He was only 21 yrs old in that video. It makes you want to cry. He had such talent and was taken away from us way too soon. He passed at age 32 on Sept 25th, 1980. There will never be another one of him. We got one Bonzo and that was it.

This is the ultimate compliment to John Bonham: Led Zeppelin as a rock band was unique in that each of the 4 main members (lead singer, lead guitar, bass, drummer) all are generally regarded as being in the "Top 5 Greatest" discussion insofar for their all-time particular position. And yet when Bonham died, despite the SUPERIOR talents of the 3 other members of the band to have the ability to carry on with a replacement drummer, they all knew there was no replacing Bonham, so when Bonham died, Led Zeppelin also died. It's really the ultimate form of respect to the GREATEST, John Henry Bonham.

Just think if you were back in 1970 and witnessing this god behind the drum set, and listening to what he was producing with that drum set not only with his sticks but also with his hands which nobody before has ever seen. He was on a level that will never ever be matched. What you just watched was a jazz master playing with the power of Thor's hammer in the hallowed halls of Blues and Rock and Roll. And that Chinese cymbal that you thought you heard that he smashed with his hand was actually his gong that is set up directly behind his drum kit that he did strike intentionally at that point with his bare hand. There will never ever be another Bonzo. God broke the mold when he created him.

Can you imagine what endurance he had and how much of an athlete he truly was to do that but this is right in the middle of a possibly 3 hours set or even longer. So he's played a long time before this and he will play a long time after this. And then if they're on tour, this happens over and over again. Now you start to get the idea of how tough some of these guys were man.

The look on your face is priceless. Welcome to the world of John Bonham. I was lucky enough to see Zeppelin twice. They were Gods on stage. Perfect for each other while playing. 4 men playing as one. Moby Dick was the set break in their concerts. The band took their break while Bonham played his solo and after this Bonham takes his break while the band plays 2 or 3 acoustic songs like battle of Everymore and going to California. Love this band

The GOAT of rock and the perfect example of collaborative virtuosity. They are to be highly regarded. @dallasschwartz7135

Bonzo was one of a kind. He would do 20+ min long solos each night somewhere in the midst of a 3 1/2 hr long show. As Jimmy would say when asked why he stood in front of Bonzos drum kit while on stage: "I could literally Feel the pulse of his bass drum in my back..." Early on in Dazed and Confused from the concert film The Song Remains the Same filmed at MSG during the 1973 US tour. John Paul Jones "misses" on a Bass note and he looks over at Bonzo with a "Ehh not bad, right?" look on his face. Bonzo chuckled and shook his head "No mate, you missed it" so Even in the midst of a song on stage, Bonzo could tell when somethin was amiss... Another time Jimmy when referrencing Bonzo, said if he was in the middle of a guitar solo and it seemed as if he was "stuck" Bonzo would "insert" a triplet where it wasn't meant and it would let Jimmy know he was in the mud... For all that is made of his "power" and there was Plenty of it! One thing that gets over looked IMHO is how "delicate" at times when the song called for it Bonzo could be. Perfect example of it is on Trampled Under Foot, where he's just pouring the coals on and then all of a sudden he's just ever so gently flicking his snare with his left hand stick so as to be barely auduble yet it so perfectly fits that transition as to make you realize that if played with any fullness it would have ruined the song. This was the genius of Bonzo, knowing When too BE the Bonzo an when to pull back and slide in almost invisibly... Today when I hear the Thunder Bumpers firin off in the distance, I smile an think too myself: God must have asked Bonzo to play Moby Dick yet again... RIP Bonzo

I love your analysis of the subtleties he had, but often isn't credited for. I saw some footage where Jimmy wasn't in the best shape and was, to be frank, soloing far too long and Bonzo just started with some crazy fast fills. It was like he was using his drums to move Page along out of his self indulgent moment, it was funny, but so necessary!

He was so amazing - it's stunning, laughable and will make someone weep. I wept a few times watching you stunned faces. This was a good emotional outlet for me - I remember when he died. It was terrible. He was "walking" his fingers across the snare and earlier he punched the gong behind him with his fist. LONG LIVE JOHN HENRY BONHAM ! ❤️💔❤️

No words are necessary. Bonham would have just loved that you appreciated his contribution to the rock music world. John was a force for sure and his son Jason is just as much as a force. Led Zeppelin will always be the Rock N Roll band of the 70’s. Robert plant once said in an interview that there was no way that they could go on as Zepplin without John. Zepplin was a four piece band, and without John it just couldn’t be, and he could not imagine himself being in Zepplin with just the three of them and not have John so, therefore they ended it. Robert, of course, continued on as a solo artist, has had many bands of his own, and as of late has been touring and collaborating with Alison Krauss, who is a bluegrass, fiddle player and vocalist. Robert and Allison are a force of their own. You might want to check out their work. It gives me great pleasure to see the younger generation discovering, listening and loving the music that I grew up with. I am almost 61 years old and throughout my lifetime since I was 16 I have probably attended close to 300 concerts and I still go. I’m already looking at the lineups for this year, I will continue to go to concerts, share the music that I grew up with and have you youngsters promise me that you will keep this great music alive! My kids and grandkids have already committed so at least there’s that. And if you look at the artist that you grew up with or are listening to today, you need to hold her feet to the fire and tell them the music of yesterday is the quality you want for today. If they cannot provide that for you, then you need to kick him to the curb and find artist that will. And for God sakes get rid of auto tune! Either you have the talent or you don’t, and if you don’t make room for those who want to put in the effort. Do not ever settle for anything less. And that is why us older folks say that today’s music sucks! Rock on dude and thank you😎🤘

@@bishlapno way u said that. Neil peart was a technician on the drums, and rightfully nicknamed “The Professor” for a reason, Bonham was a powerhouse. Neil used a giant kit because he needed it for his and rushs style. Bonham had the “small” kit because that’s all that he needed to produce such monster sounds. In both ways they are inspiring and truly masters of the kits and their respective music genres. I’m not saying one is better than the other nor am I defending Neil. Just saying.

13:45 I wouldn't say that he glided his fingernails over the snare but I think you have the right idea. If you've ever played around with a snare drum, with your hands, it's fascinating man it's so responsive. And clearly he's demonstrated he knows how to play any sort of hand drum really really well and he keeps mixing in like the Thundering Kick Drum when he wants or that insistent hi hat with his left foot when he wants. But yeah you just kind of like pitter-patter your fingers like falling rain and you kind of move them across and by moving them across the surface of the drum head you hit the different areas that have different resonance, different tones different responsivity all that stuff it's just it's a nice way to just have fun and just create the sound texture. I love how observant you are about all the stuff, I really really am.

And it wasn't featured because they do end at least a song or two very dramatically with it, but here it was in the dark but he just did that long run off all those hand hits on the various drums and then tagged that gong just slightly enough to hear the vibrations from it and that's what you were hearing.

Early in his career John Bonham was told that the mastery of the bass drum was the key to the future of music. He played heed to that advice and ran with it-he did more with one bass drum pedal than most double bass drum kit players have done. His love of getting the right kick drum sound led others to experiment with deeper bass drum tones. And when drum machines like the TR-808 came along, it took it to the obvious next level-with that deep 808 kick tone that rapper and hip hop artists devoured.

You watched a Master at his craft. The true meaning of the word... because he mastered those skills. And he was only 21 at the time!!! Can you even imagine what he would have done had he lived longer? It's a crime that he was lost.

Zeppelin is my 1st... and 2nd favorite band, for about 44 years since I was 5 years old. As a drummer, he was my biggest influence, by far. He brought thunder with finesse. To be objective, no, he's not the best drummer ever... but he is probably the top rock drummer. Go watch a jazz drummer, they will blow your mind! Neil Peart from Rush, Stewart Copeland from The Police, Bill Ward from Black Sabbath... some amazing rock drummers... I'm pretty sure they were all Bonham fans.

Record company was going to fire Rush and told them they needed a better sound/songs,ect.Rush knew they couldn't match Zeppelins groove so the Rush boys copied YES.In effect Rush was YES II.

I've played drums for 50+ years. Bonham, Moon, Paice, Peart were big influences amongst others. Saw Buddy Rich live back then. They called him Bonzo, Hammer of the Gods, for good reason. You just watched the best recorded version of Moby Dick. This was as good of a rock with jazz influence drum solo that I've ever seen. It's a masterpiece.

It's just a few seconds later, yeah you referenced what I referenced before, and yeah it's the bass drum but normally it's called the kick drum anymore because it has that kick pedal on it where are you stomp on the pedal or in his case you finesse the pedal, which is connected to this little Mallet or beater like you would normally use with your hand to hit certain things? And then it hits the surface of the bass drum. That's why they call it the kick drum. With your body you are making it kick the surface of the drum and it just feels like kicking anyway when you're doing it and don't forget that's going on with the right foot, but his amazing use of the hi-hat which is controlled by a pedal underneath that brass assembly just to the left of the snare drum? He was a master at keeping that going also. And then all the stuff on top of it of course.

I love the emotion you feel. It's genuinely wonderful to see a young man, who I believe is a rapper/Hip Hop artist, really enjoying this beautiful music. I saw them at Earl's Court in London when I was 19 .i was and didn't really know it at the time. More power to you sir
