I'm an old man, so I can recall that the world's most expensive production car in 1962 was the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud at just under $18,000, at a time when a Chevy Impala sold for $2,800. To be fair, $18k in 62’ is just shy of $190k today still cheap for that class of car through. Although $2800 for that Impala would be a reasonable $30k today! These companies love to claim “INFLATION! INFLATION!” But are selling 2x~4x the current inflation rate. Greed, plain and simple.

The big three are disconnected to a point they in the same track as AMC . Mopar bought jeep and that's all that left is jeep. The big three need to build value. Cars that are affordable to buy easy to repair because they can buy software or books on diagnostics. Standardize the systems and make them reliable. Along with the aftermarket support of late model and older parts availability and or upgrades to update / upgrade systems . These policies will have the domestic automotive manufacturers the traction they lost.

4400$ is equivalent to 37000$ in today's money. But progress in technology has made car manufacturing much cheaper than before. But salaries never went up according to the price hikes in real estate and cars. In the 70s, you could buy an apartment for around $750 in Sweden. A VW Golf was around $1500 that time. But now, young people can't move out from the parents house because everything is too expensive. A small apartment is around $100000! Cars have become much more expensive now. A Volvo XC90. When it was released in 2002, it was around $ 35,000. But now the price starts at around 95K.

Right behind it was a Ford F150 Raptor and it looked great...then i checked the price out, $93k and just laughed and i couldn't stop laughing as i left the dealership. The sales guy was looking at me and i was just shaking my head laughing. Now i could buy it but WHY would i spend that much for a F150 with some customization on it? No, ABSOLUTELY NOT, not now, not ever. The moment somebody wastes that money and drives off the lot they will lose $25k in "value" as they pull out to drive away.

Here's the big problem: When you add together designing, testing, retooling factories, and the myriad of other functions required for a new/redesigned model, it doesn't cost much more to manufacture a large vehicle than an econo. The difference in cost of the actual steel and other materials involved is almost inconsequential. BUT the auto manufacturers can sell the larger/more luxury models for a much greater margin. A dealer would probably have to sell at least three Ford Focus to make the same profit as one Ford F-150.
