One thing I’ve noticed about homeopathy peddlers and their ilk is that they all seem to have a habit of anthropomorphising physiology. What I mean by that is when she says things like “our cells are wise”. Cells are not people. Yet The Church Lady talks about body parts as though they’re human beings with purpose and desires of their own. It’s a subset of weasel words, I think. I always pick up on that very weird humanising of our anatomy. It reeks of bulls*** to me.

Yes! It's an interesting point, because even quite serious people will explain physiological changes in terms of "the body decides" or similar wording. I think it might be partly because the way the body works is so hard to visualise in real terms. Chemistry has to be one of the less understood sciences, yet most of what the body does is the result of very complex networks of interlinked chemical reactions. How changing the concentration of one chemical (whether nutrient or hormone or oxygen etc.) tips the balance of reactions within cells producing a different physiological outcome... It can be mind bending. Great topic to ponder!

The whole "trauma being stored in the body" is such a frustrating example of the way a legitimate piece of information is watered down to mean nothing. I often explain it as our nervous systems "storing" information about what is dangerous, even when sometimes cognitively we can't always connect the dots. If our nervous system is "out of whack" we find ourselves in survival mode often, being triggered (another word that has been unfortunately watered down). Likely the reason these massages are helpful are not because they magically unlocked trauma that was sitting in a random part of our bodies...but because they are comforting/soothing and calming the nervous system to the point where a client may be out of "survival mode" and more present and in tune with how they are feeling.

Where I thought her story with her mom was going was I thought she was going to say her mom had axillary lymph node dissection after breast cancer and then had to learn decongestive therapies like manual lymphatic massage. That could be a really helpful specialty for a massage therapist. Breast cancer survivors sometimes need a lot if help with lymphatic drainage massage after lymph node removal. But the story just kinda took a hard turn into alternative medicine.

I have primary, bi-lateral Lymphedema of my lower extremities, and let me tell you it’s no joke. And finding treatment and medical care for this disorder is extremely difficult, especially if you live in a rural area. Individuals like this “therapist” know this, and take full advantage of the suffering and medical needs of people like me who are desperate for help and relief. They get away with this, because unlike other more well recognized medical issues, Lymphedema is still very much misunderstood and research into its causes and effects are grossly underfunded. As long as the AMA and major health care organizations continue to deny its existence and impact on patients, people will take advantage of their ability to shill the public with false treatments and snake-oil cures. Btw-it’s widely recognized in the Lymphedema community that there is no cure or singular accepted treatment, only management. I already disliked Ana-now I can actively say I hate her for her part in the continuation of the false narrative around the disorder.

I've found it is true what you say about chiropractors getting into aspects of medicine that are less scientifically proven, aside from their actual chiropractic care. The chiropractor I was seeing for a couple years was excellent with their care of my spine and giving me corrective exercises-- basically PT for my spine and surrounding muscles to correct its curvature. However, when I was in the office waiting to be adjusted, they'd have videos playing about gut health, and fear mongering videos about the average person's diet and all the chemicals we have in our makeup, lotions, etc. And they'd sell you supplements right there in the office 🤦‍♀️. I just ignored the seminars they did and declined any extra stuff they invited me to. It was a shame because I did actually benefit from the actual chiropractic work they did for me. I wish they'd just stay in their own lane. Lol

In my experience with chiropractors, they were actually able to treat the root of the problem (my pelvis dislocating and pinching nerves) by giving me adjustments that got rid of the pain, where a regular doctor would only be able to help me manage the pain. As someone with hypermobility that is highly aggravated by also being pregnant, my chiropractor is the only reason I am able to walk and not need any pain killers
@Awall79
@Awall79 Ай бұрын
I’m sure chiropractors help certain issues but my dad’s best friend for years was a chiropractor…a very prestigious one with many wealthy clients….he told us all the time…chiropractors are vastly over used. Most people who use them need to just walk daily. That’s what he said so I’ve always walked for my daily exercise. I started getting chronic migraines and neck pain. My coworker recommended her chiropractor and begged me constantly to just give them a try. I went to make them happy. The chiropractor put me through an exam and literally said, “there is nothing I can do for you.” I say all this to make the point…I’m sure chiropractors have a limited usefulness but for the majority of people it’s a waste of time and even dangerous. Chiropractors can break bones, cause fractures and even trigger a stroke. Everyone should use chiropractors with extreme caution.

I work with a lot of researchers and I can tell you that they are there because they and their loved ones experience the same health issues that we all do and that they really do want to help. The idea that Drs and researchers are not taking people and their pain seriously is ridiculous. If they can't diagnose you or they do not have a treatment, there truly is nothing they can do. That is why it is so important to do all the things you can do to keep yourself healthy, eat well, exercise. And take care of your mental health.

fyi, MLD is great after any surgery. I had a surgery on my torso, and after my scars started forming (like, 6 weeks, ish?), I got my first MLD and it took down a lot of swelling. it was done around the surgical site only though, not the whole body, and it was not that super gentle touch, there was enough pressure. I kept getting those massages once a month for some time, until my tissue has healed enough and the lymph flow properly restored. massaging the scars has also helped them to be softer and heal better, and my massage therapist also worked with fascia, so overall, it was great for the healing process

The book talks often about how suppressed memories trigger body responses. So yes the physical body does not keep score or memories but our mind keeps victims of PTSD in a different state than people who have never gone through it. Read it the whole way through and read other books too, specifically books on trauma informed care which really dives into how interacting with traumatized people is different than people without trauma. Thank you soo much for your comment. From my own personal experinces with developing chronic illnesses steaming/excasterbated by trauma (one of mine is fnd), studying to work in child safety and working with children who have experienced trauma, it is soo important to understand how trauma has such a massive and complex impact on the body. It can literally change brain structure. Message therapies, in combination with psycholgy therapies, can be very therapeutic for someone, not because it releases trauma but because it can help facilitate a person to have a positive physical touch experience and to help the body not trigger the sympathetic nervous system when being touched or in close proximity to people. The human body isn't evolved/made to have an over active sympathetic nervous system which is one of the reasons why people who have complex trauma are at higher risks for developing medical conditions.

One off testimonials about cancer always make me very uncomfortable. I teach and sometimes students go into testimonials about someone they knew, and in front of other students. I want to respect student's stories, or the stories they've heard from their friends, family, other practitioners, teachers. Socially, one kind of has to because cancer carries a certain gravitas. But... every case of cancer is different. Unfortunately a lot of people look to alternative care when faced with more serious or more progressed disease. Use of medicinal plants, for example, fits better as wellness support or for subtle influence during common health complaints and less serious health experiences. You do well with these Colin!

As far as brain-gut connection, I can tell you that when I audited clinical trials at a major research university, I saw maybe 4 studies that examined these issues. I was one of several auditors, so maybe there were others as well that I didn't see. This was several years ago, so I imagine 1) even more work is being doing in this area and 2) there should be some published results by now, so one should be able to see what, if anything, is coming from this line of research.

Hi Colin, I enjoy your content but I wanted to add another perspective to your take on somatic therapy (body-oriented therapy). It's a very rich field with many different modalities , many of which have been around for decades. I'm a clinical professional trained in several of these modalities, and I work primarily with sexual trauma survivors (though I do some work with survivors of CPTSD and shock trauma). Honestly, I wouldn't be writing this but it breaks my heart that someone who watched your video would elect to not pursue the help of a somatic therapy professional just from the brief and not well informed take that you offer. Somatic and experiential therapies are growing exponentially right now with high enrolment numbers from mental health professionals because they are a huge missing piece of our education and training. We pursue them because they are incredibly effective. The more we learn about neurobiology, the better picture we have of how somatic therapy works in trauma and what makes it effective. The Body Keeps the Score isn't the only book on somatic therapy by far, and van Der Kolk is problematic, but that doesn't mean that what he talks about is wrong or ineffective. You can use the same logic to dismiss psychology, since most of the founders were incredibly problematic white men (and van Der Kolk isn't even a founder, just someone who works in the field). The field is filled with highly trained mental health professionals and science researchers who are advancing these methodologies because they are showing to be so clinically effective. Dr. Peter Levine for example wrote many books on the subject and he has a Doctorate in Biophysics from Berkeley as well as a PhD in Psychology. He is just one among many. You make the field sound like it's some fringe BS, but trainings in somatic therapy are consistently run by PESI; continuing education credits are accepted by the major accrediting institutions; and somatic and body oriented psychology and psychotherapy are being taught in major universities. You are right in that we need a lot more research into the effectiveness of these therapies, but research is not non-existent. There are plenty of studies, both in the US and abroad, in peer-reviewed journals, that show the very promising results of somatic therapy. It also tends to be a lot more effective and works faster than modalities like CBT, and in general is an excellent compliment to talk therapy. Here are a couple resource links where you can find lists of research articles: traumahealing.org/se-research-and-articles/, and integratedlistening.com/resource-center/?content=research (the latter focuses on the effectiveness of the Safe and Sound Protocol in the treatment of children and adults with autism and ADHD). Or here's one study that looked at the effectiveness of Somatic Experiencing in the treatment of PTSD: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5518443/ Somatic Experiencing Institute especially has been doing incredibly important work helping first responders (they work with fire departments, hospitals and police to train those who work in high stress environments). They have also gone into war zones and areas where catastrophic events happen to train local first responders and to help people who were affected (you can see more here: traumahealing.org/global-impact/). I hope these resources help you educate yourself a bit better, and help anyone who reads this comment learn about ways of addressing their trauma that can be very effective. No approach works perfectly for everyone, and it's important to have a holistic approach when we work with trauma. But please don't take the word of someone on Instagram or TIkTok, especially someone who is not a clinical professional, in what is essentially at best a 3 minute video, about something this important.

In Eastern Europe back in the day (like the 70s, 80s) they used to do an enema for every singe patient in the hospital regardless of what you're in for. I'm so convinced they did it to make you want to be discharged faster lol. Here's an ancient tradition for you.

I thought you were calling her therapist "MID" not "MLD" lol. I'm not surprised that Anna has to see "experts" who have a screw (or two) loose because you'd have to be to buy into some of her delulu. There is also quite literally a type of doctor that thinks more holistically, that's a DO Side note: Is that a pufferfish plush in your background? All those plushies look so cute!

This channel's approach to herbal supplements has really helped me put a big chunk of my life into perspective. From what I can tell, a close family member lived with factitious disorder for themselves, plus imposed on their children. It was around the time herbal supplements were taking off, I spent a lot of hours standing squinting at bottles in a weird smelling store whose only candy was black licorice.

I Colin! I’m a neurobiologist: serotonin in the gut is related to serotonin produced in the reticular formation (in the brain). Some studies have proved on animal models that gut microbioma can influence some forms of depression and anxiety. Extra cellular fluid doesn’t contain DNA: the dna is stored in the nucleus or in the mitochondria (that have mitochondrial dna from mother’s line). The massages are often useful for two reasons: vagus nerve manipulation during massages, mechanical “help” for drainage. Talking about epigenetics, the trauma memory could cause hereditary methylation of genes that are related to some mental issues, however, some forms are preventable AND the environment where a person grows is way more important (education, emotional distress/security, food safety, the parents)

@colin_mockery Ай бұрын
I appreciate the response! I think I should clarify since I made it seem like there's NO connection between the gut and the brain. I think the issue is that the serotonin in the gut doesn't cross the blood/brain barrier. And we still aren't really sure why SSRIs work for depression and anxiety since the "low serotonin" theory of depression doesn't seem to be true. It's complicated, and I think we still have a lot to learn. But people like Leah are taking that idea and running with it to make completely unbased claims.

@@colin_mockery oh yeah, I just wanted to clarify wha SHE was saying cause… Well let’s say serotonin is not a lymphatic product and her discourse was overall misleading 🥲 Anyway, if you’d like to learn more about the biopathology os depression, I suggest you to look at BDNF mutations in psychiatric disorders on pubmed. It’s a great start to understand why the serotoninergic theory isn’t completely accurate. If it was, we could just eat more food with tyrosine and B1 vitamin. 💗
