I'm a big fan of your work, and this might be my favorite video that you've done. As a practicing behavior analyst and future psychologist, I'm astounded at how well-versed you are with the literature and important principles of behavior/psychology. In my work, I label this as "positive scanning" versus "negative scanning." It's quite remarkable how practicing one approach (positive; looking to positively praise/reinforce "the good") over the other (negative; looking to critique/reprimand "the bad") impacts our overall attitude, happiness, and likability. Despite knowing this ... I even sometimes forget this and experience "drift!" I may have to favorite this one and watch it regularly. Thank you!

This is a genuinely insightful video that is far deeper than it seems at first glance. The idea of giving compliments as a way to look for gratitude in your own life is so simple yet massively reframes the whole practice in a way that I think few people would have considered before. Definitely would appreciate more videos on this topic, especially with more specific examples and perhaps a deeper dive into the importance of gratitude.

1) Investor Guy Spier describes how writing Thank You notes made him more successful professionally. You are underscoring the same dynamic Damien 2) Didn't know pf the burgeoning photography enthusiast in you. It is a great way to fall in love with life and capture experiences....

If you complimented more people in the right way from the right mindset, your self-esteem would skyrocket in weeks and the trajectory of your life would go up phenomenally. Why do you give compliments? Often people take photos on holiday to show other people later - they then lose the moment. But some people who take photos on holiday are actually taking more in because they're thinking about the beauty of the scene more intensely. The action is the same but the motivation is different. Similarly, giving a compliment can be self-serving (to get them to like you) or out of habit (i.e. when you see someone). But the best reason to give compliments is for yourself - for you to look around and observe things about people around you that are worth appreciating. Try to look for things to appreciate. This is similar to gratitude and saying your thanks for what you do already have in your life. This is why prayer based on gratitude is shown to be beneficial to happiness. You're focusing on the good in the world rather than the bad. And people will want you around more because people want others who appreciate them and see the good in them. Be sensitive to what is good about what others are doing.

Complimenting things you value and appreciate in others is justice. Value for value. Withholding it is injustice. Now, one should make sure he values the right things... Valuing/admiring someone's ability to drink 2 liters of vodka and stay conscious and on his feet is probably something to examine. That's what the science of ethics is about.

I think that this is definitely the right mindset to have. At the same time, a nontrivial proportion of the audience is likely to misinterpret it, instead misusing compliments as a tool to continue idealizing others. Perhaps this video should've explicitly stated to find everyday people to compliment for wholesome reasons, rather than fall to animalistic instincts and compliment young, attractive women.

Love it. It’s such a karma thing. You get what you put out. And it’s a free thing to do. It just cost you some self awareness and discipline.

Great video Damien, as always. But I was trying to check out the school of online dating on your website for the past few days now, but kept getting redirected (links to the other courses work fine). Did you discontinue that course? Or is the site undergoing maintenance? Would love to look into it, as my dating life in 2021 so far has been pretty uneventful :/

LOLOLOLOL Damien that's a pretty arrogant statement to make; everybody else taking pictures except me = a meathead. Yeah people using compliments to get some; a Chad complimenting a chick to get in her bed ... and her falling blindlessly for it and thinking that the dude is into her ... Compliment isn't some secret sauce anymore. Hey Damien it would be great if you could give us examples of that. Like you gave us a bad example(Karen's hair). But what we would need are things to do. Otherwise there will be dudes trying to compliment chicks about their shoes or something lol.

I am going to give you a really good example of a meaningful compliment. There was a woman at my job before the lockdown that I bumped into that was wearing a green top. I told her something to the effect that I like your green top. She told me thank you and I said green is the most abundant color in nature it's a shame that women don't wear it more. She was floored in a good way.
