- Thanks for the feedback. In the case of your mixer, you can use any post-fade aux send as an 'FX send' - that is just Mackie's way of distinguishing between their pre and post-fade aux sends. I believe that the post-fade aux sends on your mixer are 3-8.

@@GLBProductions Hey brother if you're kind enough to take the time and help us out, saying thank you in my book is the very least i can do you know ? Now i'm watching your monitor set up video. Although i understand the underlying principle i still have to wrap my head around the manipulation of the mixer. I'm to this day still working with my old but effective Alto L-20 mixer i got in 1992 or 93 i'm not exactly sure. I have used it for all of our practices since then and oh so many gigs, too many to count. The power amp i have in my set up is a 260w Mos-Fet mod. 2350A, the effects processor is the Digitec TSR-6 and the equalizer is an Alesis M-EQ 230, speakers are a pair of passive 250w Yorkville Pulse 153 with a matching Yorkville Pulse PW 600w active sub . All my equipment is around 30 years old and i got the whole kit used, appart from the mixer which i got brand new. But it always worked flawlessly and in all modesty we have always been complimented for the quality of our sound after each and every gig we ever did. I can't take all the credit i had the privilege to work with incredible musicians for both of my bands. Problem is i stopped playing in the band myself (drums and back vocals) years ago when i moved into my condo. But i always kept my P.A. system and the guys have been using it since last week. The now got the Soundcraft UI24R digital mixer so i got a hold of my equipment last Thursday and i've been working on re learning stuff i once knew (sort of) but forgot. Namely after 2 years of unsupervised use of my system it came back with a few problems : The console has gotten dirty inside and some sliders or button now cause ''Scratchty' sounds when i move them, the fuse in one of the tops was burnt and the EQ no longer works. It shows signal coming in as soon as i turn it on, on it's own before connecting it to the system. But aside from the EQ i worked all the problems out and it sounds as good as it did before. This being said since i saw and heard my old band's new Soundcraft Mixer i've been wondering if i should just sell my old Mixer and get one for myself. I mean at first glance these mixers look really attractive and save a lot of space and money in the sense that one does not have to buy external effects processors or compressors or any of those peripherals anymore. They showed me how they EQed the whole mix and applied gates and compressors and man i have to say the result is astounding. I'd like to know your opinion about those Mixers, do you recommend them, are they worth it etc ? Again thank's bruno, i for one really appreciate your teachings.

- If you are buying second hand external effects units, I would recommend either the Lexicon PCM or the Yamaha SPX units, as they have the best signal to noise ratio and used to be the industry standard for live sound.

Thank you so much! I have a Behringer mixer with very similar layout. My problem was that in some cases, I want ONLY the post-effect wet sound sent to Main, not a mix of the dry and wet. Using Behringer's AUX Sends and AUX Returns mix the two so that both wet and dry are sent to Main. By having my returns go into individual channels as you suggest, I now have greater control over the returns and now only send those returns into the Main bus for processing. Perfect! I wouldn't have thought of this until watching your video. Thanks again!

Yes returning the wet signal into the aux returns normally does not give enough control for live sound. They key is to set the effects unit output to 100% wet and then do the actual wet/dry mix on the mixer itself. Glad the video was helpful!

- Yes - the pictures on the Yamaha website show the arrow at 1 o'clock on the channels, but at 3 o'clock on the aux send masters on the right hand side of the mixer. In both cases, the arrow does represent the unity gain position.

Yes you should be able to do this - the stereo couple switch generally means that the slave channel will mirror the behaviour of the master channel, regardless of whether the key signal on the master comes from the main input or the sidechain. Try it and see - you'll soon be able to determine if the two channels are following each other.

- If you do not want the FX levels to the monitors to change when you move the channel faders, then use pre-fade aux sends, but be aware that when you fade out the source channel the effect will continue to be heard, unless you mute the source channel.

I would like to add . . . . I am somewhat brain dead , yet this tutorial is by far one of the most comprehensible learning tools on the planet. Why ? This gentleman keeps it very basic and straightforward (no b.s.) I actually understood and almost retained the info. explained the first time listening so if your brain is messed up from too many drugs try to follow this guy and keep on the road to success ! Also , try to cut back on the drugs a bit. God gave you only one brain for personal use. You'll need to use it later in life to protect yourself from what's coming ! Credit where credit is due. Thanks. This video just saved me a lot of time and expense in setting up a gig at our venue where the band is outputting two stereo effects from a rack. Now I know I can just run them through our XLR Mic channels and not have to reconfigure the back of the mixer to use the FX Returns with XLR/TRS connector adapters. Plus using the standard Mic channels has advantages.

Good job explaining. Its something I've done many times but I still enjoyed your explanation. In fact long ago I had a Mackie mixer, then used an Allen Heath that was very similar but had better sounding preamps. I listened to your presentation almost to the end. One thing that is a potential problem with using a channel as a return is internal feedback. (Didn't hear you mention it). That is what occurs if you turn up the Eff1 (Aux3) send on the Effects return channel, sending the reverb back to the reverb. That can be a real mess, and is probably the only reason why you might not want to use a channel with a novice sound person. Good job. I would send a new sound person to this video to get a better understanding of effects for live sound.

@@GLBProductions hi, first of all you explained very detailed about the conection between a mixer and outboard effects. I have a question for you. So if I have let's say 5 outboard effects and I want to connect them to a mixer all at once won't I run out of Aux send inputs? Or if I plug the effects to Aux send and take the outputs of the effects to stereo chanells I will run out of both Aux send inputs and stereo channel inputs. What if I want to use them in the studio and have dedicated send chanells in the DAW for each effect? Thank you once again.

@@stefanalcaza5558 Yes, that's one of the reasons why many of the old analog consoles were so large - the biggest ones had as many as 16 aux sends and 8 stereo channels to accommodate all of the outboard gear needed for big shows. Nowadays of course this has all gone digital and mostly inside the console... If you have a smaller console you will need to prioritise. When working with a DAW it depends on what sort of interface box you have and how it is wired to your mixer.

May 2016 be a great year for you and GLB Productions.When I installed the TC Electronics Effects Processor to our mixing board (A&H GL 2200) I did it as recommended by the music store that I purchased it from since all of my stereo channels (with a fader) were being used. Instead of returning it to the mixing board into a stereo channel (all were being used for CD & DVD returns to the mixing board) I brought it into two single (mono) channels that were open. I wasn’t getting any response (Reverb), so I disconnected one of the Stereo Channels and connected the return to the mixer from the processor. I was successful at getting reverb, but was not successful at being able to adjust the amount of reverb with the fader as you showed in the video. Why would I not be able to change the amount of reverb using the fader? I had all the settings on the Effects Processor at 12 o’clock.

Yes, moving the fader always changes the level of the channel in the mains, assuming the channel is being routed to the mains in the first place.

Should the outboard effect processor be set up to send only the wet signal back to the mixer? or is the whole signal that is set by the processor as default ok to send to the mixer? Seems the default effect is also doubling the Orginal signal in some sense perhaps adding a phase, no?

Yes, I would set the blend on the processor to 100% wet - you then do the wet/dry blend on the mixer, as shown in the video.

In theory yes, since the propagation time through the FX unit is more than zero. In practice though, it is not significant unless you have multiple digital FX units in the same loop.
