We never got the Smart fortwo diesel because regs killed em. I believe that CAFE is to blame for them trying to fund all these ridiculous abominations. See, that dumb truck is probably selling at a loss. All these companies axed their dirt cheap models. Mitsubishi mirage has gone up from $10500 to $16900. And to get that deep ocean pearl, you have to buy a dumb CVT. CAFE ruined manuals too. I absolutely despise CVT push belt and ev car's lithium batteries. At least Toyota still has the NiMH battery that is long life and safe albeit not as potent as lithium.

Seems the BOLT is a huge success, overcoming the battery fire problem. To date I'm sure the project has lost money, and suspect at $27,500 it still is losing per unit. But it's proven to be good quality and popular, so bump it up to make it profitable! Given it's proving to be good quality and popular, I think folks would tolerate a modest increase.

Reason is partners in Korea, who supplies electric batteries and equipment to GM. Hunday/Kia make electric cars too. Batteries supplied by LG or Samsung. GM competes for the batteries with Hunday/kia, I guess GM just lost competition. No wonder technology level of Hunday/Kia mich higher than GM. Sad story, GM had to start own batteries production like Tesla did. GM managers put billions of dollars into self driving technology instead.

Agreed. I have a PHEV SUV co. car (BMX X3 30e xdrive, max e-range is 44 km at start) and travel 21 Km to/from work each day; I fully consume the battery on average, each day. Speed is never above 80 Kmph (45mph) and I pickup about 8 Km in additional battery range while going downhill (to work). I usually have between 30-34Km of e-range when I leave from work to go home. Full L1 charge can be done overnight (~ 8 hours). This type of driving gets me about 87 mpg (2.7 L/100 Km). Considering gas where I live (Switzerland) is about 2x the cost compared to the US, on avg; in terms of my monthly fuel costs it would be akin to getting around 44mpg in the US with a mid-sized gas-powered SUV. Not bad! However, this is a leased co. car (under managed service). I would never own this type of car for fear that the BMW tech (+BMW PHEV complexity) would require expensive service outside of warranty. Four years and goodbye. If I were to buy a PHEV on my own dime...TOYOTA or LEXUS. Nothing else. If I usually travelled long distances or needed heavy hauling power...DIESEL.

Since conventional "I.C.E." powered vehicles use a by-product of the running engine to provide cabin heat, It makes ZERO sense to have an electric car anywhere where the temp regularly goes anywhere near freezing. I live in Pittsburgh, PA (USA) where yeah, we get muggy summers. But to me A/C is still a luxury. (I have had MANY cars with no A/C!) But not using a heater is a deal breaker, it gets cold AF here in winter. Losing 20% of range for heat is not viable. No electric car for me! I see less of a future for electric cars in Canada than I do for Pittsburgh.

I ended up save $150 per month on fuel and paying only $40 for electricity. There is almost zero maintenance and no oil charge, no smog check. My husband was a supervisor at Jeep for close to 4 years in the assembly plant and one thing I can tell you is the electric vehicles are not dependable nor reliable and actually sales for electric vehicles has stalled and is actually on a downward trend. The chargers are not efficient you cannot get the mileage that they say because so many things affected. The car is way almost nothing because they don't have a engine that can pull the weight so if you get into an accident a lot of times the car is toast. They're expensive and unreliable because they're unreliable they become expensive. The average battery price is $2,000 at its low end. Jim is right in what they're saying they're doing. Scalantis stopped the electric vehicles at the one facility because it's not cost effective. Not to mention the batteries for electric vehicles have far more carbon produced than anywhere near what a gas car emits. Anybody can look that up.

In Pa. we can shop for electricity suppliers and there are nearly 100 suppliers available. My rates have been consistently lower due to shopping. I pay a fixed rate that is not adjustable. As far as being a dissatisfied EV owner, nothing could be further from the truth. I drive my Bolt 500 miles for 20 bucks in electricity , try that in your ICE vehicle.
@somemovingpictures

While my electric bill has increased slightly due to home charging my EV, around $18-$20 a month, my electric rate has not increased at all. In East Tennessee at least, there is no relationship between the amount of electricity consumed and the per kwh cost of electricity on a residential account. Perhaps Scotty is referring to a bill increase, not a rate increase. And, home charging is about as good as it gets. For the ICE folks, think of it as a gas pump in your garage without the smell. As far as time to charge on Level 2 at home is concerned, I don't think Scotty sleeps at all, but I sleep around 8 hrs/night, plenty of time for a full charge for the next day.

I had an older Honda accord and was due for a new car so I bought a Tesla. I drive a lot to meet customers as well as drive the kids to school so I was paying about 250-300 a month in gas. With the tesla my electric bill rose about 60 to 70 a month that’s over 200 a month of savings. I Charge overnight when needed and never have to worry about a gas station As for the A/C in the hot weather of central Florida I loose about 13 miles for every 100 miles driven or about 6 an hour if parked and the ac at full blast.

I disagree on the solar panels. My nana got them. Her electric bill is $7 per month (smaller house). Then she pays $83 a month to finance them. That’s $90 a month for the next 20 years with a 20 year warranty. It’s been a lot easier on her finances. Her electric bill was $300 per month before that and her warranty covers her solar panels during the entire 20 years. Her roofing is also done around her panels. They do not need to be removed to reroof.

my experience owning a crv, the Japanese version was very expensive to up keep. I wonder if GM is doing this because the parts are becoming too expensive or not available? Either way, things are changing in this country. "American-made" is changing the way companies and consumers inhale the economy and it's products. Out sourcing is being eliminated and the market hasn't set up a way to keep up yet. Make products here. Create jobs. Stop relying on Korea and Japan. It's expensive because we've exploited cheap labor for a long time.

No matter how expensive my home electricity rate is I still save over paying for gasoline and I have the benefit of leaving home with a full charge. At three dollars a gallon of gas a car with thirty miles per gallon my home rate would have to be over forty cents per kWh to make them equal, hint it isn't and never has been that high Plus you can install a NEMA 14-50 in your garage inexpensively and use the mobile charger that most EVs come with and charge overnight at an average of 25 to 30 miles of range per hour when rates are the cheapest.

I assume you took into account Rhode Island is in the north where they don't get as much sun. (Avg daily 3.5 hours vs CA w/ 5-7 1/2 hours) Localities differ in how much more utilities are willing to pay for electricity produced by solar vs what they sell it for. (subsidizef) If you're counting on a warranty you better make sure installation is done by a big company that won't go out of business in a few years. (more expensive) 10:01

Our payback was just under 5.5 years with a 25 year warranty. I'm in central Florida. We're saving about $500 a month on our previous electric bill and another $300 a month in former fuel costs. In my world that almost $10k a year in savings. Tell me again how the math doesn't work?
@bluecollarbeat3156
@bluecollarbeat3156 Жыл бұрын
Scotty's example was in Rhode Island. (3.5 solar kwh/m2day ave) You're in Florida (5-6 solar kwh/m2day ave) Subsidies vary. My question is what does your utility sell electricity for and what does it buy your solar electricity for. This is the subsidy and affects the economy of having solar. My local area used to buy solar at a rate 4x what it sold electricity for. A year ago California was buying it at 25-35 cents but threatening to lower it to 3 cents because that is what the big solar farms were selling it for. Utility/ government subsidies play a consideration.

@@bluecollarbeat3156 where did you get your insolation data? Looks like Rhode island is at 4.2 and CA at 5.38 peak sun hrs... it's not based on hours of sunshine. Why choose CA to compare? Rhode island and Fla are net metering states so it's not based on buy back...fyi. with the 30% tax credit do the math and speak to people with experiences like @Amaya.
