I have seen the movie Gladiator, and remember an epic song with something that sounded like latin, but never pieced it together until now. Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard come together in this epic song written by Lisa, in a language fabricated by her when she was much younger. I mean, how fascinating is that?!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard for the first time, performing "Now We Are Free” live.

Lisa's vocals are still incredible nearly 25 years after Gladiator was originally released. Her voice has deepened to a lovely rich contralto which she seems to prefer using now. I think one of the earliest examples of Lisa using this deeper vocal register goes back as far as 1987 on the Dead Can Dance track "Perspephone (the gathering of shadows)". She is definately a force of nature as a vocalist despite the changes in her vocals. The hammered dulcimer style instrument is a Yang Qin, an instrument made popular outside of china by Lisas prolific use of the instrument in her career with Brendan Perry as the core of the band Dead can Dance. I think it was Lisa that originally brought the Yang Qin into the Gladiator score as the orginal demos were performed on the Yang Qin. If your ever lucky enough to catch Lisa perform with DCD her vocal power will absolutely blow you away.

Yes, I saw DCD live at the Ryman in Nashville.... There are tones that she makes which somehow do not translate to recordings. I cannot explain it, but perhaps you know what I mean? I was weeping nearly the whole show from the sheer transcendental beauty of it all!

I instantly clicked 'like' when I read the name of Lisa Gerrard. You really need to do Dead Can Dance on the channel. This band is amazing and it's not just Lisa's voice. Brendan Perry is also a fantastic singer, his style is just totally different. And the instrumentation is also superb. I saw them live several times and I always tear up just from the beauty of their performance, no other band could do that to me. You can do as good as any song by them, there's not such thing as a bad DCD song. But if you ask me, I would recommend a song like 'Rakim' in which both Lisa and Brendan got equal singing parts.

In April 2008, I was lucky enough to attend Lisa's concert in Moscow. A stunning woman, voice, thoughts, image, music ... Fascinating ... Hypnotic ... Pure ... Cathartic ... The whole hall seemed to be plunged into some kind of Nirvana The last song of the concert was "Lullaby" ... and Lisa's words in Russian: "Good night, dear people in Moscow!" ..... The asleep and relaxed hall instantly burst into laughter)))) After the concert, one of my friends said: "Either I visited Satan's ball, or in paradise ... a magical mystery ... how you can embrace the immensity and put music from Ireland to Africa into creativity, I will be impressed for a long time .... And it's not just a voice and seven notes. This is the internal structure, this is the level of the world outlook. " Thank you for reminding me of this INCREDIBLE AND PHENOMINAL SINGER.

@@TheDivayenta Where did I shame anyone's looks? It is very possible that this was too much of a personal in-joke to put out there, but no disrespect was intended. This is Mrs. Zharoff's house and I try to adhere to her policy of positivity. To that end, I really wish you would have engaged me in conversation. I would have been happy to try to explain myself a bit better, I mean, Elizabeth is always talking about music bringing people together, right? But instead you chose to judge my character based on one comment on a KZbin page that you misunderstood. But you're going to lecture me on class?

@@TheDivayenta If you have read the last reply to my comment, I apologize for the last sentence. It was unnecessary. The fact is that in the last, lets say 5 years, I have seen pictures and footage of Russel Crowe where he bears a striking resemblance to John Goodman. It's not just the weight gain, it's the facial similarity. I actually think John Goodman is awesome so it is a bit amusing to me that you took this as an insult or attempt to shame. Bottom line, I was just having a bit of fun, and I come from a time when a bit of good natured mockery was not just acceptable, but encouraged. I hope you keep watching Elizabeth's work, and have a safe holiday season.

"She's like a wise-woman... that's singing." YES! Exactly, lol, I feel like she's singing a history tale to a clan of people, continuing their stories. I can't tell you how many times I've recommended this gem to other music listeners doing their reaction vids, hoping for a minute of their "huh..." and then YOUR vid gets recommended to me today(!) and it's a veritable twenty-plus minute coup de grace of articulation... WOW! Thank you for this. Without hyperbole, I don't think I've ever heard such a mix of sadness and happy-hope all at once. I've been a longtime fan of Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins and so much 4AD stuff, but you know there... is something quite genius-like in Hans Zimmer while working on a movie soundtrack and thinking... "...this needs something... something." and decides to call on the amazing Lisa Gerrard. Again, wow.

I got to see Dead Can Dance (Lisa Gerard & Brendan Perry) for the Anastasis tour. Transcendental is about the best way I can describe it. Even being familiar with the album, their performance was unlike anything I ever heard. Even the opening act was amazing. I'd highly recommend throwing your headphones on, turning out the lights, laying down and getting lost in their live album. It's not the same as being there, but it's as close as one can get. Was really lucky the venue I saw them perform at (Wolf Trap) was PERFECT for them. And welcome to ethereal goth!

Yes Lisa has perfected her Idioglossia language, and she taught it to her twin children too. Amazing! -watches the reaction now- I am hearing her voice as a little more nasal than I am used to from Lisa, this might be affectation for the composition or it could be age, she's not in her 30's anymore... The stringed Instrument is a relative to "Hammer Dulcimer" known as Yangqin, mainly found in China tho I know they are found all over Asia with some regional changes to shape and tuning. The Wiki about such language is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idioglossia Lisa is a phenomena all by herself.

Love this, and the entire Gladiator soundtrack. For more wordless or made-up language vocalising, maybe try Liz Fraser in the Cocteau Twins - she mixes up regular words/phrases with her own "language", and has a wonderful voice. My favourite is the title track from Heaven or Las Vegas, but there's plenty to choose from!

She actually uses English and other languages, she just changes syllabic placement and emphasis a lot of the time... if you listen to, say, Frosty the Snowman and Winter Wonderland, you can get more into what I mean when you hear the songs with the lyrics you know already, and she takes them and twists and spreads and re-emPHAsizes them. It isn't true glossolalia like Lisa, but it is still magic and angelic in the way that she does it. Although if you listen to the live vocals from the Four Calendar Cafe tour, she certainly goes wild compared to the studio versions...

This isn't my typical style of music, but, this song is unique. First- the way she sings and at times "speaks" during the performance, she makes it seem more authentic as a language. Second- she puts emphasis on syllables as if it were an actual language. When she "speaks?", it sounds as if she is pleading for someone. The feminine or maternal qualities of this piece are very prominent at least to me. It's a very smooth flowing work and the 2 ladies blend very well together. Great review, Elizabeth. 👍🏼
