Yeah it might seem like Semantics but a snakes body is scientifically divided into 4 parts, head, neck, body, and tail. Where each part begins and ends depends on the snake and its anatomy. Random fun fact i learned a while back 🐍

Literally where I got my snake from. She has hella newly bread white mites. I genuinely cannot tell if those spots are mites or just her scale color though? I don’t know how serious it is at this point and it’s making me so sad. I really hope she’ll be okay… Today I went to petco to grab some stuff for my soon to be bioactive enclosure, and they literally had two ball pythons in literally a 10 gallon tank. I didn’t check for spots but seriously, not only was it 10 gallons but they were using aspen AND they had NO COVER AT ALL. It was awful.

I just purchased a BCI boa about 2 weeks ago. I had her on aspen but humidity was becoming a bit of an issue so I switched to coco husk substrate. Made a massive difference. She had her first meal in her new enclosure soon after. 2 days later (a week after changing substrate) I went to check on her as I had been doing daily. Unfortunately I saw mites.. clear as day. I had a wooden enclosure for her which I have since thrown out. She is now in a brand new glass enclosure a full floor away from where her old one was. I have been using this method daily. And only sparying the paper towels and snake every 3 days, I have also added in a dawn soap soak for her which I do while I clean the enclosure. So far I'm 4 days in and have noticed a drastic drop off in the amount of dead mites in the enclosure each day. I did find one on her this morning which I will get off when I do the cleaning. I'm hoping I can have this problem handled in another week or so as long as I keep up with the cleaning daily. I think I may be stressing her out with taking her out alot. But I feel it's worth it in the long run to not have her suffer. Anyway.. thanks for the tips on this. And hopefully my sweet linguini will be back to living a mite free life soon. 🤞

I used olive oil on my rat snake--just put a generous amount on my hands and let it slide through to rub it in. I then thoroughly cleaned the tank. He was fine after one treatment. But it wasn't like he had a lot of mites; I caught it early. We both had smooth skin afterward. :)

I got a cute little corn snake from petsmart recently because no one was buying it and I felt bad considering it's living conditions. Turns out it has mites and has now transfered those to my sweet ball python. I didn't figure it out till she started soaking in water for long period of time and she skipped a couple meals which she hasn't done before. So I take them and give them both a seperate thorough look over and my corn has a ton while my ball seems to just be getting them. Been stressing out about it big time and doing tons of research. Thanks for the video! Any and all tips will be welcomed 🙏

An alternative a friend of mine found was to basically give your snake an sunflower (I think) oil bath, after 5 minutes the mites would have suffocated. Although you do need to make sure to rub the oil into the snake's scales so every nook and cranny is covered. Then just give them a normal water bath to wash all the oil off and all the mite bodies will come out with the next shed or when you dry the snake off. Also instead of using chemicals you can just out everything in boiling water, if possible, to cook the mites inside the enclosure

Best thing I found was olive oil, you rub it all over the snake, it traps all the mites and makes all the smaller ones under the scales come up for air and get trapped as well. One of the best snake keepers I ever knew taught me this, you just have to soak them afterwards and its completely safe for them. after a few days of doing that, they were mite free. Also a good way to clean the cage that way too.

We got our Ball Python, Annabelle, about a week ago from Petsmart and I just noticed a few mites (only seen 2 total so far). In the cleaning process of this, would you put the snake in an isolation area such as a plastic container before cleaning them? Also, for any wood hides, would you recommend spraying them as well, or just completely disposing of them? I would like to get rid of the few mites we have as soon as possible so they don't get out of hand. Thanks in advance for your help! :)

For the tank I would suggest submerging it in the tub, for the lid crazy glue can cover up the screen lid gaps. I would also suggest getting aquarium silicone and going over the original silicone if the tank is old to cover any gaps from aging.

For burrowing species you could heat or freeze the substrate. I put my substrate in a rubber made bin then poured several large pots of boiling water over it. I let it sit until the water cooled, then did it again. If freezing, I'd freeze for at least 48 hrs.

In the past I treated my snakes for mites. But what about mites getting in the eyes? I lost all my snakes due to the fact that mites got in behind their eyes. I used spray but avoided the head. What can we do to fix this?

Just curious because I overthink everything. Would it okay if I use paper towel as substrate in the beginning when snake arrives in case if the snake does have mites? Also have you ever had incidents where your real substrate has mites? Obviously you would throw those away but I am just curious. Along with that, can I spray the paper towel and wipe the snake along with small parts for the cage? I feel like I may miss some spots while spraying these areas? I know this video is quite old but I am just curious since I am planning to have a snake with in a year or two and be educated as much as I can! Thanks!

Glad I was trolling old videos lol Yes, paper towel for new snakes is definitely okay! Its easier to clean when you're getting used to a routine for feeding/potty/shed. Also its easier to spot any bugs or health issues using paper towel. Spraying the tank with the mite killer he's using isn't a bad idea for a new snake, preventative measures and all, but I wouldn't necessarily bother spraying and washing the snake itself. If it has mites, they will show up on the paper towel after a few days, and then you'll know how to move forward with care or treatment. As for the substrate, it is possible for the bag to be contaminated with bugs or eggs prior to you buying it. I tried out a new substrate last summer that had coconut mulch to keep humidity up easier, and after about a week my poor little ball Miki was infested. Before I always used aspen shavings and never had a problem with bugs. (I've been keeping ball pythons since I was 15, I'm 22 now) I've seen people say you can bag the mulch and freeze it or microwave it to kill anything that might be crawling around, but personally I'd just rather not risk it. Also, if you're trying to find a reputable pet store or breeder, I'd look at morph market first. Its a website where breeders list snakes, and you can check on the credibility of said breeders. I just got my third baby ball from a breeder I met on there and he's super healthy and super cute! Best of luck with your future herps!

Hello- I am strongly considering adopting a Ball Python in the near future. I've never owned a snake before and so I have one question that no one seems to agree on. For the snake enclosure I have a rather large, approximately 40 gallon take ready to use and another smaller 30 gallon as well. They both have lids that are solid sliding lids at the top and neither are mesh/ screen. With this in mind, my question is, do these enclosures need solid lids to keep humidity in as some websites advise, or screens for air as others recommend? It would be rather easy to find a strong, "escape proof" screen lid to fit these tanks, but I need to know if that's necessary or even advised. please answer and thanks in advance to anyone who does -a very concerned first time potential reptile owner

Chance Doesn't matter I wouldn't get a screen top. theyre horrible all the humidity escapes but if you decide to get a screen top cover almost all of the screen with a damp towel and then put a dry towel over it. and just keep the damp towel wet. but remember to leave some of the screen exposed for ventilation

I just did this today! Does this work for wood mites too? There's no mites on my snake, but I noticed little mites in the enclosure and read they should be wood mites?

I have a fake rock hide an a wood hide that have holes an cracks in them, do u think if I soke them both in water mix with the mite spray an then bake then both in the oven for a bit, do u think it would help kill any mites in them so I don’t have to buy more hides?

I did not own snakes. I don't ever plan to own snakes. I rescued a hermit crab from a pet store with terrible conditions for him. Next to the enclosure was a snake enclosure, and inside it was a plastic critter keeper with a snake in it. I went to the shop again today to ask for some history on the hermit crab. I asked about the snake and they said it died of snake mites. I'm here because I had no idea what they were and wanted to know if they were preventable. What a way to find out that the poor guy died of their neglect. Thank you for posting this tutorial. I may send this to the shop for future reference.

Please reply....but can you use paper towel or newspaper for its everyday bedding is it safe? and do ball pythons need to burrow into something or is something that's not necessarily needed...?

My snake had mites when I bought him and and easy way to get rid of them it can take awhile but you take not poisious soap and put some in some warm water and soak the snake for about 1/2 hour and clean the cage everyday

Is it possible to use different enclosure or like a tub while you clean the enclosure they're originally in? So basically clean both the snake and its enclosure at the same time? Or just while he/she hanging about so they dont get hurt while you focus on cleaning the enclosure?
