I just think people, including other queens and stuff, need to remember that not everyone's talent is what is considered 'drag' as it were. Why people expect every queen to be some sort of lip syncer, singer, dancer, is asinine. Not every queen uses that stuff in their performances. They asked for a talent the queens have and getting upset or annoyed it does fit in to the 'drag box' is a dick move when someone doesn't agree with the talent being presented.

Gala Varo didnt surprise me as the judges made it clear they hate 100% talent with no amount of camp or comedy and the song choice made her performance a bit boring. It's why Shannel wasn't top 2 nor Gia Gunn for their talents. That being said, Miranda was the whole package and served on all those fronts and still didn't get top 2, and that to me was even weirder. ATP it's like they want the basic original song performances to come back.

Her talent - and her runway was actually really cool to those who know Polynesian culture. Her tree of life was wrapped in a ta'ovala (Tongan woven wrap) fashioned like a corset - really clever and really meaningful (the origin of her knowledge is Pacifica). Unfortunately, due to the lack of interest in, and education of Polynesian history and culture in most non-Pacifica countries - only Polynesians and those living in countries like Aotearoa/NZ would've clocked it.

I think something this season shows is that... drag race in other parts of the world still reads as more political than it does in the US. Most of the international girls had entire political backstories to their looks (be it the Garden of Eden one or Local Currency) and some even brought politics into their talent (Queen Kwan i.e.) and these details then get critiques as not Har Har funny enough, when the understanding of drag in many parts of the world is deeper than just Har Har Funny (as is drag outside of DR in the US as well). We all know this season is primed to favor Alyssa, if only because she's the american queen judged on an american platform by american judges. I love her, but this tastes like missed opportunity.

DRUS is often political, but in a sanitised way somehow? I guess it’s linked to US entertainment culture and US politics, from my perspective on the other side of the Atlantic, it looks like Americans try to not be confrontational and thus put more emphasis on identity (culture, ethnic, religion, gender etc) than societal issues (class struggle, territorial development, ecology etc). If you talk about ecology for example, you know it’s going to lead to a debate, people will disagree on methods, so you need to be ready to stand your ground and argue your case. But if someone has something to say about your identity, well they’re just a piece of sh*t.

For me, it's just so sad to see how the talents and costumes of the other queens (who often have less money to their disposal than a Drag Superstar like Alyssa) don't get the appreciation they deserve because they are inherently political and not just funny. Its only episode one, so maybe it'll change, but from everything RuPaul I don't think so. And it's less obvious when its just US queens being judged by a US panel. But all these different flavors of international drag and suddenly RuPaul is the only (american) voice that matters.

Regarding the shape of Kween's looks. Her tree of life was wrapped in a "Taʻovala" - which is a traditional Tongan wrap made of dried flax or similar leaves. If pulled too tight, it would tear/break - that's about as tight as you're going to get it! ALSO: regarding shape, its not likely we will see any extreme corsetry from Kween this season - due to the fact she needed a kidney transplant and put it off in order to compete in Global All Stars.

@@cindyshirreffs2099 Traditionally they're way bigger as they're usually a large woven mat - and are tied belt-like with a braided rope called a "kafa" made of coconut husk or in some cases the hair of a deceased ancestor. Obvs hers is smaller, formfitting and fashioned to be corset-like, so I assume they used hooks or small ties/laces like a corset or something.

I don't know who the fuck "Lady Britonica" is. However, Lady Britannia is the classical personification of the "Isle of Britannia" first used to signify the spirit and identity of the territory as part of the Roman Empire. Similar to the way when the U.S. annexes a state, they get a state bird, a state flower, a flag. The Romans would give the new territory a state protective deity as it were. As a Commonwealth of The United Kingdom, Canada's currency(especially the modern minted gold boullion) pays homage to British leadership and lore. King Charles is still the face on many of their notes and coins.

I think Gala Varo should have been in the top two in the second episode. That pole dancing was cool and her garden of Eve look was great. I did find it funny when Kween Kong lifted the back up dancer and everyone was shocked. One of the other queens said "she just lifted a whole ass man" and my immediate thought was "wtf are you talking about? Kween Kong IS a whole ass man" 😂. And she's about twice the dancers size

Lady Britannia isn't the queen though, she's a personification of Great Britain and appears on British coins since the 18th century. Britannia did used to appear on Canadian currency until the 1920s until she was replaced with national symbols of Canada. Also Canada is not a colony of the UK. It has been self-governing since 1867 and independent on foreign policy since 1931. The King of England serves separately as King of Canada constitutionally.

Whoa… Gala Varo was spectacular in that TALENT show, while everyone else but Eva Le Queen was, meh. Also, in her Garden of Eden runway, she pulled out corn! Anyone remotely familiar with Indigenous mythology from the Américas would know that for many Mesoamerican cultures, we come from maize/corn. Gala was making a reference to that part of her heritage, which didn’t start wherever Eden was, but from the “hombres de maíz” (cornmen/cornpeople) from indigenous cultures in that part of the globe. Her interpretation of the Mexican peso was spectacular too. I kee saying that RuPaul shouldn’t be bringing Latin queens if y’all not going to understand the references. It happened with Selena Estitties, who made so many great references to Chola culture and not one person got it on the show. Anyway, Gala Varo was definitely robbed on this episode, but I can see her going home early because Ru doesn’t quite understand Latina drag. 🙄🤷🏽‍♂️

I'm not sure what everyone else's streaming services are like, but I've gotta say it's a bit disappoiting that Australia's (stan) isn't translating the queens' native languages, let alone naming them, when it comes to watching the show with subtitles. I put them on fully expecting to be able to see what the queens are saying during the challenges and confessionals but I'm left reading "Speaking foreign language" like no shit hun. Tell us what the girls are saying!
