A380-900 NEOPlus is what EK wants. They won't get it as the supply chain has been disbanded and the cost to recommence the production line would make a very limited production run too costly for even Emirates. As you pointed out the cancelation of the EK order/options, no freighter version as well was the reason RR was just not interested in modifying the Ultrafan for the A380.

They are not suggesting new aircraft production, but rather upgrade of existing fleet (new engines, wingtips, perhaps avionics)
@Emperorvalse
@Emperorvalse Жыл бұрын
@CaptVirtual That's interesting. So like the DC-8-70's which involved switching the JT3 for CFM65 and recertification. I think they were also zero houred. It wasn't cheap as only 110 (20%) were done. The USAF also re-engined some of their 717 based C-135's using the same CFM65. Still the program would require both Airbus and more importantly RR to do the design, integration and development then have the planes recertified. All doable but would cost $ which neither party are probably willing to spend while they have profitable alternatives.
@Infiltator2

And RR was always the ones blocking it. Airbus always wanted the NEO, because on the rest they wouldn't have needed to invest much. @@Emperorvalse

Even though I haven’t flown on an 380…I think it’s a marvelous piece of engineering…it is. However, it is a truly niche aircraft and I believe came at a time of where no one knew where the aviation industry was going. It’s almost like the 757…where the timing building it was off but now that it’s gone…now others want it or want to keep it flying for the longest time possible. I just wonder why Emirates only went with the 380 instead of a combo 747-8/380.

Emirates had 123, nearly half of the total delivered. Singapore Airlines had 24. Lufthansa had 14, British Airways and Qantas each had 12. A few other customers had 10 each, and everyone else had fewer delivered. Some passengers really love them. Some complain that embarking or disembarking a near-full A380 overloads almost any concourse and is a pain. Even most large airports cannot handle regular A380 flights, just emergency landings. Airbus has disassembled their production line. No engine maker seems interested in creating or modifying an engine that could serve as a super-efficient replacement engine for A380s: the A380 is not the B-52, and Emirates is not the U. S. Department of Defense. It seems pretty obvious that there will be no A380neo.

Perhaps Emirates used to love the A380, but that's no longer the case. Even if Airbus had built the A380neo, Emirates would have never ordered 100 of them. This was more of a ploy from Tim Clark to push Boeing. Once all the issues with the 777-X have been resolved, Emirates will likely order more, but nobody wants any more quad engine aircraft.

The 777x is likely to the next replacement both a politically useful order and with suitably generous interior design and potentially higher SAF e-fuel cost, the means to which A380 fans will move over to. Over time, as the 380 disappears from the sky, those fans demanding a 380 experience will forget. However we may see the arrival of the open rotor design and composite lightweighting offer potential for a larger A350 to compete with the 777x as the 380 alternative. At present, its just capacity constraints vs production backlogs that keep the 380 in the sky. Airport capacity will not change unless passengers accept distant airports that dissipate noise/free development expansion or locals surrounding suburban airports accepting ever more planes to offset capacity vs demand (not a chance). Passengers want to go to airports nearest to magnet cities, residents surrounding airports do not care about a quieter plane if more of them, undermine any noise benefit of a "quieter "one and airports cannot extract more throughput capacity unless they can solve this (and they don't control aircraft design). As fewer 380s land, so does the reason to invest in passenger transfer for a 380 requirement. Just as the 747 series stopped production way after it had already lost , we may only see the 380 repurposed as the ultimate aircargo unless shipping solves its carbon footprint challenge.
@sainnt
@sainnt Жыл бұрын
@@stephendoherty8291 Agreed. With regards to turning the A380 into a cargo aircraft, I believe that the biggest challenge has to do with creating a certifiable cargo door for the upper deck. The alternative would be a swivel tail, similar to what Boeing has with the Dreamlifter. Also, they can remove the second deck altogether. This would make it possible for the aircraft to carry super large items and create a market similar to that of the Antonov AN-225. The investment for the modification would be huge, but possibly worth it to someone.
@stephendoherty8291
@stephendoherty8291 Жыл бұрын
@@sainnt While possible there are plenty of 747s now sitting abandoned. Many ended final flights only during Covid and many will be cheaper retrofits than the A380 plus a Jumbo cargo plane is a known conversion. While the A380 offers space (just below the rare AN-225) , the opportunity to convert the remaining passenger 747-8 into cargo is a cheap deal with no demand outside this market for passenger use. There is also the plenty 777-300-ERs still around that offer low fuel burn and a cheap conversion as there was already a freighter version designed. While the A380 has the space advantage, its fuel burn and limited A380 capable airports make it less attractive plus its an unknown conversion. With a cheaper to buy used Boeing and reasonable fuel burn this offsets any space advantage where regular low cost runs outweigh carrying capacity unlike shipping where capacity wins over fuel burn per ton. Idle old A380s are now more valuable as spares than freighter conversions as even Airbus has ever more limited spare parts to hand and most A380s are still "young"
@sainnt
@sainnt Жыл бұрын
@@stephendoherty8291 Agreed, but my point has to do with the A380 having a unique role as an aircraft capable of carrying exceptionally large cargo. The Antonov had 6 engines, highly inefficient, but it was in high demand because it was able to carry things that would otherwise be carried on a ship. A converted A380 could fulfill such a role, and only a few of them would be needed, so there would be more than enough units to source for parts if a few of them were converted.

Maintenance wise in A380 take minimum 6 month to 10 month for a A380 for a heavy check , it is not a maintenance friendly but if the next version of A380 can reduce the most component in the aircraft from being overheated than is it good .The aircraft should also be maintenance friendly to aircraft mechanic not only to for passenger comfort only .

It’s too ahead of it’s time but for sure we need an aircraft of this size soon as the skies and airport slots clog up. Airlines that operate these aircraft should be given priority for slots. It’s only fair for what the carriers invest and and the extra space they free up.

Probably not viable, though I'm not sure that's a shame. For me the 380 has been the best plane I've ever travelled in. I've not tried the 350 which may be similar, but cheaper to operate and a bit smaller. I have been on many Boeings - as well as a few other maker's planes. The Dreamliner is perhaps the next most comfortable from my experience, though it's a lot smaller. Years ago I used to like the 747s a lot, but they can be noisy and use a lot of fuel I believe compared with modern planes. One 777 I flew on - I've been on several of those and 767s and 757s - was truly dreadul regarding noise, and unfortunately it was a very long flight. Mostly in recent years I have flown on much smaller aircraft, many of them by Airbus. So probably not going to happen for a new 4 engined aircraft, but I hope the existing fleets of 380s will continue for some time. Airbus have said that they will continue to support them.

The issue is not that the A380 is to big, but the A350 is to small to bridge the gap, so is the 777x, while the 747-8 is to large to bridge it. There need to be an aircraft in the middle between the 777x and the 747-8. And happily that is exacty where airbus got no aorcraft what so ever. A A360 would be perfect.

As the growth in passenger traffic clearly shows, there will be an increasing need for large wide bodies in the future. The 380s, 777-8s and A340s will keep flying for many more years to fill the gap until new twin jet production catches-up with demand. In my opinion, the 777-9 and A350-100 offer sufficient capacity to satisfy the need for large airplanes for probably the next 20-30 years.

Could the winglets not be added to the existing 380s and why doing this while buying used 380s by emirates not extend this use out further as the Boeing Jumbo series. Other options are to add just 2 new engines for low burn cruising allowing either the outer engines to cut the performance they need to have on hand or just use the outer engines as takeoff and high airtemp offset power capacity (as the far east will experience more often). Cannot see why the "maintenance cost refinements" could not be offered by Airbus for the 380 now. Winglets were added to existing planes before (I recall Ryanair did this) and the cost of adding a new winglet and aircraft hanger and downtime would be minimised. Short of another airline asking for a 380 , this is just fantasy. However Emirates are correct - its slot capacity, passenger flight demand and more efficient planes that can fill that flight slot that means capacity per plane must rise or regional airports offer the answer to this constraint. Even with land based regional switches to trains, flying over mountains, deserts and water means regional planes still rule even with higher fuel costs cutting boom discount seasonal ticket orders and airport demand

I don't understand, why a new engine on an existing plane is such an effort in terms of regulatory approval. Still the solution might be a capital increase in Airbus paid by Emirates (say 1 billion). If the A 380neo program goes through, Emirates owns valuable Airbus stock, whereas if Emirates goes bankrupt, at least Airbus got "paid" partly for the development cost. Both parties profit, if everything runs as planned and both parties don't risk too much, if either party goes bakrupt.

RR was more the issue. They were not going to develop a new engine again for such a low volume aircraft. They have better more profitable things to focus on.

A380 wing isn't as efficient as it could be as it had to fit inside the 80m box... so my dream A380neo, would be one that is quad RR Ultrafan, full composite fuselage and wing, with folding (Airbus has patent for downward folding) wingtips, and baseline length of 80m (7m more than the A380ceo-800), unless Tim Clarke/Udvar Hazy can get ICAO to bump the max size box to say 90m long x 80m wide (from 80m square) and make something in the 85m~90m range... oh and the A380neo probably needs a mask as per the A350XWB...

Flew my first A380 in Premium Economy a few days ago with Emirates from Dubai to Auckland (16hr flight). I hate to say it but I prefer the 787 😬 I was so excited to fly the A380 but was left feeling extremely dehydrated, my skin and lips were dry to the point of cracking and the windows were so tiny! I was in the aisle seat and couldn't see a thing, where as in the 787 I still had a view and never felt dehydrated.

Dehydrated is your own doing, you can request drinks anytime and I would recommend non-alcoholic as alcohol has a dehydrating effect. About the windows, you are right, but most of the time there isn't much to see out there anyway. And as far as I am concerned, Boeing planes are annoying noise buckets, I prefer Airbus.

back in 2012 AIRBUS also put forward the A380-900 Neo which was to be a stretched variant of the A380-800 double deck wide body quad jet . . . it'd have featured a world first hybrid aero propulsion, in the interest of better fuel economy & greater range . . . AIRBUS should have never launched the A380-800 in the first place, instead the plane maker could have introduced the stretched A380-900 Neo . . . similar to the A350 program, AIRBUS launched the A350-900 wide body jet instead of the A350-800 . . . which by the way, was the right thing to do . . .

No no no there is no need to panic because I have a better solution to replace the A380 this plane is already being made by Airbus so it shouldn't be a big problem for them to make it here's the problem Tim Clark wants these A380 NEOS because of the capacity has and because of what it can do for his airline and slot restricted airport the slot restricted airports do need the A380 Neo but here's the problem to do a c-check this plane would be enormous and not cost-effective so here is my proposition what is Airbus takes there a 350 stretches the plane and makes it not a twin-aisle plane but a triple aisle plane that easily can fit more than eight hundred passengers in one cabin class if feasible and done the right way Emirates could have their showers and have 640 seat in this a 350 2000 plain plus it would mean that Emirates airlines would have what they want in a single deck configuration the plane would be using composite materials and it would be much much more because of the composite material because this plane is a single deck plane and you have the wings that fold up like the triple 7x plane does this would be a huge win not only for Airbus but also for Emirates and all the other airlines and plus this plane would not be a quadrant but would be a twinject plane which means that many customers who want high-capacity planes could get this now you could lower down the seating and increase the range so theoretically this plane could fly say for example 20 hours if done right and if you decrease the seat you could get a couple more hours out of this plane the training would be the same as a normal a 350 plus the training would be very minimal on the airplane so the cabin crew would not need huge training it would be little bit of training the cost would be 90% less than operating an A380 and plus you get the same wings as the a350 - 1000 and the Airbus a350 - 900 plus the same runway length that the a350 - 1000 uses which is a really well sold plane now think about the dash 2000 that Airbus could come out with this would be very very fuel-efficient and it could be a replacer for the Airbus A380 and airlines wouldn't have to worry about anything else but they would only be looking at the bottom line is is this plane fuel efficient and yes this plane is fuel-efficient so from my point of view having a triple aisle plane would be very good because you could for example have two in the left three in the middle three in the other middle part of the plate plus you would have two on the right side of the plane now that being said airlines can also be used like a twin jet so you can have three seats on your left 6 seats in the middle three seats on the right which would be also a good thing for the airline's but this is something that maybe airlines like Turkish airlines Malaysian airlines Cathay Pacific airlines at don't like the 380 they could easily get this plane and it could solve all of Emirates airlines issues plus slot restricted airports another big thing is for example Emirates airlines can have their showers while Etihad airlines has their residence suite and apartment suite what do you think about this Airbus a350 - 2000 with three aisle configuration let me know in the comment section below have a good day DJ aviation

Emirates should just commission Airbus to do a A380Neo. They can pick up all those frames in storage and begin a test programme. Later, after the Neo is certified, Emirates can buy up A380s from airlines that have dumped them and convert them to Neos in addition to their existing aircraft to be converted. I doubt Airbus has much of a business case for new build Neos.
@achmadosman9807
@achmadosman9807 Жыл бұрын
It is an unfortunate truth that it would cost less to build new frames from the existing jigs, than the cost of stripping a used jet, examining the parts using advanced tech and then putting them back in the air. The A380 wing spar problem is a small example of micro fractures. Better to build new.

Perhaps the new A380 neo engines, if it is considered will incorporate a different type of avaition fuel which is cheaper than that being used today. That should be taken into consideration by the engine manufacturers to solve the A380 issue.

Personally size wise I think they should redesign the 747 with the NEO and more seating on the top deck. If height clearance is an issue with the engines, then redesign the landing gear. A lot of companies are needing large capacity planes for certain routes, and Im sure this plane would sell. They also need to make sure it can be utilised and sold on as a freighter.

@@ThorAU The problem is the floor strength, the floor is strong enough for passengers but not for cargo (weight does matter in planes). And that floor is an integral part of the structure of the plane, so converting a passenger plane into a cargo plane is not that easy as it is for a B747.
