In my current relationship of almost 3 years, we take turns pumping gas. It’s not really a “thing”. I don’t consider it a nuisance or an inconvenience; it’s just something people need to do. When it comes to chores, we split everything equally because we both take accountability for our home. My bf still plans special trips/dates for us, gets me flowers, etc. I also like doing sweet things for him. Even in heterosexual relationships, gendering certain acts of service seems weird to me because I personally am more comfortable when we’re supporting each other in similar ways.

My pov in regards to asking "how is your heart?" In many Muslim cultures this is the norm. When you want to ask someone how they’re doing, you ask: in Arabic, Kayf haal-ik? or, in Dari/Persian, Haal-e shomaa chetoreh? How is your "haal"? What is this haal that you inquire about? It is the transient state of one’s heart. In reality, we ask, How is your heart doing at this very moment, at this breath? When I ask, “How are you?” that is really what I want to know.

I blatantly asked him, “You’re not going to help your mom?” and he gets off the car, me expecting him to help her. Instead, he goes inside the gas station to buy himself a drink. Ummm I’ve been with this guy for 6 years, it’s been a conversation and I honestly don’t know if I’m making it a bigger red flag/turn off than it should be but I really don’t want to have to “train” a partner to be a gentleman. 🤢 I will say, he does do other things such as cooking food for me regularly, buys me coffee most mornings before I go to work (at the very least makes my coffee for me in the morning), helps me pack my lunch for work, washes my car, etc. So he definitely does not lack in the acts of service category, however I want ALL the chivalry 😭

I get the gas pumping as a nice thing to do for someone but expecting men to do that for women sounds like reinforcement of societal gender roles. Saying it's to protect their hair or keep their hands clean or whatever, sounds the same to me as when men think I can't carry heavy things at work purely based on my gender. Chivalry is a readiness to help the weak, not just women.
