Thank you for using the phrase "European-American" alongside "African-American". European American is a more logical term than "white" which isn't really indicative of anything.
@teddaduke5744 жыл бұрын
I know it's two years in but you're right. Especially given that also Middle-Eastern and North African Arabs are classed as white by the US Census. On average "Afro-Americans" have been in the US longer than "European-Americans" given that most are descended from late 19th century and 20th century European immigrants....

That label flew by so fast and is so underused that when I heard her speak I was thinking "Oh!! She's American too!!". I had to play that section again to make sure I got it right. So often AMERICAN is used interchangeably with WHITE as if to say there AREN'T Americans who are NOT white!!!

@The Colour Green I understand your point. The reason I say he is part Spanish as well is because his father's side has ZERO indigenous blood; they are descended purely from Spain (Iberian blood) with a mix of French and Jewish. Whereas his mother's side they do consider themselves Mexican, half indigenous and half Spanish. I am merely stating what I have learned firsthand from both sides of his family.

My husband and I are an international couple. I’m Métis/Ukrainian/French Heritage from Canada. He’s Slovakian/Kurdish/Jewish Heritage from Israel. We met backpacking Ecuador almost 6 years ago. We actually only spoke in person for about 15 minutes, but we both felt a spark, and got to know each other of FB messages. We kept in touch as friends, dated other people, and reconnected when those relationships inevitably failed (we both thought about each other from afar). For about 2 years, we gradually grew and maintained an international relationship via trips to see each other whenever we could. We almost split up, and after a long story about taking chances for love, he now lives with me in Canada, and we have been married for 6 months.

We are currently the only interracial/intercultural couple we both know. When on the video they said we really feel like we have a lot in common in the sense of interests, opinions, values, sense of humor, and stuff like that, I could relate. That's how I feel too. I'm not sure if this applies to my relationship as my partner and I are from the same country though he was raised to hate my race. He said he realised not long after meeting me he knew nothing about my race bar those ever present statistics that some white people in my country cling to as a justification for their racism. We have 2 beautiful children with another on the way and he has been fully embraced by my family from the very start (I was lucky enough to be raised in a family that didn't care about race or statistics concerning race). His father had a hard time accepting me but came around after 5yrs, his mother won't meet me. I honestly don't care about whether or not she accepts me. I'm not married to her. Though I do encourage my husband to rebuild his relationship with her. Unfortunately she has made it hard for him as she can't see our children as her grandchildren, only as an extension of my race. Sigh. Hoping for a time when she sees our babies as who they are individually rather than the wrong race.

@InLKdream7 жыл бұрын
It's not a "reach"...she said she feels "a part of it " (the movement i guess) and "a part of her felt like a black man" because she can now empathize having loved one. "A part" of her not ALL of her (because it's impossible). Just because only black people can fully understand with their WHOLE self doesn't negate the feelings of those non blacks who genuinely try to empathize especially those who have loved ones who are black. The fact of the matter is if they genuinely love each other she would mourn just as much if not more if something happened to him for that reason. You shouldn't toss back a person's sincere feelings just because they don't fully represent the feelings you want. Something is better than nothing. It's like a starving child off those save africa commercials saying to you you're reaching when you say you understand their plight and suffering because you went a few days without food. The fact is you if you haven't been his/her circumstances for a similar period of time, you'd have no clue but that doesn't mean you lose ability to empathise. It could be worse seeing as the opposite of empathy is apathy.

It's not a reach at all. If it is for her, then it is for you. As a black man, you don't deal with the same shirt we do as a black woman, period. Cops aren't shooting you guys, they're shooting us. No other version of human being will accurately understand the animosity a black man feels. Period

From my opinion, your intercultural relationship will be successful if you both follow such tips👇👇 -- Understand and Respect Your Differences -- Explore and Discover Your Cultures With Each Other -- Overlook Third-Party Opinions -- Try to Learn Each Other’s Languages if it possible. -- Have a Conversation About Religion and Your Future Plans together! 👍 There will be challenges and barriers, so my advice to you is to prioritise what you and your partner want. Our relationship with my husband is quite international. I am half Russian / half Ukrainian, my husband is German. Our first son was born in Germany and went to nursery in the UK (his first language is English). Our 2nd son was born in Malta and goes to Maltese nursery :) And I love our International family! Best thing ever!

European American? Seriously?
@thfl57817 жыл бұрын
Yes, seriously. Why African-American or Asian-American, but not European-American? It's called default whiteness--educate yourself, sweetheart.
@withlove3127 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd rather they do that then specify for other races but keep using "white" for those of European descent. Using "white" in that context continues to position "white" as the norm and everything else as a variation. European American, like Asian American or African American, highlights a regional/ethnic origin, reminding us all that nobody is the norm. We're all ethnic.
@shadowboxing70297 жыл бұрын
Why not? I think of the natives as being Americans and then there's everyone else. White Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and so on. Really though everyone should be just American but as long as those exist, European Americans should be a thing otherwise it sends a message that only white folk are actual Americans.
@dransom58217 жыл бұрын
@AJ Smith "default whiteness" what is that?
@aspebb7 жыл бұрын
D Ransom Exactly what it implies; white as the default race. For example when someone says, "I saw that guy walking" vs "I saw that Black guy walking". The first one with no race specified you'd probably imagine that the guy somebody saw walking was white and not any other race. If you're interested you could even look through a KZbin comment section where people are describing non-whites vs whites. When describing whites they'll use clothing/hair colour/ eye colour, but with non-whites they'll just use skin colour.
