When I was a child my Father would, each day when he got home from work, put the loose change from his pants pocket into a little cup. He told me I could keep any pennies I found there for myself. Those pennies added up and financed many items I wanted - model planes, a small microscope, and a cool train set! His offer also taught me something about honesty and respect. I could easily have snatched an occasional nickle or dime from the cup but his trust in my honest nature was more important to me than cheating on our agreement. An important lesson that I still value.

Thank you for those excellent reminders! I’m trying to declutter the need to be “productive” and “busy” all the time. It’s hard to not feel guilty about allowing myself to rest, yet when I do, I’m more productive, inspired, and engaged. This may sound grim, but when I remind myself I’m not going to be here forever no matter how productive I am, it makes it easier to slow down, enjoy the present, and catch my breath.

Sometimes convictions are getting someone stuck. Like minimalism can. Minimalism might help some people. But not me! I have recently found out it was my minimalistic nature that got me stuck. I could never find my only pen. I did not have enough clothes or the right ones. I gave stuff away that I needed a week later. NO MORE MINIMALISM for me! I have gone and obtained a second, sometimes even third and forth of every item I own. I have obtained more and more tools and craft items, and organize items to store, and find them easily. Now I am always in the flow, and can create everything I need. I have a garden I created out of this. And numerous pieces of art. I found a career in upcycling everything. I upcycle all my "waste". I am a more environmentally friendly person now. And a much better artist. I realized I was a minimalist out of necessity. I had never lived long enough in a space I could call my own. I did not have roots. I didn't have the literal space to sort and store things. I never had the time to do so. I am so happy now. Your message is for people that have to deal with living and working in a small space, or for people that want and need to travel. I hope you will settle down someday. And plant a garden. Nurture all your stuff and love your material manifestations like I am able to now. I created so much abundance and authentic beauty I am able to share that and even earn a living. No more guilt! No more minimalism: take up space! As much as you need to breathe and live. There is nothing wrong with it. Surrounding yourself with beauty is never wrong. Declutter all things that don't give you joy. That's it.

@@fannyfroeschl are you a creative as well? I'm also a collector. I make collections of what others find waste. When I need stuff, I go to my own collections. I make the thing I want. Then use it. When it works, I upcycle the whole collection into that new thing. I make clothes, furniture, tools, gardens, lamps and much more. I'm collecting spaces right now. Like abandoned buildings. I ask owners if I may use them, and I'm not sure yet where this will lead yet but it might be that they become galleries? Not sure. So even space can manifest. If you're a hoarder... You might just be an artist with not enough space.

I prioritize beauty in my surroundings because it makes my daily life more pleasurable. To some it might seem like a waste or frivolous, but it improves my life to love everything in my home, especially since it is where I spend almost all my time. I feel this way about flowers as well. They are a simple joy and that is so valuable to me. I'm lucky to have a garden now where I grow my own flowers alongside herbs, fruits and vegetables - they all feed me in different ways. ❤

I'm a bit more cautious about decluttering now that prices are rising and things may be too expensive to replace. I'm trying to make them last longer by careful adjustment, repurposing and repair. However, fresh flowers can lift the spirit like noting else can!

I love the idea of decluttering my plans. I tend to throw a million balls in the air and then decide which ones to catch at the last possible minute. Decluttering the to-do list is a wonderful idea. I tend to have a gazillion ideas of what I want to do but probably will never be able to because it would take me a few more lifetimes.😃 Finding your own brand of minimalism is also so important. I think when you buy flowers and they give you joy, it is not a waste of money. The flowers have given back something very valuable and even priceless in return. Decluttering the what ifs... I have a sideboard full of sheet music for instruments I don't play right now but might play again. I still can't declutter them nor the instruments I'm not actively playing, it would break my heart. So I keep them. My brand of minimalism. 🎵🎶

Hi Ana. Your continuing contemplation on various aspects of life is a wonderful reminded to think about how we each live our lives. I have a couple of comments regarding your message: I would urge you to let go of the thought you might be wasting money when you buy cut flowers. If those flowers feed your soul and raise your spirit, there is no way they are a wast of money. As you say, we are each unique individuals who are working on being true to the true self we are continually discovering. If your inner truth is served by fresh flowers, that is a wonderful thing. As to sharing with others our challenges and how we deal with them (to the appropriate people and under the appropriate circumstances) helps us reflect more closely on those challenges and/or helps others feel more comfortable with their challenges, than I think that is a wonderful things. As always, peace and blessings to you and Brian. 🙂

Yes. Focus on yourself, not others. I think that sums it up. When learning music, you won't get better by comparing your voice (or instrument) to another's. Each voice is unique. It has its own timbre , tone, color. You can't make an elephant sound like a lion. But why would you? Just as each of them add to the music of the air, so your voice adds its own quality to the richness of life. And what you put into it is exactly what you'll get out of it. Focusing on others, what you perceive they have or do or are, is not a path to your own fulfillment. Thank you again, Ana, for another wonderful video. Much food for thought.

I am decluttering my belongings. I have a very small living space, so my big question is, "Would I prefer to keep this item, or would I rather have the space it is taking up?" My goal is to have a place for everything instead of needing to move things around to create temporary space for doing things.

I enjoyed hearing your list of what to declutter. I have been learning to declutter the calendar. There are just so many hours in a day. I probably still cram in too much but I'm trying not to. This was a very honest, intelligent and inspiring video, like all your others, thank you for sharing your thoughts and suggestions on minimalism and more. I have no problem whatsoever in decluttering things (and people) but it's also true that I tend to attribute life changing value to some material things I deeply cherish. By which I mean that I often think (hope) that the moment I'll own that particular thing I love, this will upgrade my life and fill a void I feel inside. The fact that I'm constantly disappointed don't keep me from hoping the next thing will do me wonder. And so it goes on. I also think that's really difficult to draw a clear line between what you really like and may honestly matter to you and what is just superficial longing inspired by the outside. Not sure I could make my point here, I was just trying to say that practising minimalism is not an easy task for me 😔

We consider with my husband to pay more towards our mortgage to pay it earlier and when planed it we reviewed all usual expenses. Some of them are maybe not necessary for some people, but we use and enjoy it, but find that we are guilty of ordering food a little too often. So we keep our entertainment apps and cut food ordering to one or two per month. That exercise remind us how much we already have and we start use that more, so that have even more contribution to our life.

What a great list of suggestions, Ana. Currently, I am being challenged to reduce my reliance on and time-wasting with screens. They are so convenient for storing information and photos as well as for communicating, but they can also be a trap. You made me thing with the photos. There is a different quality to printed photos as to those on screens, the trouble is that they do take up a lot of space and need careful storing and collating. Thank you again for your refreshing perspectives.
