That's not hard to argue... The only question is: How much of a difference will teams and team tactics make. His WC palmares isn't (yet) stellar and his UAE teammates are not with him and it is not a stage race, so maybe other cycling nations still have a word, here ...

@@DoNuT_1985 It will be interesting to see if Roglic works with or /against/ him. If they team up, that is a mighty one-two punch on a course like this. The other thing to keep in mind is both the length of the course and the fatigue from a full season of racing. And whatever the weather may bring! If the course is cooler and wet, advantage MVDP.

On using the threaded fork as a threadless, it's definitely a bodge -- and a dangerous one. Imagine taking a pipe cutter to a threadless steerer tube and scoring around the diameter of it right where it meets the top. That's actually how plumbers cut tubing (although they go all the way through). The threads are doing the same thing to this stem. When a quill is used, the quill applies the force to the tube down where there are no threads.
@SimonMartin-tz5ii
@SimonMartin-tz5ii Ай бұрын
Fitting a sleeve over the threaded portion of the fork is a dangerous modification. Threaded portion of the steerer tube was never designed for this. Traditional quill stem ensures force applied is inside and below the threaded portion.

On the insurance topic: Bought a canondale synapse for £1800 in 2019. Second ride on it was the manchester to blackpool night ride.. Got hit from behind by a taxi at 3am, just after finishing. 2 broken ribs, torn quad, torn calf, torn knee ligaments, torn ankle ligaments, and the bike was destroyed... it was a 3 day old bike... Bike insurance covered replacing the bike, and the insurance company sued the taxi driver/company on my behalf for the physical injuries too. Still with that same insurance company now, even though there are cheaper companies out there. Well worth it. Hopefully ill never need it again, but id rather have it than not have it.

The stem on the threaded steerer is a dodgy BODGE. The threading wasn't designed to be clamped and leveraged externally. It creates weaker spots which could give way. A quill stem is meant to expand well below the threading.

It really depends how much Pogaçar is marked out during the race. Van der Poel has mugged him at Milan San Remo and other races so don’t rule him out. If the climbing favourites really hammer each of the longer climbs they might be able to crack him. I still don’t think it’s just a two horse race, but if Pogaçar does get it, Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Giro, the Tour and the worlds road race in one season is quite some palmarès…

MSR isn't comparable at all to this year's Worlds. MSR only has 2000m elevation gain and "climbs" at the end are mostly under 4%. In terms of vertical meters the more suitable comparison would be 2023 Lombardia which had 4.600 vertical meters, or 2024 LBL which had 4.200 vertical meters. Both of those Pogačar won with a 30km solo. That's why Dan presented that graph as his argument. It's the cumulative vertical meters, length of the race and climbs that are in favour of Pogačar, and Slovenia can play the Roglič card. Remco has a better chance than MVDP, or they can work together against Pog & Rog.

Regarding the quill stem adapter and Dan's question about structural integrity of materials when pressure is applied from the outside (clamping) vs. the inside: Carbon fiber has very high tensile strength, and works great as material for building pressure vessels. It does not work well when subjected to pressure from outside however, as demonstrated by the OceanGate Titan submersible, which was constructed from a carbon fiber composite and imploded in June 2023 while diving towards the Titanic wreck site.

On August 9, a car knocked me off my 8 months old Pinarello F7. As I didn’t want to leave my bike at the roadside, I did not go directly to the hospital, but went to get X-rays the next day. The broken Pubic bone, broken rib and several pulled muscles are still healing, but I’m still waiting for the car’s insurance company to pay for the damage to my bike (totaled!). My bicycle is covered by my car insurance and they did pay me some money. They also pay for a lawyer who is now doing the negotiations with car’s insurance company to get compensation for my bike, for the suffering and for the time not being able to ride. Once I’ll be riding again, I’ll make sure my bike is somehow picked up after an accident, so I can go straight to the hospital if needed. Both my car and motorcycle insurance included a pick up service, so I guess that should also be an option for bicycles.

Desalniettemin was MVDP’s dominantie indrukwekkend.

Worst time with bike insurance. Had a bike-specific policy with a well-known brand which covered "loss or theft of bike while on holiday, including replacement rental costs". Bike went missing on the flight on the way my stag do in Nice. Called up insurer only to find bike had to be missing for 21 days before said policy kicked in. Fortunately the stag-do was saved by a friend who loaned me a bike. Best time with bike insurance (different company). In the course of 6 months worte off 2 brand new Canyon Aeroads (one crashed in a race, another hit by a car). Both times was provided with a bank transfer quickly for the full value of the bike, and (once physically able) was able to get riding again.

The first point that is overlooked is that there is no 5 min climb. The second climb is 1k at 8% the rest of the climb is a false flat at 3%. There are also a few climbs of a few hundred meters. The course is much more suitable for VDP than you would think at first glance. Moreover, I have never seen VDP climb as well as in the Tour of Luxembourg where he was actually the strongest and on a course that is actually just as tough as the World Cup, and Ayuso and Hirschi simply rode out of his wheel on the last hill. But anyway Pog is exceptionally good on almost every parcours that I still consider him as the favorite, but VDP is much closer than some think. So, more with Si, I guess.

Riding around the Netherlands in torrential rain for a full day, unfortunately caused a bit of water ingress, which killed some of the display. (Strangely, the device otherwise seemed to keep working just fine.) Laka swiftly replaced the device with a new one. My only gripe with Laka, is that they aren't operating in the country in which I'm currently resident in. They're by far the best insurance company i've ever had to deal with, not only because they helped me out, but because their Ts&Cs are human readable, instead of pages upon pages of legalese.

For CX fans watching him make some journalists and commentators look silly when he started road and MTB he’s always going to be the favourite…but he’ll need to sit on Pog and Remco and save the watts for one massive attack like he did in Glasgow, Strada and TdF. I get the feeling he’s only really motivated by something new which is why I expect him to go all in for MTB in LA.

There are no bike insurances available here in Finland, it's tied to property insurance. Each year there's a drop of 10 % insurance value to the maximum of seven years aka 70 %. So I've had two commuter bikes stolen just as they've turned seven years old, perfectly maintained and with replacement parts installed, and I've had like 150 € coverage from each bike after deductibles. Good stuff./s

There are a few companies that have specialised in bike insurance in the last years and they offer bike insurance as a standalone product, not part of household insurance. I'm sure some of them are also available in Finland, but you would rather have to buy it directly from them online, not through an insurance broker. While it is possible to keep the sum insured on a fixed level at the beginning, I think it will normally not last longer than 3 years. Although it depends on specific product, they do differ a lot.

Insurance: similar to someone else's comment, in the 90s, I was car doored by a driver on Kensington High Street. My insurance and legal support through my CTC (as it was then) membership meant I was able to successfully sue the driver for compensation for the time I spent on the operating table and in hospital and the large scar I'll take to my grave. Another time I was riding in the dark on Rotten Row (Hyde Park) minding my own business when the next thing I know I've gone over the bars in a heap. A large black dog, invisible to me in the dark, had run into me and taken me out. The top and down tube and forks were all bent. A new bike was covered by the insurance despite the dogs owner giving me false contact details. At the risk of a jinx I've been fairly safe since then but have had a stolen bike replaced by insurance.

If you 're concerned about the threaded sleeve on the outside of a quill steerer to accommodate a threadless stem, you could always use a carbon-style plug instead of a 1" star nut. That way the steerer is supported internally to offset the compression forces of the stem. I say a hack, and a good one.

I’m fortunate that I’ve not yet experienced an incident that would have caused me to need bike insurance, but I can see the value. A number of years ago, I started to dabble in road racing, and it seemed like there was always an expensive-sounding crash or two in every event. It actually put me off of racing - I didn’t figure I could afford to replace a ruined bike (to say nothing of personal injury), so I gave up racing. Perhaps bike insurance would have kept me in the peloton…nah, I’d have been blown out the back.

It’s not just about M/Km but where those metres of altitude are gained, regardless of distance. This isn’t a backloaded Alpine climb but is what might be described as a ‘bumpy’ parcour, with a climb and descent of equal elevation coming almost from the off and then every 30km throughout the race. 10 climbs in all (if including the initial two climbs during the 70km approach), so almost like interval training. In this regard, the winner will be the best at maintaining a high intensity for 274km, (avg 50+kmh?), but with a 12-15min threshold interval every 30mins or so. So it’s less about whether MVDP can manage a 274km race with high M/km elevation, or whether he can do so whilst doing 10 intervals. In this regard it comes down to watts/kg in two distinct zones, for which Pog is currently the undisputed master. I wouldn’t put it past MVDP, he’s a phenomenal talent and class act, but with Pog in the field this might just be too much for him. The one saving grace for him is that the descents are as long as the ascents, potentially giving his bigger mass some time to recover between climbs, so in effect a little more like Cyclocross, (albeit an incredibly long one!!), and there’s even some flat along the edge of Lake Zurich to put some power down, force a breakaway and break the elastic on some of the lighter climbers, but enough to get the measure of Pog? Could be a great race, one for the history books.

So i have had insurance, however i started it 8 years ago & it was 6 years ago they contacted to me to say it was now void. This was 4 weeks after being stabbed in London. Curiously i asked why it was void & they said that due to the attack being for a rolex watch i was wearing, i was too much of a target & they would be happy to pay for any bike i may have had stolen they wasnt prepared to cover my health or any injurys i sustain trying to hold onto it. This made me very angry & i then went onto persue them for breaking their contract & i got a resolution.

Insurance. Had a big crash in Spain about 22 years ago and did massive damage to my bike. Broke carbon forks, carbon tt bars, seat post, one pedal and, most expensive of all, both front and rear Spinergys. Went to Sigma Sport in Kingston who costed the repairs at however many thousands of £s and then called insurance to get the bike fixed. When speaking to the woman on the phone and explaining the damage and cost of repair, she replied that it would be no problem, she just needed to get the details filled in on the computer. The first thing she asked me was for ‘Make and Model’, to which I replied “Trek Y-Foil”. She scrolled down her list and then said I can’t find your bike listed. I asked why not, and suggested she look at other Trek models, to which she replied “Nope, I can’t find Trek. I have Honda, Kawasaki, Ducati…..”😂😂😂. She couldn’t believe a ‘push’ bike could cost so much. But all credit to her and the insurance company, they sorted out the repairs, 100% and no quibbles, once she’d got onto the right page. 👍

@RobinD1980
@RobinD1980 Ай бұрын
There aren't many helmets to directly compare between the Virginia Tech and ICL tests. What's more, both have a different number/score systems. However, taking the Bontrager Specter Wavecell as an example, ICL rate it 2.75/5 (3 star, effectively), while VT rate it much better at 5 star (overall score of 10.79), ranked #43 out of 241 helmets tested. Not encouraging to see such big differences in test results for the same helmet, though I suspect differing crash test methodologies may have some part to play. I suspect simulating a 'standard' crash is quite tricky, and I'm not even sure what % of crashes the simulation covers. Most crashes likely aren't reported (as to how damage to the helmet was presented), so no idea how the information comes about. Having taken a fall off my bike 2 weeks ago and suffered a concussion, I was pleased to have been wearing a helmet, though I do wonder how I'd have fared wearing a different one...

Gentlemen, did I hear you say that vdP would get backed up by the Dutch squad? In your position and with your experience you well know that this race will be run as usual on a trade team basis, favours and scores will be repaid and the matter will be settled by alliances between managers and other interested parties. But I don't have a problem with this - a bit of intrigue adds to the fun!

No, for dutch Dan is right here. In dutch it would be Van der Poel or mister Van der Poel, but including a first name it would be Mathieu van der Poel or M. van der Poel. Apparantly in flemish capitalisation should match your birth certificate but can go either way. Not sure about english rules for this though.

I don’t really see how anyone can be priced out of cycling when you have these community bike projects / charities. I think the real issue is lack of safe infrastructure. It feels like people are basically using price as an excuse when asked why they don’t cycle; because they maybe don’t want to admit that they’re mostly just afraid. That’s not to say they wouldn’t be justified in feeling that way. I feel more scared now than I used to because of the bigger cars, distracted / angry drivers you see everywhere. In terms of the cycle to work scheme, I think it should be abolished, and the government simply get rid of VAT from bikes and accessories. Plus maybe an additional subsidy for certain types of bikes to make sure the discount is as big as it can be under cycle to work.

Well, it's basically a four way toss up: Pogi, MvdP, Evenepoel, and all the rest lumped in together (provided all non Slovene, Belgian or Dutch riders team up against them). So if t's a bet of Mathieu or not, you have better odds at not, but it's still one of the three safest individual bets you could make for the race.

The problem he has is that no one will work with him if Pogocar takes a flyer.. so he has no choice but to follow then attack him. The repetitive nature of the climbs work to MVDP’s favor mentally. If he is there with 2 climbs left it’s as good as done.
