Hey LT. You are doing a great job with your videos. I want to give you some advice. I'm a physical therapist and constant kneeling on your knees without protecting the joint, will lead to injury. People who do carpet installation would never do a job without good knee protection. Please add a good set of knee pads to your tool collection. Take care of yourself, so we can keep watching your videos.

On you GM 14 bolt and the Dana 70, the u-joint size is 1350 series. You can get a new pinion yoke 3-4-5731-1x, and strap kit 3-70-28x for the Dana. If you pull the yoke, install a new seal, and maybe a new pinion nut. On final installation when filling with oil, it needs that stinky posi additive. Dana 43161 or ATP AT-210. The clutches in that Pow’r Lock will pop if you forget the additive. I have found the additive in the blue toothpaste tube doesn’t work as well in the posi diffs I have. Driveshaft length for a slide-in slip yoke transfer case should have the slip yoke approximately 1 1/2” from being bottomed with the vehicle at ride height to allow for suspension travel while driving.

The 14 bolt is twice as strong as that Dana 70 specifically because of the 3rd bearing on the pinion. The reason the 14 bolt got shelved by gm is because of its weight and there are more parts to manufacture. I would have done a brake swap on the 14 bolt and stuck some spacers on it, but that doesn't make for good teli. Keep up the good work!
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 3 жыл бұрын
the Dana 70S was used in vans that had a GVWR up to like 12,000lbs in some applications, so I think it will be plenty strong for this application, but the pinion nose support bearing is a nice touch on the 14b

CHEVY/GMC have been staggering Trac widths since making 4x4 trucks. Reason is the engineers wanted the the rear tires to dig into fresh ground for better traction instead of following the track the front tires and the loose dirt made from the front tire. Plus back in the day the front and rear pumpkins had limited slips and or lockers and they really dug in. I thought about this conversation for my 98 diesel suburban but I have the G80 locker and running 285/70/17's and it looks good. The ones in the next generation that had the quad- steer had the rear tires out but looked "off" to me.

Love the videos. Back when those trucks and the corresponding suburbans were new. To fix that issue we bought Alcoa’s with different back spacing to correct it. We couldn’t rotate them anymore but they looked better.

I'm Extremely O.C.D. and even aggravate myself at times but, I was raised to do once and do it right and enjoy it! 97% OF people would've done the wheel spacers and took the cheap&dangerous way out. I completely understand the difference between front and rear wheels being offset bothering people. But in a 2500 suburban with the 454 big block with 4l80 transmission it's hard to give up that 14 bolt full float rear axle especially when plan on doing solid front axle

I have a 1996 2500 Suburban with the 454 and 4l80e trans as well and want to do the same exact same thing to it that you did instead of spacers. On my Suburban I upgraded the hydroboost to a 2021 hydroboost and man it makes a huge improvement on braking assist and almost feels like a newer truck besides still having drum brakes in the rear which I hope to eventually change to disc with doing this conversion in the future love watching your channel on things that have been bugging me about my suburban as well, was sad to see the Suburban go.

I have a 2001 Chevy 3/4 ton suburban the last thing I'm worried about is how far the tire stick out underneath the underneath the suburban I pull I didn't close car trailer with a 1974 firebird with a 565 Big block in it for drag race and then the 6 L was getting tired so I got another lq4 and turned it into a 6.7 L for those of you that don't know the math that's 48 cubic inches I added 44 cubic inches 2 my 6 L now the 4L80E works like it's supposed to going up a hill pulling the trailer and drops in the drive finishes the climb to the hill shifts back into overdrive and on down the road never dropping in the second gear for 4L80E is the way to go

The rear axle is narrower for a performance reason I guess you could say. When you’re driving through snow or sand having the rear wheels narrower helps the vehicle track straight. When the front and rear have the same track width the truck tends to float and move left to right.

I'm looking at rear axle swap options for my 1995 Ford F-250. Achieving closer to similar width as the front would be nice but having the addition of disc brakes all around would make it worth while for me. I would be adding an automatic locker with the replacement axle out and being prepped anyways. I'm mostly likely going to use a GM axle since later Fords switched their bolt pattern to 8x170 instead of 8x6.5. A van 14 bolt may be my best option as it's 70" WMS to WMS and the Ford front end is a hair over 69¼". This series on the axle swap had been helpful in showing me what amount of work I have to look forward to so please keep it up!

@brickcasper 3 жыл бұрын
I still disagree. If a vehicle slips off a jack on the way up or the way down the front wheels being chocked won’t make any difference. If fact the jack wheels rolling or the vehicle wheels rolling are what prevent the vehicle from sliding off the jack pad. If the vehicle wheels are chocked and there is any debris on the concrete and the jack doesn’t want to roll and then you have an issue.

LT, for the look I think you did a great job, mechanically as well you nailed it. BUT I can’t go along with the axle choice. Picking a somewhat obscure diff would be a deal breaker for me. It just so happens that I just wrapped up an E-locker install on this same D70S. I ran unto a post on pirate4x4 that gave me a little heads up about axle lengths because of the side gear locations on the regular D70 vs this D70s. It was helpful and you may want to research it if you plan on ever doing an upgrade from the factory LSD.

Awesome job LT, nothing better than a stock upgrade of LSD with disc brakes as well not to mention also widening the track width all at the same time. Personally, I can’t stand it when a mild upgrade is completely captain obvious due to its mounting or visible location when stock appearance is the goal. Upgrading while keeping a stock appearance is always a labor of love vs performance and a lot of times difficult to do on certain upgrades. Can’t wait to see what you do with the engine in later videos!!!
