It could even be intentional (although in the end i just think that both players were happy to call it a night - it's also the event that proves the players have become more powerful than the organising body - we kind of all knew that as sponsors run events, in any sports these days, but yea this really was a fracture point. Personally i think FIDE either need to rapidly modernise and alter their interface and make it more appealing for a wider audience and spend money on engaging them or the top players will form their own league, with their own sponsors, their own professioanal world Chess Championships (better copywrite PWCC lol) etc and FIDE will be left protesting but will be left as a second class society that allows amatuer's to progres sup rankings. They have to allow it after what happened with the jeans controversy. If the jeans issue had not occurred, FIDE could have told Magnus politely to play on. In fact, Magnus probably would not suggest it even. But Magnus know FIDE telling Magnus no a second time would look really bad on FIDE.

@@da96103 True. If the jeans incident hadn't happened FIDE would never have allowed. Also, this weakened and cheapened the FIDE world blitz championship title. I think Magnus wanted to screw FIDE over. I don't think he would ever agree to something like this in freestyle chess.
@marchingknight1117 күн бұрын
I mean, what was the alternative? If Magnus and Nepo agree to share the title, and FIDE says no, you have to play it out, and both agree to withdraw, or simply agree to 1 move draws ad infinitum, what then? Do they go get So and Duda, who may have already left the venue for their respective New Years plans, and try to start a whole new finals round at 8pm on New Years Eve? What if _they_ don't want to play? Do they now backtrack all the way down the leaderboard until they find 2 people willing to play? The only reasonable alternative was to propose an Armageddon game, but maybe FIDE did that and Magnus and Ian said no. If that's the case, FIDE didn't really have any other options.

The only difference being, a Gold medal can be shared because it's in the rules and there's a precedent, whereas for what happened here, wasn't in the rules and it had never happened before. While I completely agree that it is at the least unfortunate they went the co-champion route, I do have to mention that one assertion, that "you have a gold medalist, a silver medalist, a bronze medalist" (26:43) - that Olympic medals are awarded only singly, is simply false. From 1896 through 2024, every year there's been some instance of co-medal winners, 156 times over the course of Olympic history, 40 of those times with gold medals. Still an unfortunate situation.

to share gold in a major sport has happend some time before. Magnus didnt break any rule or changed it by force. he asked if they can share the title because they dont wanted play anymore (reasons unknown). Magnus never enforced written rules like you described. even the Jeans rule was unclear and not as specific written as the Head of FIDE claimed. Even in this event Magnus got a disadvantage, he got 3rd placed in the seeding because the tie-rule said the higher average opponent elo counts more (Magnus as the highest ranked player will never win this, because his own elo doesnt count). thats why fabiano was 2nd placed. Ian deserved a title, we all know it. Magnus wanted to give it Ian finally i think, but still dont want to lose. The found a compromise and FIDE was fine with it. its okay if you dont like the outcome, the move is understandable but worth to discuss

There are many precedents of sporting titles being shared throughout history. They have always been seen as a sign of sportsmanship and mutual respect for your opponent. All that is really affected by this is that you can't call one person the outright champion in 2024. There were two people left in the tournament, they were both happy with the arrangement and so were the organisers. Not really a big deal IMO.

The future for chess(life) is the idea that everything is in constant transformation, without fixed fuel. Rather than being, we are always becoming, exploring new possibilities and escaping rigid rules and identities. It's an opening to change, diversity, and chess-experiment. Great sportsmanship!
@_Mountain_Dave17 күн бұрын
Here's the thing, and whilst i don't agree with the decision to share 1st, i also see some genius to this. I actually think some of this could be intentional to create drama, create headlines, as in the whole week. The sponsors must be clapping their hands this week, they are the real winners for what they paid. When ever does Chess make headline news in mainstream media, Magnus not wearing jeans was front page news on the BBC even in the UK. This will be just as big, if not bigger. What this does is actually raise the profile of Chess into the mainstream (sadly it has declined from lets say 30 years ago) as a game. So if you look at the bigger picture the events of New York this week is it a good thing or a bad thing for chess, well it's bringing alot of new eyes to the sport. With more eye's/clicks comes bigger advertising potential and thus prize money and that is only going to be better for the players and long term for the game to survive as a sport (outside of the top 20 players re prizemoney to play professionally). Probably what we need is more drama if we are going to get Chess as an Olympic sport and drawing a much bigger gate for venues. There are challenges, especially around tech and how we keep the game safe but if the game is to evolve then getting headlines is not a bad thing. Just an alternative take. I would equate it rather like misfit boxing, its terrible but one thing that cannot be denied is it is raising the profile of boxing into new audiences, which then can be harnessed into the purer side. We need to make Chess cool for kids to pick up and play, not seen as some nerd game, the growing youtube content creators help with this, as do the younger generation of players coming through. Grow the player base, grow the demand and being honest it's getting to the stage where I see a potential split like we had with Phil Taylor and the darts, or more recently Golf. The reality is we live in a different world than 30 years ago, advertisement and media revenue is king and to be honest players like yourself, Magnus and all it would take is a couple of the top other's (not going to name name's but another American, couple of the Indian's and Chinese we all know who they are) and you could literally start your own league, raise bigger advertisement schedules (granted more media work and commitments no doubt) but actually move into the management of a new league. The players that have online communities/fan's and understand the digital interface have alot of power if harnessed in together but more importantly need to modernise the game to fit for the 2020's, not 1960's. There is so much potential for what is a global game, its just poorly led at present in terms of evolving the interface and product to fit in today's culture. One thing i would add, the production team and media at chess events are often shocking, not so much the presenters, but the lack of audio at press conferences, or levels or slow to update match boards, or poor inteviews. The FIDE press conference for the winners a classic example, simply terrible audio levels, given it was on their stream, their event and content. I'd go as far as saying the popular content creator's that cover the events do a better job.
