Wonderful to watch. I am 70 years old now but started my training at 16. I still practice kata if I'm not incapable of doing the actual i at least run through them in my mind. Seeing such amazing technique brings back the way it used to be. Well done sir. Well done.

Wonderful katas. I’m 70 as well, and have trained Japanese Goju Ryu for 29 years, but am learning the Okinowan Goju forms now as well. Don’t train as hard as I used to, but love it none the less. 🇨🇦

To be honest i envy you because of so many years practicing karate. I am 53 and regret that I was not continuing my kung-fu practice after 26 year old. Now I have hip implant and because of yhat not being able to do martial arts. Keep going sir!

As a follow old man I now only do sanchin(without the stroke inducing tensing up and breathing) and my go to favorite is Tensho as the movements are simple, flowing and meditative like. And as senior citizen the tensho blocking techniques is what I would use for self defense as my striking will not keep up with a young thug but circular blocking his strikes and deflecting punches with my palms I can do. I have abandoned the other kata as I can't do them anymore other than run through in my head.

I'm 79 and try to train 4 days a week. I'm still cleaning up my Goju, Shotokan and kobudo forms. We didn't have you tube in my youth or the opportunity to learn from different instructors from all over this planet. Higaano, Gogen Yamaguchi, and all of the masters of Goju continue to motivate and inspire me. Although there have been differences in kata forms I enjoy Higaano Sensei and encourage my students to go back to the origins. OSU thank you. I think your katas are excellent and wish I had the opportunity to train with you.

Worse than politics are discussions as to which organization within a style is teaching kata correctly. More interesting, is the interpretation of the same kata by different styles. That horse left the barn ages ago as the proteges of those we recognize as Soke went out into the world to explore their own roads. When one considers the inventiveness and creativity of a Dan Djurdjevic, for example, what he brings to his art, and based upon his written philosophies, we have witnessed the evolution of a new style within which many classics are taught. Knowledge, enlightenment and self-improvement are what is to be sought. What works best, and why, should be the subject of discussion. Enfield Sensei contributes to that discussion, much to the advantage of all.

@@gregs_garage The Jundokan in Okinawa was founded by Miyazato Eiichi Sensei following the death of (Goju ryu founder) Miyagi Chojun Sensei. Many instructors came up through the Jundokan, and some of them later left to start their own organizations. For example: IOGKF, Jundokan International, GKCglobal (which is us), and others. Despite not being directly affiliated with the Jundokan dojo today they follow Miyazato Sensei's teaching and are therefore Jundokan lineage. Hope that makes sense.

taekwondo that does goju' Ryu kata? Hmm interesting. You use taekwondo as the system you practice yet use Japanese terms like sensei instead of sabonim and kata instead of thing or poomsae..... Sounds like a MC dojo/mcdojang to me no offense....random Asian terms from completely different language all rolled into one. Calling it's taekwondo but using only Japanese terms, Then adding and using incorrect Japanese in random order like Goshi(hip/waist action) and Japanese shun a term only used for a type of seasoning in Japanese unless it's from Chinese....making it three random Chinese words for a style..... Did a quick google search a only goshi shun karate shows up aka a well known mcdojo style that has been exposed long ago as a black belt mill for cash for belts and a made up system by a westerner for money making. Dont know why people feel the need to make up a new name or style just cuz they added some katas or techniques but that's just me Sounds weird having a wholely Korean term tae(foot)Kwon(fist) and Do the. A Japanese term goshi(waist/hips....) and shun(a type of seasoning lol or I guess shun a old outdated sino-Japanese(Japanese term of Chinese origin)word for swift?) lmao Literally never heard of no taekwondo goshi shun but there is tons of Info on goshi shun karate a made up system by an American. Not to poke fun but goshi shun isn't even proper use of Japanese.....using it in that order means hip/waist seasoning/taste in modern Japanese.

@@teovu5557 yeah my style is Goshi Shun Goju Ryu. So its a mix between Taekwondo, Karate, Boxing and a few other things. The main techniques and stances are Taekwondo and Karate though. My sensei also has a deep love for other martial arts so he taught us things from other styles as well in the Black Belt classes. We've also had some sister schools come in and teach us things from Tai Chi. Many styles do so some of the same exact movements and attacks, its surprising how many of them aren't just under one name or one style.

Not surprising as shotokan uses kata with shuri te and tomari the origins while Goju Ryu uses Naha te forms/kata. Very different feel and techniques. One Goju kata might be similar to you is Goju Ryu kata Seisan(13)and shotokan's hangetsu(half moon)for formerly called seishan(13)

This type of Karate style; does not believe in high kicks! My Sensi told me if you want to kick some one in the head make his head come down to your feet. This style of Karate is all about balance and a good amount of floor fighting, With emphasises on power - power does come from the ground so you should have you feet on the ground to tap into it! The style was meant for power to break threw Samurai armor (at least armor of the time) . High kicks are nice to look at but leave more vunabilites if excuitted well can be very devastating blows but may not be safe or practical to use at certain situations besides legal issues with every one carrying video cameras these days . A lot harder trying to convince a jury you killed some one with a Taekwondo spinning kick to the head that it was self defense. While more conservative moves are easier to articulate to police, public, juries

The kata are performed in the order taught for this particular branch of goju ryu karate. The ratio of kicks to hand techniques is a reflection of self-defense encounters as opposed to a competitive arena.

Brad Gray Brad, what I notice most about watching these kata is a slight pelvic tilt (in the wrong direction). That said I (hopefully) know a lot more about what the kata is supposed to be doing nowadays. Therefore when I watch my kata (on anyone's for that matter) I am looking at the transitions and their implications rather than a specific way of "doing" things. I think it's also interesting to note that at the old Jundokan dojo, before any of the splits that took place, senior teachers expressed and therefore taught the kata uniquely. For myself now following Taira Masaji Sensei I practice kata with much more emphasis on moving from the center using koshi.

GKCgoju Sure thing no doubt. I have trained with Higaonna Sensei and hope to again his health permitting. I've also had the good fortune to have trained with several of the IOGKF senior instructors over the last few years and watching your video makes me smile because your execution of the kata's is how I have also been taught. That makes me happy to see. Kata is the essence of Okinawan Goju Ryu, to quote Higaonna Sensei, and the expression of those kata is how we evolve as students of the art in my view. I've enjoyed watching your videos over the months including those of Taira Masaji Sensei and I've always thought to seek out the opportunity to train with you guys. I've particularly enjoyed the way bunkai is broken down and demonstrated.

Does anyone recommend a specific order to learn the katas? I've always loved martial arts, but only now at the age of 30 I finally managed to actually make time to practice it. However, since I've been learning on my own, it's hard to find direction amongst so much vast, but sparse, information available online. In sum, what should be my stepway? Thank you everyone!

The order presented here is the same as the one myself and others in the Goju-Ryu organisation followed for decades. I highly recommend finding a Dojo with an experienced instructor to help you with your journey. The knowledge, details and minutiae of the style taught by a legit teacher within a keen group are *invaluable and essential* to the learning process. The beginning kata, while deceptively simple, can be the most difficult to master. I wish you all the best with finding the right path for you :)

As you probably know, I really do like the Kata performed as well as you did them then. I like the way you had progressed to the original Jundokan way under the eye of Miyazato Eiichi Sensei it was great to watch. I have seen you develop into a good Karate Sensei and because I am a good friend of Paul C Sensei it makes it all the better. I was wondering weather your actual performance now looks any different Paul San and now I know you have DVDs I would like to buy them and see if you have changed? I'm sorry that 2008 tainted your view of me, it was out of character for me, but I was not happy at the way things were going and let myself down a little. However things have turned for the worse at the Hombu and the Great teachings of Miyazato Eiichi via Miyagi Chojun Bushi will be lost if we are not careful. MW.

+mark weatherill Mark, thanks for being so open. Yes, I think there has definitely been an evolution in my training since this film was taken at the Jundokan (it was 1997 - almost 20 years ago!). If nothing else I've got older :-) !! In my opinion, with every generation karate changes, it's inevitable. Particularly in a style like goju as it was born as an evolving style with Miyagi Sensei. You still have offshoots of Higaonna Kanryo's karate in Toonryu and Higa lineage goju, and even Japanese Goju. So today the evolution continues and I think all we can do is to protect the principles of the style.
