heaven, otherwise lose heaven. I think it is that simple. The issue is that he kept saying that evolution started out as a theory until it became "scientific fact" based on the overwhelming evidence... Evolution never became fact. It is still just a theory, a heavily promoted theory with substantial claims that can be construed as "evidence" but it is not and CANNOT be legally considered factual. God DID create things better. When man/woman chose to distance themself from God and choose their own way, things went south pretty quickly from there. This is why everything may seem like chaos, but there is already a plan. We are given a broken sinful world but God in his wisdom allows a way to rise above our bodily desires in his son, the living embodiment of God. Those who have faith in the son and believe will enter the kingdom not when they die, but in their lives today through spiritual peace and loving relationships.

If I told you that a tornado that plows through a junkyard could assemble a fully functioning 747, a piece of machinery that contains ~6 million parts, you would tell me that it's impossible (or at the very least statistically improbable, which in reality means impossible), regardless of how much time is given. And lets not forget he law of entropy, that when moving forward in time in a closed system (and we would have to say that the universe is a closed system because...what is outside of it?), order becomes less ordered. This is an observable principle. The house that I was born in, if nobody ever lived in it after I moved away and nobody ever kept it up (i.e. putting in energy into it from outside the system), it would fall apart and turn into dust. Now consider that even a single human cell contains around 100 trillion atoms, that all need to be arranged in specific geometries for it to survive and function properly, with interconnected systems that all rely on all the other systems in order for it to survive...So you would not be willing to believe that an airplane could be assembled in a tornado, even if it had a quintillion years to do so...and yet with something many orders of magnitude more complex, you would be willing to believe happened spontaneously and without need for intelligence? If you spoke to any programmer about what would happen to a fully functioning piece of code he had written if he randomly changed a single 1 or 0 in it, he would tell you that it wouldn't function anymore as designed. Now imagine you keep doing that over and over again (representing transcription errors in a dna strand), what is the likeliness that piece of code would suddenly work better than the original? Or even work at all for that matter? There have been studies on this idea. For an average size protein of ~300 amino acids, for ever 1 functioning combination of those amino acids, there are 10^77 combinations that are either non-functional or quite frankly harmful. So again, statistically improbable (i.e. impossible).

This masked looked just like a real guy who was later arrested for the robbery leaving the real robber to go free. The video footage showed the robbers "face" to which the mother of the innocent man who the mask looked like even said thats her son on the video but it really wasnt. If it wasnt for the real robbers girlfriend calling the cops to say they got the wrong guy an innocent man would have been charged all because of the evidence so even evidence itself takes faith. I would have to point out to Cliffe that atheists aren't running away from God as he claims, we simply don't find the evidence convincing enough to believe he exists. Maybe in Cliffes own mind he truly believes we're running away, he's free to believe that of course, but I'm sure if he asked them he'd get a whole host of reasons why they don't believe in God. If like me, you were born and raised into a Christian home, you don't get a say in what you believe, it's told to you as truth, it's only much later on you have the mental capacity to question if what you've been told is true and you are able to take a step back and look at the bigger picture you find better answers. Or maybe you are convinced with what you've been told. It's up to all of us individually to find out what is true and what isn't. These are great conversations.

Putting Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins etc to one side for a moment, when it comes to those students he talks to on campus, Cliffe is much, MUCH older than they are, so of course he will present his case in a more mature manner than they will be able to at the moment. I'm in my late 50s, which is also way older than them and Cliffe is considerably older than me, so there's a huge gulf between them, years. Those ones that Cliffe speaks to on the campus are very young and still finding their way. They will very likely change as they get older. I know I did. I'm not the same person I was when I was 17, 18, 19 etc. Ask a young 20 year old man a question, he will give you some kind of an answer, correct? And then, if you could ask that SAME man the SAME question again in 60 years time when he is 80 years old, will he give you the SAME answer? Highly unlikely. Experience changes us all. I don't know how old you are but I'm guessing you're around my age, give or take a few years and I bet you changed as you got older too, right? Ever wonder what Cliffe was like when he was their age? From what he has said about his journey to becoming a Christian, he wasn't any better than them. He was just like them and that is probably why he does what he does. Maybe he sees a lot of himself as he once was in them and that is why he is patient with them, because otherwise it would be hypocrisy, agreed? The bottom line is that there is too much of this 'them and us' tribalism going on here. The reality is.........the reality is that there is NO them and us. We're ALL the same human beings trying to find the best understanding of things around us we can. I'm no different to you are, the only probable difference between us is that we have come to different conclusions about certain elements of the reality around us, due to our different experiences or perceptions of things at the moment, that's all it is at the end of the day.

If Cliffe is asking that gaps in the fossil record be filled he is demonstrating that he has utterly zero understanding of what the fossil record shows. If an intermediary between species A and species Z is found then all you have is two more gaps: another gap between A and the intermediary and one between the intermediary and Z. Cliffe asks for evidence he doesn't understand and will never accept. His proposition that breeding a horse to become a pig is something that would prove intelligent design not evolution. He then goes on to quote Darwin. I mean to then quote Darwin whose work showed how speciation takes place is staggering. Dawkins DOES NOT say that evolution explains the first replicating organism. Yes it is "JUST" a theory but is is a working one in terms of what we can observe and test. Where it all apart is when it starts to conjecture about the thing unseen, that cross-species evolution can happen, which has never been observed and never will be. The second part is that every animal could not have come from one. DNA is programming and the program isn't written to offshoot species. We can see small changes Within species but dogs will always be dogs no matter how many thousand of years they are bred or adapt to their environment. Ther is also the problem of creating new parts such as lungs, eyes, ears, working nervous system, brains, etc with simple random chance guiding or at least overseeing the process. That is some amazing programming for their being no programmer. It would take not just billions of years for these small adaptations to create entire new species, but zillions and zillions of years based in what we have observed since recorded history. That would push the estimated dates back by a factor of millions.

DNA is NOT _"programming"_ A computer program precisely defines a process, a set of steps to execute. The process encoded by a computer program is typically called an algorithm. An algorithm is seldom a straightforward list of steps. In addition to being extraordinarily detailed, it is also full of loops and conditional branches. A loop is when the algorithm repeats a certain set of steps over and over. A conditional branch is when the algorithm tests a certain condition, and then - based on the results of that test - either continues forward or jumps to a different point in the process. There are countless biochemical processes going on within the human body at all times, each contributing to the development and maintenance of that body. These processes certainly involve a lot of looping and branching, and therefore they could validly be compared to the algorithms encoded in a complex computer program. The problem with this analogy is that *these processes are not actually encoded in our DNA* The language of DNA does not contain codes to indicate the start or the end of a loop, nor when a branch should occur, nor what test to perform when a branch point is reached, nor where in the instructions to jump based on the results of that test. Worse yet for our computer program analogy, there are no DNA codes for any of the individual steps in any of these thousands of biochemical processes. DNA is not capable of representing or communicating the steps in any of these processes. DNA is, for the most part, just a set of lists that specify sequences of amino acids. Therefore DNA is not like a computer program at all. 😜

They frequently introduce the argument with a question of the type, "What use is half an eye?". However if the question is recast as "Given a choice, would you prefer to be completely blind or have 50% of your present vision?", then it becomes clear that the question is badly formed, especially when keeping in mind that many species manage to survive with significantly less-advanced eyes. Examples include the polychaete worms, which can distinguish between light and dark; the simple eye-cup of the flatworms, for finding the direction of a light source; jellyfish and scallops, with simple eyes for detecting movement;the famous compound eyes of the insects, which can make out simple shapes, and ultimately the sophisticated single-lens eyes of the molluscs and vertebrates. (1) Light-sensitive proteins could evolve through a random mutation and re-use pre-existing cascade structures to signal other proteins and activate the cell. Natural selection would prefer organisms which do something useful with this mutation, such as improving the feeding pattern (i.e., during the day food may be more abundant, so conserving energy during the night would be advantageous). (2) If one cell is evolutionary advantageous, then several cells may be more advantageous due to redundancy and due to the higher probability of successfully perceiving light. (3) A flat patch of cells can be slightly improved by the curving of some of the outer cells creating a small depressed area, which allows some amount of sense of where the light is coming from. (4) Said depression can depress further until there is only a small slit of light coming in. This allows a more complex "picture" to be seen, rather than the more binary "light yes/no" of the flat patch and the "light on this side yes/no" of the depressed patch. (5) Said depression may be covered by a membrane that would magnify the light coming in, which has obvious benefits. (6) Muscles to move the "half eye" around would allow greater field of vision and more accurate determination of the source of the light. (7) Detecting basic colors is more useful than detecting no colors (e.g., "is that the toxic blue flower or the edible yellow flower?"). (8) The ability to control the size of the slit (even a little bit) and its magnifier is useful to refocus and get just a little better vision at certain distances. And with that, the hypothetical eye would be reasonably similar to the eye possessed by most mammals today.

It is not very wise at all to try to dismiss something just because you don’t like that idea especially in the case of God. There is a judgment day, there is a real heaven and a hell. That is not a small question, we are talking about your eternity and the possibility that you might waste your whole eternity in order for you to be able to live your life the way you want only for a small fraction of time. You must seriously consider the idea of heaven and hell and really analyze it to make you are not making a mistake and not end up in hell.
