As a mother, Freya’s story arc really touched me. I remember feeling so conflicted when she made a “mother’s promise” to protect Atreus because it was sweet but I was also wondering 1. Who her child was, 2. Why she wasn’t saying more about this child, and 3. Where was this child or what happened to them? Then, to find out Baldur was her son and how she damaged him so badly while trying to protect him was just so powerful. And to go to the lengths of giving him permission to kill her if it’ll lessen his pain, even if it didn’t make it all go away. Damn, what a game! This spoilercast was awesome! Thank you guys for doing it and thank Cory and the team for making such a great experience!

There's also the fact that Odin made it so that she can't attack anybody, so her response to Kratos killing Baldur can only be verbal, which makes you wonder what she would have done if she could attack.

patrick howard once the story is over Mimir tells you that when Kratos and Atreus were in Jotunheim, Freya came to him and asked him where her Valkyrie wings had been hidden. He then says something along the lines of it looks like vengeance can't be stopped after all.

patrick howard After the end, if you use the quick travel a conversation springs up where Mimir tells you that Freya paid him a visit while you were busy with the ashes. He says she asked about the location of her warrior spirit aka her wings (if you defeat the Valkyrie Queen you learn Freya is the leader of the Valkyries and her wings were taken by Odin). So, looking towards the sequel we might be looking at a three way battle. Odin and his gang, Kratos and Atreus, and then Freya (and possibly her Valkyries).

There's been some serious revisionism regarding the original God of War games ever since God of War 2018 came out. People act like those games are just okay when in reality they are damn incredible. I went back and played them recently and honestly I might like God of War 2 more than God of War 2018

She didn't initially like GOW 4 but she watched me play it and she heard Kratos tell Freya he had to dig up his past, she went nuts, she said because of her love for the og series, the scene where Kratos gets the blades of chaos back is tied for top 2 of her favorite scenes of the franchise.

A huge overlooked hint that Atreus was Loki, was the fact that none of the lore mentioned Loki. Like at all. Not to mention he had an infactuation with the Giants.

The only lore that mentioned either Kratos or Loki was in the giant's realm. I don't think anyone but Faye knew Kratos and Loki would play a part in the Ragnarok prophecy, possibly because Kratos left his entire pantheon after killing the Sisters of Fate. Since the people who write every Greek's fate are dead, I don't think Kratos (or by extension any offspring) would be part of a prophecy specifically because he does not have a set destiny. I think the only reason Faye could prophesize about them was because it involved her future fate of having a child. I also wonder if Faye is Jörd from Norse mythology. Mother to Thor, the personification of the Earth, she is a female jötunn (giant), and considered a rival to Odin's wife Frogg (aka Freya). Which, depending on what alterations they might wanna make to that core story, the identity does kind of sound like her (assuming she had a past Kratos was unaware of with Odin)

The world serpent also says he seems familiar, and the prophecy says that the world serpent was sent to the past(present) from the future fight with Thor at Ragnarok (Loki's the serpent's Dad according to mythology - and the last mural shows him birthing it)

Cory has given me the evolution of Kratos I've WANTED to see for the longest time! Kratos has grown A LOT since he was waging war against Olympus, that he now see's that his past cant be ignored, but embraced and used to make his future better. It REALLY drove that point home at the END of the game when you are looking over the mountains of JOTUNHIEM, seeing the death the Norse gods have brought to the Giants, and how Kratos and Atreus NEED to the be the GODs that will protect and defend, rather than fight and destroy like the AESIR Gods in the world now, and the Gods of Kratos' past. (counting Kratos himself)

Just finished the game a couple hours ago and I’m already wishing I could go back and play it for the first time... The reviews, the 95 metacritic score, the universal praise, it all spoke facts. From the fluid and complex combat to the well fleshed out story and side missions, everything is masterful. From the breathtaking world and mesmerizing music to the awesome characters and amazing set pieces, God of War reinvents itself in the most beautiful way possible. It joins games such as The Last of Us as proof that games can be a form of art. I’m sad that the journey had to come to an end but I’m glad I got to experience it. Games like this don’t come around too often. 10/10. GOTY. Best game of the generation. It’s in my top 3 games of all time. This masterpiece is the definition of epic!

Even though we keep hearing about the negative things in gaming like the micro transactions, loot boxes and death of single player games. I can still see there is still plenty of people who care about the craft and the way games make us feel and I felt that pulsing through this game. Dazzle.Novak Hard to compare them really. As a cinematic experience I'd say Uncharted is better. But as a game God of War probably is better. It's hard because I enjoy them in different ways. The story and moments in the plot in God of War did feel lazy (all the back tracking) but was overall fine. So hard to beat a perfect Uncharted game

The first clue that the Atreus is Loki, is wehn Kratos uses the name of his Wife after the first fight with Baldur. He calls her "Faye". In Norse mythology the mother of Loki is Laufey. So its more like Lau-Faye. If you keep playing after the game Mimir calls Atreaus' mom Laufey the Just. Also Kratos' name in the giant language runes was Fárbauti, Loki's father in Norse mythology.

Getting the blades is one of my favorite video game moments of all time. I was planning on stopping playing, it was 1 AM, and Kratos tugs his bandages and says he will need a different weapon and I was COMPELLED to keep playing and ended up playing until 4am. It was insane.

The best part about the combat for this game is the triangle button recall for the Axe. It makes it so that you can throw the Axe and embed it in an enemies head, and then sprint directly toward them and when you are close enough... holding R2 and having it shoot back to Kratos mid-jump so that he can slam the Axe down and absolutely crush the enemy. So satisfying...

I am not sure what Greg means by asking Cory if he is offended by bad impressions of the previous God of War games. There are only a few people who I hear saying "I hated Kratos, he was a bad character" and all of those people seem to have missed the points of those games. He was never meant to be likeable. He was meant to seem like an A-Hole. Those games were just as well reviewed as the 2018 game. God of War was considered a phenomenon when it came out, and it was a system seller. I bought at PS2 specifically to play God of War. I bought a PS3 specifically to play God of War 3(although I haven't yet). God of War 2018 would not have been made, nor would it have sold as well if the previous games in the franchise didn't make the God of War name something that all console gamers knew meant "awesome game".

Never seen such an open and honest game dev/director as Cory. His passion and attention to detail have made this one of the best games I've ever played. I'm a couple of hours into post credits. Getting destroyed by Valkeries, even on easy! It just shows that there is still so much to do even after the credits roll. My only issue is the combat. But I think that it's more than I'm getting old, not the game.

The references to Egyptian mythology, the Loki reveal, the Thor ending, the Freya being Queen of The Valkyries, the teased but unexplored Realms, the remaining Gods, the reaction by Freya, the fact that Baldur was actually sent by Odin to track Faye are just some of the reason why I am incredibly excited for the next game and this franchise as a whole. But I know the next game is years away so the wait is going to be agony!

That's what's great about the skill where if you've thrown your axe, you can hold L2 to aim at an enemy, then press R2. The axe will come flying back into Kratos' hand as you're in midair and swing downward, hitting the enemy and causing an ice explosion once the axe hits the ground. Let the enemy run toward you as you're "empty handed" and just standing there with one hand up, and as soon as they think they're about to strike, BAM. Jumping ice explosion axe attack out of nowhere.

I enjoyed every minute of this episode. i honestly had so many questions that were answered throughout the hour and a half. the one thing i wish was brought up was the sounds in the game. Not only when the axe was recalled back to you but the fact that no matter what dialog you were having on the boat, would suddenly start to echo while you were in a cave. That was brilliant! Great job all and i cant wait to get back to trying to platinum it.

Magni and Modi was the best fight. Great game. This is an instant classic. I beat the whole game on Give Me GoW difficulty, it forces you to level up your gameplay skills.

I think Sony is doing a great job at pushing forward these creators to the the spotlight like we do with great directors in film. I love the moments where after hearing so much about how cruel Thor is and what he's capable of that any time there is lighting, especially when Atreus was sick, I feel scared that Thor will show up or that he's nearby or watching in some way. Just by word of mouth there is such a presence of a character is absolutely beautiful.

Another thing. By how much Thor and Odin are discussed about I thought they would show up, but it got to a point later in the game that we hear so much about what they've done but they have never been properly set up as villains for Kratos and Atreus, but that the promise set is that Baldr was the final man.

Adding on to Tims comment on pacing it really was great. With how well made the side quests are and how they give more for Atreus to learn from and Kratos to have his own insight towards, it all feels connected almost like it was part of the main narrative.

so the son is loki. In norse mythology loki started out as a giant. Giants were the natural enemies of the gods. Loki essentially goes from being from the giants to helping the gods to then reverting back to hating the gods and bringing about the destruction of the gods. This plays nicely into kratos hatred for the gods. which is why i think in sequel thor comes (see the secret scene) takes "loki" and he turns to helping the gods. I think it will end with him turning on the gods and helping kratos again to bring about the end of the gods and unleash ragnarok. Also in norse mythology loki's parents are called farbauti (which means cruel striker which is fitting for kratos and could be how kratos is refered to by norse gods) and laufey (sounds like faye). She was also called nal. Nal meant needle which was because she was thin and weak looking. Similar to atreus/loki. So this whole thing kinda fits. A lot of what people think of norse mythology like loki being adopted by odin etc isnt part of the myths it comes from pop culture. For example if you type laufey into google you get the marvel frost giant leader come up who is male. Even though laufey was loki's mother.

James Vasa True. Another thing i see people missing out (probably) is that througout the adventure, Kratos tells Atreus to not make conclusions until you have the full story. And that kinda felt like writers directly telling that to the player. See, the game went out of its way to tell you that Odin is a prick, and Thor is an asshole. Supposedly irredeemable those two. Is it really that simple tho? Are the giants really that good, all of them? I doubt the story is gonna be as simple as that. And i doubt kratos is gonna go on a god killing rampage again, when the whole point of this game was to redeem Kratos.

Jose Luis Mendez Silva yh definitely, it could be a story where its evil vs evil or it could be a story where its not all as black and white as that and it could be gods or giants doing evil things with good intentions. Interesting to think about definitely. Also, the sequel could change through development and they may change where they want the story to go

The early secret that tells you almost everything I found on my second playthrough. Its during the first fight with baldur, there is a massive mural that shows the giant with a chisel in his head and a few other things. its the rock that kratos pushes onto baldur. If anyone starts it a second time try and look at the big rock whilst fighting baldur at the back of the house. I only found it after hearing Cory say there was a secret right at the beginning. its amazing that they put that in.

I’ve literally book marked this video for 5 years until finally beat this game. Father of 2 young kids, takes me forever to play anything. Maybe best game I’ve ever played. Worth the wait to play. Chills throughout. Glad I remembered this spoiler cast because have no one else to talk to about it. Amazing Cory. If there was one game I’d tell someone to play who has never played a video game before, this would be it. Best representation of gaming today. Best feeling combat, fantastic story, and graphics even in 2023 blew my mind. And being a father now it reached me on so many levels would have never understood years ago. Amazing. Thank you

God of War 2, Kratos dies 2/3 of the way in from Thor and you finish as Loki and take Thor down. God of War 3, Loki brings Kratos back from the dead to kill Odin and finish what they started, and after returns to his roots as his identity Atreus to live as the new God of War.

Watching this at the end of 2023 after playing GOW for the first time. I freaking LOVE this video. I appreciate this mans honesty and vulnerabilty so much, it is so very important. I find it strange that nearly every single reviewer or podcaster keeps saying that they didnt like the old GoW games.....pretty sure they were all received extremely well by the public and critics alike. Have a listen to a few other podcasts, nearly everyone says they weren't a fan of the previous games....weird.

Yea god of war 2 or 3 got a 10 on game informer and 1 and 2 got 9.8-9.7 respectively on ign. I don’t think you should be allowed to be a god of war fan, cause of his demons he has from the trilogy, if you haven’t played them. But it’s not the same time, and I suppose the funny crew don’t like boobs.

When Atreus brought the leaves wasn't it Mistletoe? I think very early on the Giant rock fighting with The Stranger, The Depiction on the rock was the same on the mural of Jotunheim. I think Atreus has the power of Zeus too, when he got ill the weather turns into a thunderstorm and the time he got mad at Sindri.

When kratos said I have to go home to be who he was before I literally thought we were going back to Sparta to get the blades. My jaw was on the floor so excited going back to Sparta. But even not going back to Sparta it was an amazing thing going back to where you burned your wife to ash and started your journey. It was an amazing scene.
