IMPORTANT! Switzerland has de facto 6 languages. 4 are official. 3 are italic (French, Italian, Romansh) and 1 is germanic (Swiss High German)! the most spoken language is Swiss German (not “Swiss High German”) but that isn't official nor consistent in itself. Some Swiss Germans have difficulties to understand other Swiss Germans (I am such a guy. I pretty much communicate in 8 languages but have difficulties to understand a few dialects in Swiss German spoken in other parts of Switzerland. but my mother language is Swiss German). But because of this we use a sixth language and it’s called ENGLISH to communicate if an Italian Swiss, French Swiss, German Swiss and Romansh come together because it's the easiest language of the languages we learned at school, instead of using one of the 4 official one. But even with our big differences we Swiss value each other Swiss in their diversity.

I dont believe the food map. Here in finland if you hang out with friends and go to their homes they wont start cooking food for you, but ofc if you visit family or something they will. Same if for some reason a stranger visits they will always receive some kind of pastry or whatever. Isnt this the same everywhere?
@a.z.9836 ай бұрын
Not really the same. For example, in the Balkans if I invite a few colleagues (not even friends) e.g. to write some report together, or if I'm invited, there will be cake, snacks, coffee, and if you're there at lunch/dinner time, you'll be invited/offered to eat. Scandinavia might have fewer total tourists, but Norway and Iceland both have *huge* numbers compared to our population... 14:31 Yeah, Norway completely stomps everyone else in the winter Olympics, but not do much in the summer ones... I just looked it up, as of 2023 Alcohol consumption in Russia is 6,4L/p which should be among the least drinking countries depicted on the map. 9:31 no, its not the Cyrillic alphabet. Its the old Cyrillic alphabet which was developed in 988 and is currently being used NOWHERE apart from museums and historians. Last time it looked like that was 9th of January 1710 when it was simplified and 10 letters were removed. Then communists in 1917 removed 3 more letters, because the sounds they represented no longer existed in any of the Slavic languages within the Union.

The map showing which European countries have won the men’s FIFA World Cup tournament, is misleading because, the UK, doesn’t compete as a UK team. Instead, the 4 constituent countries of the UK have their own separate teams. Thus, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, compete with their own separate teams. Of these 4 constituent countries, only England has won the tournament. I acknowledge that this distinction not being shown on this map was unintentional. Thus, this channel isn’t deliberately trying to deceive its viewers. That said, I’ve been following this channel for a wile now and enjoy all of the content posted here. Lastly, I appreciate all of the time and resources it takes to make these videos. Keep up the good work.

@HistoryPhilologistDude3 ай бұрын
In easier words: Switzerland’s linguistic landscape is indeed fascinating and complex, reflecting its rich cultural diversity and history. The country officially recognises four languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. These languages mirror the cultural regions that make up the Swiss Confederation, each contributing to the nation’s unique identity. Swiss German, the most widely spoken language in Switzerland, is not officially standardised, and it consists of various Alemannic dialects. Interestingly, these dialects can differ significantly from one region to another, sometimes leading to communication challenges even among native speakers. As you’ve noted, this can be a unique experience for those whose mother tongue is Swiss German but who still encounter difficulties understanding certain regional dialects. Despite this, the Swiss people demonstrate a remarkable ability to navigate these linguistic challenges, often turning to English as a common language for communication. This is particularly true in situations where speakers of the different official languages-French, Italian, and German-come together. English serves as a neutral and practical bridge, facilitating mutual understanding and reinforcing the sense of unity within the nation’s diversity. What stands out most about Switzerland is the deep respect and value that Swiss people have for their linguistic and cultural differences. The ability to appreciate and celebrate diversity while maintaining a strong national identity is one of Switzerland’s most admirable qualities. This linguistic and cultural pluralism is not merely tolerated; it is embraced as a fundamental aspect of what it means to be Swiss. In conclusion, Switzerland’s multilingualism is more than just a practical necessity; it is a symbol of the country’s commitment to diversity, mutual respect, and unity. It is a testament to the idea that despite linguistic and cultural differences, a strong and cohesive national identity can flourish, grounded in shared values and mutual respect.

The map shows the predominant religion, not the religiosity of the country, and that is still Catholicism (this makes about 70% of all religious people) in Czechia (atheism is not a religion). Just a minor note: In statistics it is important how we read the data. Your data is accurate, but it would be good to point out that about 30% of the population did not answer the question when asked, otherwise your percentages are meaningless. If you were to address the religiosity of a country it is better to rely on data from people from whom we know the answer to the question ie. 68% atheists and 32% theists (19% religious theists [13% Catholics] and 13% non-religious theists [claiming faith but no particular church]). Of course, this has nothing to do with this video.

There is an error on the map of EU candidates. Ukraine and Moldova received candidate status in 2022. However, Moldova is painted, but Ukraine is not!
