I believe helping women go gray as soon as they start graying will do wonders for destroying the idea that women "lose" their beauty past their 30s. The more the world sees woman loving their gray hairs, the more women can be excited about growing older and enjoying their wisdom.

omg I remember at 23 my hairdresser found like 3 and I freaked out!! 😆😆 I think it would actually be amazing to have women of all ages running around with gray hair! We'd be like an army throwing that societal pressure to the wind, letting our natural selves be free. 😃

At the first Covid lockdown, my daughter suggested I stop dying my hair. No one was going anywhere, this was the time to do it. She assured me I would “rock the grey hair”. I went cold turkey. My hair is curly and the demarcation line was all over the place, but you know what? Total strangers’ comments were positive! They said it would look great when it was grown out, they liked the calico, the salt-and-pepper was going to be beautiful! Even my hairdresser sister offered to blend it if it drove me crazy, but she encouraged me to keep going and told it was awesome! Going cold turkey was the right way to go for me!

I too transitioned during COVID, but I love it now. The blue shampoo and hats were my friends during the transition, and I did cut my hair from long to a short bob. It took about 20 months to grow out and now I am letting it grow longer again. I see so many women going natural. It's beautiful.

Hello.... I just found your channel. I have a story. I let my hair go gray when I turned 50 that was 7 years again... it took 2 full years because I wanted to keep my hair long. I got 10000000 of compliments. But something happened to me right before I turned 58... I was going through a very hard mental health state, and I needed a change. So what can we change and see results immediately... yep you guessed it... our hair. I went to my friend who has been doing hair for years and at first she talked me into just adding more "pepper " lowlights in the salon world... I liked it.. Was ok with that for the next 8 weeks but still wasn't fully satisfied, so I asked for some red feathering... well!!! WORSE MISTAKE... it turned orange. See before all of the feathering and low lighting, my stylus had told me that my hair was so silky. So adding some red actually turned my hair orange. Needless to say we both just gasped. Without leaving the salon, I begged her to just color all of my hair. To cover up the orange. It was terrifying because my head was burning and she rinsed it out and took very good care of me. Needless to say my hair started falling out and chunks. So here I was just eight weeks earlier with beautiful natural salt and pepper hair that I got tired of. Remember, all the thousands of compliments that I received, I just got bored, with looking at my hair, the same way for the last 57 years. I colored my hair, it became dark brown with some red peeking through. And now my hair was falling out like crazy. I'm back to transitioning again. So what advice do I have for myself, when I feel that I need to change stop and think about how that change is going to affect my life. This has been life-changing for me on more levels than I can ever express. Quick fix does not always answer , our problems at the time. Now granted I am a person who is willing to go through the process again I am 58 and making a joke that when I turn 60 my hair will be back to its natural youthful like when I was in my 50s. If any of your viewers are reading this, or you even got this far, I just wanna say that I find it very encouraging to still continue to watch women who have allow themselves to embrace the gray. As I like to think of it, now, the knowledge, the wisdom, The beautiful gift that God has given me that I had just thrown away. I am not against coloring, I feel it is definitely a personal choice. Thank you for letting me share my story on your channel.

Same as Katie, I didn't want the upset of making too many changes at once, so cutting off all dyed hair was not an option. As a normally impatient person, this was an uncomfortable time for me, which obliged me to keep using color-deposting masks to minimize the demarcation. I remember checking every mirror and reflective surface constantly to see if I had a single millimeter of progress! What was a "stalling" phase was in the first few months where your hair has to grow "up and out" before being long enough to start growing "down"-- after this point was reached, the growth was faster and easier to spot. After about 1 year or so, the old dyed/brassy ends faded and the new growth had come in enough that it just... stopped mattering. By this time, no stylist wanted to profit from me by making a color correction, and told me to just leave it alone! So, unintentionally cold turkey.🦃🥶

as I write this, I have bright dark red hair. That with grey growing out is really ugly, like you can't afford any more dye. My hair has the lenght like yours in the vid. SO.... later today I will dye my hair dark brown and then I won't care anymore for the rest of my life. (I'm 70) Not sure how the brown will be in some time, but well, see about that when the time comes

Hi Katie, thanks for this video! I decided to stop coloring my very long (way below waistline) hair in July 2021. In December 2021, I went to a reputable hairdresser known for helping with color transitioning to discuss options to help keep me from looking too "unkempt" and, because my hair was in really good condition despite the regular home dye routine (thanks to an excellent product and my own hair care routine), we decided to lighten the very dark chocolate brown box dye color out of my hair to the extent possible, through a 2-step (over one week) clarifying process, and then use a combination of highlights in the remaining color and lowlights around the grown out gray area. This blended in the transition line considerably and is still surprisingly effective 18 months later. We cut my hair off to just at waistline level and I have been keeping it at about that length for now. My natural gray hair is now almost to my shoulders, with a lot of silver underneath in the back lengths and a surprising amount of natural brunette throughout the gray, mostly in the back, which indeed makes for interesting braiding. Of course, the difference is noticeable between the natural gray and what is now a medium coffee-colored brown (my hair had years of dye in it) with blended dark blonde highlights in the lower half but it's not that stark (to me, anyway) and it doesn't look too brassy. I've always had a natural red overtone in my natural brunette anyway so it works for me. I'll check out the shampoo you've recommended. Thanks again for the explanations and encouragement!

My dad had beautiful green eyes like yours. I always wished I got them too. I did get both parents' early grey genetics though, found my first when I was 12! Now I'm 30 and over a quarter of my long hair is grey. I don't dye it anymore, since 2016. It looks like tinsel to me when it glitters in the light, I'm sure that will change the more uniform it becomes. But I spent so many years watching my mom dye and pluck her greys and I thought it looked so pretty natural, but I could never convince her to let it go grey. So I'm quite excited to see how mine grows in.

I'm so excited to have found your channel. I'm 41 and 30% gray and I'm sick of covering it up. I think going natural at this point will be easier for me to go through my transformation now than waiting until I have more gray later on in life. I decided about 2 months ago to go gray, but my stylist recommended highlights. Although they are beautiful, they are more expensive than coloring. I'm done and ready to go cold turkey.

Just had a trim for the 1st time in a year. I had my hair colored a rose blonde and cut in a lob with bangs. BUT it was hard to maintain because I have curly hair. I just got tired of coloring it, too. I let it all grow out and now just have blonde at the bottom. It grew incredibly quickly and is nearing my chest. Just today I wanted to have all my blonde hair back and then I found you. I'm going to let it keep growing out and hopefully will have a nice salt and pepper color as it now appears from the 6 inch grow out. Plus, not have many emotional issues about it. I already do get some ageist comments from ignorant people. Mostly men and then a family member. (Who happens to be older than me with white hair.) Thanks for being here!

Early August of 2023 it will have been 3 years since I last coloured it. My hair grows very quickly. It has grown from approxitmately, from my armpit level to the top of my butt during this 3 years. Unfortunately, my gray hair is all underneath the top of my hair is all dark still. I leave my hair down and it is hard to tell that I have any gray! When I pull my hair back into a bun I have a dark streak down the centre of my head and most of the bun is dark! However, all around the sides and back are an absolute white shade of gray! My daughter wants to help me blend it in by stripping and bleaching small segments of my dark hair, then follow that with purple or blue toner to bring out the silver in order blend it all in for a graceful grow out of my gray!

I am just starting this journey and my hair is past my mid back. I decided to grow it long because I had short hair for nearly 2 decades, it looked good but when I was almost 40 I figured it might be my last chance to grow the mermaid hair I had been seeing and loving. Now that I have decided to embrace the gray I think having long hair may work in my favor since it seems the majority is underneath so it will be easy to cover it if I want to. I also have this lazy method of bleaching only parts of my hair before my bright colors so my natural color is almost chin length in parts already 😅 Im actually pretty excited to see whats been hiding under the dye since I haven't really seen my natural color since I was 14, Im 42 now 😅 I had super thick wavy hair when i was younger so Im hoping it will get back to that or better. I just know im tired of bleaching the few times a year I would and definitely tired of dyeing it. Its also physically demanding and as someone with 2 autoimmune diseases and chronic pain, doing my hair completely wipes me out for days after. Im really happy there are so many women embracing this process and making content so I feel good about it!

My hair was naturally dark auburn and I'd been doing the roots for years. When I thought about going grey I wasn't quite ready, so gradually dyed my roots a light blonde which means the skunk line isn't too noticeable. My hair is halfway down my back and short hair looks awful on me so I want to keep it. I stopped doing my roots 15 months ago and am surprised at how long it's taking. Think I've got a while to go yet! I cut a few inches off it every 6 months or so.

I’ve been going cold turkey for 38 months with no regrets. If I had cut my curly hair when the gray reached my shoulders it would have curled up at or above my ears. Plus, it grows out sideways like a mushroom top. The weight of long hair mellows out my hair. It was a choice between looking like Bozo the Clown or having multi-color hair. When my Facebook page got hacked, the one thing I didn’t miss was the polite hair trolls in the gray group. I get so many compliments from people, especially men. And I wrote the book, This Curly Woman Went Gray. Going gray cold turkey is a win-win.

I am nearly 63 and a few months ago I developed an allergy to hair dye. I got scabs on my scalp and the dye burned me. I left colouring my hair for 2 months and yesterday went to my hairdresser with a more natural hair dye which was supposed to be brown and my roots and Grey turned bright orange 😢. He put on brown dye over it to soften it but it looks awful. Last night I found your channel and I need to make the decision to stop dyeing my hair but it's so hard!

I’m so sorry to hear about everything that you’ve gone through! I have a friend who also developed scabs and had to go gray before she was ready. You can do this - and it will be so worth it in the end! I bet you’ll end up with beautiful, healthy silver hair. If you need some inspiration, check out, my blog for pictures of women who have gone gray - it helps!

I grew mine out for two years a few years ago then went back to dye. Now I am considering transitioning again! Do you know anyone who has used Clairol Age Beautiful Advanced Grey (it's a semi permanent color) as part of their slow transition? My hair is dyed black and my natural color is silver and dark blonde. I want to keep my length and the reason I am considering going grey is to grow my hair even longer (since the chemical dye keeps it from getting as long as it could).

Hi! No, I don't know anyone who has done that but I would advise you to be super careful with it - it's very difficult to transition using semi-permanent color. You might want to do a consult with Joli of QuickSilverHair.com - she has great advice and can give you other options that might help.

@@KatieGoesPlatinum thanks! I think I'll just use it on my ends to keep the length color fresh as my roots grow out. You are the best Katie! :)

Dear WyrdWitch: I know ymmv when it comes to dye products, but I was using Clairol Beautiful Collection Advanced Gray Solution (in different shades, mixed to get the one I wanted, plus adding Ardell Grey Magic to make it last) .before deciding to go grey. Due to their technology wherein the formula uses oxygen from the air to complete the chemical process that hydrogen peroxide normally would, the dye effects stayed in my hair permanently-- the color would wash out, but the brassy lightening remained until cut off. Strenuously recommend using color depositing masks and other non-cuticle-penetrating products for your transition!

I'm considering going gray for all.the reasons you state. I have long hair and dont want to cut it short. What happens if you have dyed red/blonde hair? How will that look? I was a natural red blonde

Usually dyed red and blonde hair is easier to grow than dyed brunette/black hair. You should see less of a skunk stripe - it usually blends better ♥️

I am 59 years old and recently had a systemic allergic reaction to hair dye. It was terrible hives and radish all over my body. My head would always be itchy after I had my hair dyed . Three months ago I had the reaction and I had been thinking about going gray. But should I get highlights and lowlights? I have little above shoulder length hair. I am definitely going gray… just don’t know if I should go cold Turkey or have some color highlighted in. My dyed hair is light brown, some blond and my real hair is dark brown with gray.

Hi, this is just my own personal opinion but I would be wary of doing any more chemical treatments on your hair right now due to your allergies. Hair dye allergies are serious! If I were you, I'd do the cold turkey transition but if that doesn't sound feasible to you, check out my recent video that offers alternatives for people who can no longer use hair dye: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqi0aJaEhbuEY5o Best of luck to you!

@@KatieGoesPlatinum Thank you! You are encouraging me . The lowlights and highlights probably would not touch my scalp but you never know I guess and the last reaction I had to go to the doctor and take steroids for a week and I was miserable. I will look at your video. I cancelled my hair color appointment for next week!

I can no longer afford to have my hair professionally dyed. I've dyed my hair the past 2 times myself with products from Sally's Beauty Supply. I would really love to let my gray/white grow out, but am worried about ut making me look older than I am.

You might be surprised - a lot of us find that the gray hair brightens our complexion and that makes us look younger (or at least our age) 🤗

It might make you look younger. My eyes pop more and my skin looks better because it isnt surrounded by yellow box dyed hair! My silver areas shimmer because they dont have a dye coat over them.

Thanks for referring me to this video, Katie! So informative and I enjoyed hearing the do’s & don’t you went through. I’m already changing my attitude about it and don’t care what people think. My father in law called me gray & pretty at Christmas Eve dinner so that was bonus. 🦨 Mahalo from Nebraska…
