Which Dresses Can I Keep? // Massive Closet Clear Out Part 2

Time for part two of my closet clear out, and this time I have to deal with decluttering my thrifted blouse collection and sorting through the large volume of retro dresses I have sewn over the last several years. It is certainly harder for me to let go of things I have made myself, and since everything still sparks some joy, the question becomes which things spark the /most/ joy, eek!
Hopefully by the time I get to listing everything on Etsy (think summer-ish, it's going to be a while!!) and doing a final sort I will be able to let a few more items go, but by then we all know I will have made new things as well of course!

The spider web heels from Macy's : mcys.co/36bXeAS
The metallic BAIT heels (are on sale!!!) : baitfootwear.com/collections/...
Also, not sponsored by either of these shoe sources, just to confirm.
I won't be selling the Ankara wax print cotton dress seen in the video, as I don't want to profit off it in any way, and really I'd like to send it directly to a more appropriate owner, so I'm going to try and figure that one out. I have learned and grown over the last 10 years of wearing and collecting vintage and sewing retro garments, and I always hope to continue learning about how I can do better as member of the vintage community.

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Wow, I didn't know there was a name for this!! I ALWAYS have to have either the tv on or a video from youtube talking about stuff relating to the things I'm doing when I'm doing things, otherwise it's super hard for me to get anything done. I get my university homework done much easier if I have a friend sitting with me (in Discord during these times). I googled this and my mind was blown, it's always weird to find out things you've been doing are an actual coping mechanism.

Yaaaay!! I'm not alone in this haha. I do have times when I get the "productive itch" and I try to take advantage of it while I can but I definitely feel more motivated to do something if someone else is also working on a task or project at the same time. Whether it's a friend or family member in the same room as me or if I'm watching a video of someone working on a sewing project.

Alas, while I could perhaps get dressed everyday, I am currently having some trouble with my eyes which means I cannot wear make-up everyday 😭 My eyes had such a break from make-up in general during lockdown, that now whenever I do wear mascara (and I'm trying all kinds of new ones now due to this sudden issue) it really irritates my eyes and they hurt for the next 24 hours almost, making getting editing or sewing done a bit harder! So no daily dressing up for me until I find a mascara I can wear daily again too! Super irritating 😅

@@TheClosetHistorian It is so incredibly frustrating and uncomfortable when your eyes/skin and makeup are not getting along. I absolutely understand and I’m sorry you’re going through that. I have sensitive eyes and skin, but I need to wear makeup for work and my work can be a harsh environment so the struggle is real. I’ve been thinking about trying those magnetic lashes and skipping mascara all together.

Few things have been as life-changing as a polyester purge! I'm so much more cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. My mom gave me a bunch of her old clothes to sell recently, and I had to wash & wear them each a couple of times to get the old house musty smell out of them, and the polyester ones drove me bonkers, they're so itchy! How did I never notice how itchy polyester is?

27:12 comes in for my first save. The 80s does 40s where you werent sure of the sleeves? I think it is flattering but that is just my opinion. 29:00 is the second. The collared 80s does 50s? It has pockets, I feel like it could be layered and styled in some fun ways but is nice on its own, its flattering, and is a nice pattern. I know you said its too I love Lucy and not your style, but I feel like it could be useful some day for a photoshoot, last minute costume, a look book, or some such? Selling things that aren't finished seems fine to me so long as the description reflects that. Especially the fan favorites, cause you can bet several someones would be sad at not getting the chance give it a good home now that they know you're letting them go. I also couldn't help cracking up at lines and wanting to type them out here in the comments. "I had to suffer through doing a zipper" "so colorful and fun and yet Im going to keep it anyway" "I spent all those random tens dollars, instead of on a vodka soda, on a broach" and "yes I am a maximumist and I like having stuff" Came out as my top pick. The last two I related to greatly. I think we in the modern age have a prejudice against collecting things that aren't "useful" or a person collecting a large number of one thing even if it is useful because "surely its too much to use them all so its wasteful and a bit obsessive and obsessive is bad". I always get a bit itchy when people get down on themselves or others for having stuff. I dont think its a bad thing in itself. Problems come when there is an unhealthy attachment, your spending to much, you hurt others in some way, or you cant maintain a healthy living space for how much you have. In your case and that of creators in general I feel extra leniency is due with having things since the stuff you have related to your passions AND to what do with your life. You make things and content connected to fashion and vintage. It makes sense for you to have access to pieces to use and as inspirations, reference, and what not. Also the more time passes the harder it will be to find things in decent condition. Vintage will become antique and so on. What you have wears out, becomes, damaged or lost, and it can be nice to have a similar as a replacement. I know several older ladies who kick themselves for getting rid of things because now "you just cant get the same quality anymore, if you can find it at all"

If you think something is not good quality in it's workmanship, but it's pretty, perhaps the middle path would be to list it at a very low price titled "novice-made" with a very transparent description of what's kinda funky about it? I sold some pieces a few years ago that were designer, but I was really worried about getting the condition-to-price ratio right; so I listed them very under-priced and explained why they were discounted. It all sold and I got very positive feedback because people seemed really excited to have such a clear idea of what they were buying and what to expect.

"You're an Autumn dear. not a Spring". Or it's just that the brighter colors wash you out compared to the warmer colors which give your skin a bit of color without turning your porcelain skin pink. Great job decluttering your closet. Now you won't be able to decide what to wear because there's so many great choices that all look great on you!

As a fellow big busted lady, a sleeve length like that just doesn't work for me. I feel like it just goes in line perfectly with the widest part of my chest (in a bad way), making it look wider than it is. Also, good job on the dresses! Getting rid of stuff you made is hard! I just try to remind myself that they're going to people who will have more use for it.

I agree with your assessment of the sleeves on the orange floral dress. They do hit in an awkward way. The dress is nice enough to bother altering though. I think you could shorten the sleeves to a more attractive length.

You should certainly list the items that may not be as well finished as you would prefer in your shop. I thoroughly enjoyed these videos. It was enjoyable to see someone else grapple with how to curate their wardrobe and get rid of those items that they don’t reach for. Glad I’m not the only who keeps stuff for sentimental reasons.

💜 Your wardrobe is so fun! That rainbow dress is so pretty. I think it's fine to sell it with unfinished seams as long as you disclose it, but if you feel off about that, you could consider doing a giveaway for it. Like you said it's a favorite. My inner magpie tendencies are in full sympathy. I tried to go minimalist and succeeded in decluttering a lot, but I just don't think I'll ever be able to live my tiny house dreams lol. Too many craft items which also need space to use. And my wardrobe tends to re-expand.

Also, I think it’s better if you sell those slightly unfinished dresses. You can mark them down in price a bit and note that it still needs seam finishing. That way, anyone who wants to take that on and has the ability can. If you donate it, it’s just a general donation, and honestly, they might just bin an unfinished dress. Definitely better for you to sell it yourself, that way someone can buy it while knowing exactly what they’re getting.

You've done a great culling job. Thanks for showing off your costume jewelry, closet, etc. It looks amazing! Years ago a friend of mine inherited a fair amount of costume jewelry from her grandmother and she came up with what I thought was an awesome idea. She bought a nice, but plain floor rug that she hung and then she pinned her various brooches and I think draped some necklaces over other pins too on the hanging rug. So, the costume jewelry was within sight and reach and she had unusual, interesting, and very decorative wall art. So, if you have wall space and can find a rug you want to hang....
