We all know I don't exactly love thrift flipping garments, but after my recent closet clear out, there was a small selection of items left that simply needed small tweaks before they could spark enough joy again to stay. So today I have the results of my experiments with overdyeing, fixing some sleeves, and sewing with my (least)favorite fabric to show you all how I transformed a few pieces to work better for me and my closet.

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

does the dye come off significantly in the wash or is it just like normal washing? I suppose if it were that big of a deal i would just hand wash it separately but i have never dyed any garment so i thought id inquire
@YarnAndy
@YarnAndy 3 жыл бұрын
@@whiskerbiscuit6209 it depends on the dye, the base and the process. If you don't keep the item under heat for long enough, the dye might run. Ideally you should keep the item under heat between 20-40 minutes to make sure it sets. If we're talking about acid dyes, that is, like the one in this video, with the wool. Other dyes have other requirements. But dark colors will always run, unless on a synthetic base (which you can't realistically dye at home anyway).

Walking foot - yes. Baste - yes. Also, greatly reduce the pressure on your presser foot and use a lot of pins on an angle instead of straight across the sewing line. Hold the fabric taut at the front and back of the machine as it feeds under the foot. Some have success with sulky temporary spray adhesive, but be careful of overspray. I've tried using tissue paper sandwiched in between layers and in between the velvet and the machine - a trick I learned when sewing vinyl; the paper becomes perforated by the stitches and tears away after sewing . Change needles often, and doubly often if the velvet is real silk, and keep a vacuum handy close by, ready to pull out some of the loose pile lint from the machine as you sew, as that stuff gums up the works very, very quickly.

10 out of 10 for all your redo garments. I am a fiber dyer and I am here to tell you that black is a difficult color to achieve. Often it is blotchy, or brownish, or breaks, or greyish...you did good! 😉 I was cringing at the Rit as you described what you had in mind, because it often dulls the item. I think that dulling effect is exactly what that dress needed. Angling that sleeve lifted your bust and narrowed your waist. I think we forget about how little tweaks can make such a huge difference. 🌈🌈🦋🦋

velvet - yes to basting and walking foot - and also know how to lower the pressure on your pressure foot. It helps. All of the projects came out well - and even if I liked the red sweater - you'll wear it more now, and isn't that the point of having clothes? it's easy to get a low shank walking foot and other things for your cute little 99k.

I learned a lot from this. Your description of why the first dress didn't work and why the remake of it does work was enlightening, and I will be making use of this info. Sometimes it is hard to analyze why something you bought and liked does not work on your body the way you wanted it to, and your explanation makes perfect sense. Also changing the color is a good fix for those pieces that you really like, or spent a bunch of money on, and would like to keep. If the cost of a box of dye can make it work, that's wonderful. We all want that perfect wardrobe made of pieces that we love, and these ideas go a long way to helping you get that.

Ok, you have unlocked such a persistent problem for me! I have never quite been able to figure out why a mid-upper arm sleeve feels weirdly unflattering...it's because that's also the widest part of my bust! Everything came out so beautiful! My favorite was the black knit sweater. The red was pretty, but as someone that has 96% all black clothes, I think the sweater looks gorgeous in black.

I liked the brighter skirt better, but on you that deeper peacock teal really works, so that was a good choice! The double redone black dress would fit in well with your Bladerunner pieces.

My tip for sewing with velvet is usually: don’t! But I’m also about to embark on a velvet project, and my plan is to baste, and to hand sew everything. Less chance of things getting all wiggly.
@RivkahSong
@RivkahSong 3 жыл бұрын
Victorian sewing manuals recommend to baste it twice, actually. The first time with really long basting stitches (to keep it kinda still for the real basting) and then a second time with much smaller basting stitches before you sew for real. Even then the only way to really stop it from slipping occasionally is to hand sew the whole thing so you're probably on the right track. Good luck!

I’m amazed at the difference the sleeve alteration made on the 80s does 40s dress. I, too, find cap and short sleeves tricky on the busty figure, but I liked how you explained the silhouette shape difference for your figure. And the dye job results are remarkable, especially turning bright red to solid black. They all make me want to try out dying alterations.

I love how the overdyed paisley dress turned out. The original dress looked like it was wearing you. I'm personally not a huge paisley fan, but the muted, subtle pattern of the dyed fabric presents a compelling argument in favor. :)

These all look amazing Bianca! I especially love that teal skirt! The new color is gorgeous! As for the sweater it does make sense that it turned black. The original sweater was a bright red that looks like it contains yellow in order to brighten the color and not have blood red. Your dye is aubergine so would have contained both blue and red. Color theory states that when you add the three primaries together, you get black. Since the original sweater contained some yellow dye it turned the purple black. You'd have needed to bleach it before coloring it to get purple. As an artist I've had to deal with yellow tinted reds mixed with blue turning black instead of purple a lot lol. The sweater does look gorgeous in black, however, so that's a happy accident!

Thank you Rivkah! Yeah I am new to dyeing so I figured purpled over red would just give me a more burgundy-ish purple, but it's too much chemistry going in for me to comprehend really 😅

Yes, sewing with velvet needs to be basted. Sometimes it needs to be underlined if areas are cut on the bias. You did a great job. One has to have patience when sewing-it is not an easy profession! We put our seam rippers to good use!
