I had this idea of going gray that I did not see in your video. I would like your thoughts on it. I have colored my hair for almost 30 years. My gray hair does grow fast. I was thinking of continuing coloring it with a semi permanent color that washes out. I was thinking to do that, until my demarcation line reached my chin, and then washing the semi permanent out to see what my actual hair looks like. Supposedly, semi permanent hair color washes out in "28 washing's". For me, it washes out much faster. But I haven't used it for quite a few years. Could you tell me your thoughts on this method? I will be using natural instincts hair color by Clairol, I believe
@KatieGoesPlatinum Жыл бұрын
@@bres143 I'm afraid that doesn't work very well - unfortunately, any dye that has the word "permanent" in it will permanently stain your hair and you will have to grow it out (it won't wash out, no matter what they say). I used semi-permanent dye on my hair when I was dyeing, and believe me, that didn't make my transition any easier - still took me a long time to grow out. Instead, if you don't want to deal with a skunk stripe, watch this video for some alternative solutions - hope that helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqi0aJaEhbuEY5o

Its so strange to me now I am a year in to growing out from blonde to grey,if you're an older male going grey you're George Cluney,if you are female you are letting yourself go. This attitude needs to be challenged. Why so much pressure to dye our hair? Noone has said anything but no doubt my grey hair with blonde streaks is getting tongues wagging. Which sais more about them than it does about me. I have discovered my eyes look bluer with grey hair,and I can wear stronger lipstick colours,so I am enjoying trying out new things.

I think women are the worse critics when other women want to go completely grey. women complain that their female friends where the worse ,and the least supportive when they decided to go completely grey. Society also plays a role in this as well. I believe mostly females men not so much.🤔 its so contradictory when there was a trend for grey hair dye catering to younger women as a fashion statement all to make a profit consumerism at its best!! But its wrong when we decide to go naturally grey later in life. Make it make sense!!! Do what makes you happy forget about all the negative critics!!!

Very informative video. A lot of information I could have used during my transition. I was a dark brunette. I transitioned back in 2020 and I just decided to go cold turkey, with the whole demarcation line and all. But a quarter of the way I discovered a color depositing conditioner that was a game changer for me (Overtone). I used the Extreme Silver color and the new growth turned a beautiful dark silver and I also noticed that the brassiness on my old, faded hair was dramatically toned down. Although the demarcation line was still there, it appeared to blend in better. As the hair grew I just continued cutting the tips and my hair has never felt healthier. The color is temporary and does fade away. That's was how I managed to go through my awkward stage. I still use the product and I bounced back from Extreme Silver to vibrant silver just to give highlights to my white hair. I hope this tip can help someone out there.

I'm going cold turkey. It's kinda fun, actually. Very calico. Cold turkey shows that you don't care what others think, and you could possibly give others inspiration to do the same. Just be stylish about it. If you curl your hair or do beachy waves, the demarcation doesn't show up as much. 😊

I quit coloring my hair with henna about four years ago, because while my hair was about 20% gray, the roots were showing so fast that I couldn’t keep up with them. My husband trims my elbow length hair, and he applied the henna for me, it was messy and time consuming. He was telling me that I should just go silver and embrace the color. Of course he was already fully silver, and he looks great with it. So I did not have to deal with being told I needed to keep coloring my hair. So I would definitely recommend that when the silver strands come in, but to not fight it with putting toxic chemicals on your head. And honestly most of the hair color looks unnatural and monotone, like cheap plastic wig hair. So I think going silver early is the best option so you are not dealing with such a drastic change.

A big life change inspired me to stop the dye in 2018, and I'm soooooo happy I did! My hair was dry and drab for years and I got so tired of the chemicals and mess and feeling "not put together" when my hair started to sparkle. Where did that idea even come from?! The stripe was not my favorite for the first two months, but after that it got better and better and I never looked back. I had fun twisting it back and with braids, headbands, and ponytails. I did some blonde highlights and cut it to my chin, and then grew it back long. It makes wearing eyeliner more fun, and even the colors you opt for evolve (I used to wear mostly gray!). Mostly I felt more ME, and it was a really cool science experiment. Katie was a HUGE inspiration through the whole process, and for better or worse, it IS easier and more fun challenging a norm if you have support and encouragement!

I have very long hair and dark brunette. I am also in the public eye. So I let my roots grow out a couple inches, then I took demi perm (brunette) color and painted it in small streaks at the roots, leaving most of the siliver, I then had extensions made for me in a combo of brunette and silver hair. That way instead of looking like I was letting myself go, it looked intentional and I can't say how many compliments I have received. I now only have about 3 inches left of the dark box color left. Almost there.

Right now I'm in a stage where I am coloring the white parts with lighter brown hair dye, so it gives a highlighted sort of effect. Coloring my hair today I parted it an noticed quite a bit of silvery threads so I'm not going to be able to hide it much longer. I paused the video and think the easiest way to go gray is to buy gray hair color and color it all over. I'm just lightening my hair in stages at this point. Decided to go gray a few months ago and was doing it cold turkey. The golden blonde was quite brassy so the salt and pepper gray looked dramatically different from the brassy blonde. I decided to continue with the process of cold turkey but first I dyed it one last time using Nice 'n Easy Soft Silver to lessen the dramatic difference between the gray and the blonde. I died my hair purple in 2016 or 17 till July 2020 after being called my hubbys mother 3 times in 6 months. My natural brunette hair was going grey at that time and was around the 20% ish point. It was the point where the greying makes us look old. Then, in Jamuary 2021, I was just done with dying, and my roots were showing closer to the 40% to 50% grey. That, to me, is the beautiful phase. I got some purple shampoo, which dulled the red in the purple dye and brought out the greys and whites. Also it dulled or blended the demarcation line enough to make is less shocking and more intentional. Now, one thing i had to consider is that I have waist length hair that hubby adored, thus limiting the greying options to only the grow out method. I'm now about to turn 54 in 18 days or so, and this next haircut will remove the last 3 inches of the purple, leaving my length mid back around bra strap long. My hair is now close to 60% grey and beautiful. I'm in love with jt because i now have highlights and lowlights in what to me was just boring brown. It might have taken 3.5 years to grow out, but it has been fun. One thing that was weird is that the texture changed. I now have some waves and curlishes when before greying, it was all line straight. The best advice i can tell others is to just take the plunge. My cousin, who is 10 years older than me, loved my hair and wishes she'd done it earlier with hers.

If you are on the fence about going grey, I highly recommend starting with a grey/silver wig. I bought one (under $100), a few months before I decided it was time. Most of the time I wore it at home, and I got used to how I would look, what makeup adjustments to make, etc. I went the full silver with lowlights salon method, my new silver growth blended perfectly. Finding the right colorist is a must, as mentioned in the video. Also, make sure they use Olaplex with the bleach products if you go this route. I first went for a cut and color consult. I felt so comfortable on that appt., I scheduled the big one. I didn’t have to return for multiple color treatments, but I continued to go for occasional cuts.

This is the best video I’ve seen. I got tired of the calico look, due to being allergic to dies. I finally cut off 2-3 inches off into a very short Pixie. I loved it 😊 - unfortunately going to a family reunion, the young people categorized me with my aunts and not my cousins. 😢

Hi Katie! Does your gray hair feel healthier than when it was dyed? Also, did you start wearing different colors when you transitioned to gray?
@KatieGoesPlatinum Жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes - it’s a LOT healthier: Thicker, smoother, shinier, and a lot less frizz. And re: colors - i went back to wearing the cool colors i used to wear with my natural dark hair. It turned out the colors i wore with dyed hair were too warm.

I'm doing it the cheap, natural way, as the dyes really bother my scalp! have blond highlights, with medium golden brown dye for rest of head, except for the 4 months of grey I now have so it is quite the 'calico' cat look. Luckily, my hair is still thick at 67:) It will definitely be a process & hoping will have a good amount of grey to get cut into medium length style for class reunion next summer! Wish me luck!!

I have been coloring my hair for more than 30 years. Basically since college. My natural color is a dark ash and I have been dying it red. I have thought about going gray. My Mom had the most beautiful silver hair when she was older. I am reluctant right now to let my hair go natural b/c I don't have that much gray in my hair yet. So far it is just a little bit mixed in my hair. (I can see it when my roots get too long) When I do go gray I will probably have my hair colored a lighter tone of my natural dark ash blond or maybe do a fun quirky color.

I am currently going grey. The journey began...cold turkey. I didn't like the grey/brunette line, so visited the salon for a dramatic colour removal and tone. I now am managing my colour using purple shampoos and conditioner. I will continue...cold Turkey for as long as possible. I tie my hair up in a ponytail. My hair grows slowly 🐌. I like your suggestions of bright coloured ends, I might give it a try.🎉

I am in the process of brunette color removal after 38 yrs of coloring my hair. First attempt left my hair (which is mostly white with gray) a light blond at the demarcation line and below. I’m going to have the rest lifted in a few days. I was wondering if your experience was the same and if it lifted all the color? My hairdresser didn’t exactly listen to my wanting the hair above and below the line to match and kept saying “blonde”. I have never been blonde and didn’t want that. She was impressed that it lifted 3-4 levels on the first go. I also wanted to know about your toner because the one she used made my white hair look lilac color which I hated.

So I have been using temp dyes, but it doesn't seem to wash out. Is there a brand you recommend?
@KatieGoesPlatinumАй бұрын
When you say temp dyes, do you mind like dyes that are supposed to wash out, or semi-permanent dyes? Becuase semi-permanent will definitely stain your grays. But Arctic Fox, Manic Panic and Shine Drops are supposed to be safe to use on gray hair. The only ones i've tried are Manic Panic, which works well, and Shrine - which didn't work as well. But both washed out after a few days. Definitely do a test strip just in case!

I originally started with the strip method, but it was tricky doing it myself so after one time,I just went cold turkey. I have wide white stripes on each side and had to color every 2 weeks. It was very empowering to just grow it out in front of the world.💪

I transitioned via the highlight/lowlights/foil method. It was expensive, and there was a brief period-like maybe a couple of weeks between my first and second treatments-where things didn’t look that great. After my second treatment, however, I was delighted with how I looked and how easy the rest of the process went. I used a platinum toner for a while, and when I decided to drop the toning and just let the gray take over, I barely noticed a change. That said, I think the buzz cut or cold turkey methods are the best, but I knew I’d never be able to look at myself in the mirror for all the months it would take to reach my length h and color objectives..

I'm so glad the highlights/lowlights method worked well for you. My feeling is, whatever works for YOU, is the best way to go gray. For me , it was cold turkey - for my Mom, it was a salon transition - and for my sister, it was the dye strip technique. :-)

I really love the silver/white color. I have never thought of gray hair as being a bad thing. I’m a natural strawberry blonde, but I’ve had it several different colors depending on the photo shoot and company. Since I’m in a business where my hair is professionally colored, I will probably let my hair grow out gray or have it stripped and colored gray. I That’s usually harsh on your hair, but my hair is just above my bum and I really don’t want to cut it because I really like being able to braid my hair or pulling it up in a pony tail. Low maintenance is definitely important. Good luck and Happy Gray!

i just decided to go gray. Primary reason, is I am having hair loss in the front of my hair. I've had my hair cut and stopped dying. is there a faster way to remove the dye?
@KatieGoesPlatinum16 күн бұрын
Hi, I wouldn't try to remove it faster if you have dark hair (like you do in the photo) - I did that, and ended up with a head full of orange hair (I clarified my hair frequently and it faded the dye but just turned it orange). Your real color isn't hiding under the dye - it's been permanently altered, unfortunately. I hope you find that stopping the dye stops your hair loss - that's what happened to me and I'm THRILLED.

How I transitioned .I had lower shoulder length. I can't say i was "grey" because my black hair is very black and my white is very white. So ill call it salt and pepper. I bleached and toned it. It took me 7 days to get it a pale yellow. Bleached one day, Recuperate the next. Then again. 3x in 7 days. Then I semi dye it , no ammonia, no developers in the color grey. The down sides: patients you must have lol! Semi dyes fade fast. So be willing to color often. The good thing about is, its like a deep mask or continioner. No mixing its just deposit the color. I did trim my hair more often them usual due to the damage the bleach caused on my ends and to promote hair growth. By the end i hap top shoulder length. I was ok with that. I did not re touched my new growth only with semi grey dye, to easy a blend. And just grew it out. Now I have no bleached or processed hair dyes. I do get board at times with my natural (now) grey hair. So what I do is I'll semi dye it in a deep purple a dark navy blue and it eventually fades in a lavender grey or a blueish grey. Until it's all grey again. Ty for your tips. 🍒

My mother was upset that her daughter had grey hair when she still has very little and paid for me to have my color done. Having a buzz and pixie and growing it out is not something I want to do again, so the dye strip sounds the best if I can do it.

I am just at the beginning of embracing my gray after dyeing my hair for 40+ years. I've gone nearly a year without the dye and I love the look of the gray in the front but not so sure about the back. It seems darker gray, but still kind of pretty. I think the only thing I'm concerned about is that my hair seems thinner than when it was a light/med brunette. I notice my scalp more. Might be just me. Right now I'm doing the cold turkey but my daughter is getting married in about 6 months and I want to look my best. Definitely planning a trip to my hair dresser soon.
@KatieGoesPlatinum5 ай бұрын
Hi, Kathy! If it makes you feel better, a lot of us experience what i call the "baldness" illusion when we first go gray - where we notice our scalp more. I think it's an optical illusion as it seems to go away once the last of the dye is cut off. Here's a product i just discovered that can help fix that issue - it blends your hair with your scalp. The white version is best if your roots are white, but they also have a salt & pepper version: shrsl.com/4m13m Congratulations on your daughter's upcoming wedding! A lot of women who are transitioning cold turkey but have a big event will use root spray, wigs, or gray toppers to disguise their roots. Hope that helps!
