For years my wife wouldn't watch this film, wasn't interested in a film about war, men fighting and seeing blood and guts. In the end I did finally convinced her to watch it and by the end film she was shouting kill him, kill him, through her tears. It is now her favourite movie.

Oliver Reed, who played Proximus, the gladiator trainer, died during this movie. He was a very famous british actor with an extremely interesting life and personality. He was alcoholic during almost his whole life, with many scandals on TV shows and in his private life. During this film, he has been sober since the filming started. But he got drunk in a pub, during a bet, and sadly died. That bill never was paid (nowadays placed in a frame) and that pub was re-named "Ollie´s last pub".

I'm an Aussie and I've just come back from 3 months in Europe and spent about a month in Rome, lots to see. Went to the colleseum and could not understand how they built it. Fun fact, it was also designed to be flooded as Nero loved navy battles and many boat wars were held. So many inventions were done by the Romans like sanitation, roads, water supplies and grain stores & irrigation.

I was excited to see it when it opened because I like Ridley Scott and had seen Russel crow in some things. I was not prepared for how visually stunning it was at the time. People are more used to this speed and style of battle scenes now. This was such an emotional feast. Entertaining in the way grand old films were. I have now seen it so many times and still am moved.

What I found fascinating is that Russell Crowe did all his own stunts and is an expert horseman. Also, in the beginning battle scene, the scratches on his face and nose are real. The horse he was riding got spooked and backed into some tree branches . The director decide to leave them as battle wounds.

fun fact: the part where the praetorian guard sheath their swords is surprisingly very accurate. you see, all the roman emperors had to make sure that the guard were respected and well paid, since they were his personal bodyguards. if they felt disrespected, not paid well enough or just plain didn't like him, he would just turn on him. at the very least, they wouldn't protect him any longer, thus falling prey to assassins. at the most, they would straight up kill him. look up how the roman emperors died. you'd be surprised by how many times "killed by the praetorian guard" comes up.

The final several musical pieces were performed by Lisa Gerrard. Hans Zimmer selected her, in part, because she sings in a language she made up as a child. She says only she and God understand it, so when she sings, she’s singing to God. 😢

52:40-53:10 Absolutely right about that ending score. It's ethereal and peaceful; simple, soothing and encouraging; mournful and joyful at the same time-everything you'd hope the afterlife is. This track has become a staple of my playlists. You can go through all human emotions in its 8 minutes. From what I've learned, Lisa Gerrard sang the lyrics in her own made-up language while thinking about her recently deceased brother. Hans Zimmer made sure to record everything she sang in the studio because he never wanted to miss something she did that could never be reproduced, so in awe he was of her talent.

Two desperate people who may never see each other again.....I've seen 2 Reactors FLIP OUT, and judge them both. This romance pre-dated their spouses....It's made clear in all the dialogue. In a movie filled with evil and butchery, ....A kiss is found offensive. She says "I have felt alone all my life. Except with you." He was the love of her life. For me, it's the most beautiful moment in the whole damn picture

"So much for the glory of Rome." Not a ringing endorsement of Commodus? The last executioner-soldier on the horse was not named Praetorian; Praetorian is his position in the army, one of the most trusted guards of the ruling class.

It is not a position of the army, because the Praetorians were not part of the army. Praetorians were the bodyguards of the emperors.

A few of the historical inaccuracies in this film: 1. There was no Maximus and if there was, his name would have been rendered more like Decimus Meridius Maximus, not Maximus Decimus Meridius, in Classical Latin. 2. They were called Iberians or Basques back then, not Spaniards. The ones closer to France were called Aquitanis, Franks, Gauls or Celtiberians. 3. The real Marcus Aurelius gave up on the republic long before Commodus was born. 4. Although Aurelius was more moral than later emperors, he was still extremely detached from the Vox Populi, indeed that was one of the few ways Commodus was actually more Caesar-like than his father. 5. Commodus was not that cartoonishly evil, it took a lot of betrayals by family and friends to make him that insane and brutal and his depravity never got close to Nero or Caligula level ever and even their depravity was probably exaggerated by their political enemies, especially the Christians and Senate! 6. Lucilla was nowhere near as honorable as the film portrays her. She was every bit the conniving politician her brother was if not worse in some ways and tried to poison him on multiple occasions and paid off his friends to betray and try to assassinate him which as you can imagine did not exactly help the dude`s already paranoid mind! 7. There was a lot of incest going on in Rome at the time, however the historical records say nothing about Lucilla and Commodus being part of it! 8. Commodus did indeed fight as a gladiator in his own colosseum, however he was a hack at it and almost always paid his own soldiers to lose! 9. Commodus saw himself as the reincarnation of both Remus and Hercules. Real missed opportunity there! 10. Commodus didn`t die in the colosseum, he was drowned in a vomitorium by his own trainer and friend Narcissus who was paid off by one of the Senators. 11. This should be obvious considering they were Latin Italics, but Romans did not in fact speak English with British and Aussie/New Zealand accents. 12. Commodus didn`t say most of the things he said in the film, however his few more sympathetic quotes such as "I would have burned the whole world to the ground if you would only have loved me!" to his father and "I am the father of the Roman people and I long to hold them to my bosom and never let go" are historically accurate. Yeah, turns out being raised a Roman nepo baby by the OG stoic isn`t exactly great for a kid developing emotional intelligence, who woulda thunk, right?
