True. But they're only dropping $99 at the time, and they'll upgrade to the next iTrash model in a few years (for another $99)... When you have to pull $10k out of your pocket for a solar system, you'll do your homework!

yea sure, 99$ for the first bill, then you pay off the entire phone through a 3-5year ocntract. Or. Pay the upfront bill and don't pay your power bill for another 75 years.

In California we now have an $8.00 penalty per month for having solar. Plus $10.00 to keep the dam Smart meter off your house. Ultimately solar homes must go off grid. The grid will always control your costs.

I like the way PNM does it here in New Mexico. I've had my 3.6 KW ground mount system since May of 2010. Every bill has been zero. PNM lets us apply our surplus against the monthly fees, and taxes so we can have a true zero bill. And we can bank our excess all the months we don't use the AC. This year when AC season started around June 1, I had 2400 KW in the bank. Good thing too, because I use most of that up during the summer and into the fall. They send a check for the surplus every month, and it averages $75. Going solar was maybe the best investment I've ever made. My system has a payback of around 7 1/2 years. In dry, dusty NM, the power difference between clean and not so clean panels is not apparent. (I'm reading the negative's below, and answering to the not very informed folks.) I wish I had gotten an even larger system. Future plans are to add a heat pump hot water heater, and eventually an EV. I generate a surplus now, but what I have won't cover the future plans. I have 16 EnPhase mico inverters with my 16 panels. If a cloud partially shades my panels, only that panel, or panels suffer. With one inverter, the whole system goes down to the lowest producing panel. Yes I have 16 chances for a failure, but if so, the rest keep on working. Mine averages 21-23 KW per day. FYI, 2300 sq ft ranch, propane hot water and furnace, rest is electric.

My brother bought a system straight out for his new 3500 sq ft house. His electric bill went for an average $300-$500 a month to his first year a $150 to the 3rd year a $335 bill for the entire year. His will "pay for itself" in about 6 years. When the wife and I buy our new "forever" home, we plan on buying a system even if the incentives have expired. It's still worth it to me!

In Belgium, if we put more on the electric grid than we consume a year, we need to pay the energy company money. So we're giving them money AND power! Kinda ridiculous. That's why people consume much more power before they get billed so they don't need to pay anything (if they produced more power than they needed). I've heard stories about people running an electric furnace outside.

Having solar panels and electric car is like throwing up two middle fingers; one to the oil companies and one to the electric utility. love it.
@yarpos
@yarpos 7 жыл бұрын
Oil companies couldnt care less really. A small % of their product goes to car fuel. Even if the one billion plus world car fleet converted by magic today they would still have a massive petrochemical/transport/military business to support. In some ways having a high % of solar is like giving yourself the finger as you are only driving up overall costs.

What about when it is a cloudy day for 2 weeks straight u are screwed if u are fully relying on solar. that is where a battery to store the power is so key. my biggest question wth this video is how much power electricity does this guy use. not only just the # of Kph, but what appliances and things he uses in his house. does he have a ton of light in a marijuana grow room,leaves the AC and lights on all day?

Well a LOT of people can afford it, probably 25 - 30 % of people at LEAST. If a good portion of them purchased then that would drive down the price so that others could, and so on. The top 25% are responsible for the bottom 75% being able to purchase most of the things that they do, it's just how it works. And the top 2% finance the research and initial manufacturing of the stuff the top 25% purchases. Of course the bottow 25% believe everything should be free and equally distributed and tons of government programs because they paid 8k in taxes last year, ignore the fact that they got half of it back LMAO

I am a realtor in PA. Solar panels definitely add value to a home, just like a gas well due to the cost savings. Not all buyers will like them, but most will. If someone is comparing two homes, both $1000/mo for mortgage, and the solar saves you $50/month, the solar home is essentially 5% cheaper. And keep in mind, lots of us want solar but don't have the upfront cash. Buying a home with solar already installed is a way you can finance that cost.
@sailingsolar

You need to get those trees that are shading your roof cut back. Panels even partially shading will suffer greatly compared to what they can put out in full sun.
@yarpos
@yarpos 7 жыл бұрын
Not so if you are using microinvertors, the power is converted at each panel to AC and the effect of shading one or a few panels becomes more linear than the standard one invertor approach.

Of course that's more of a theoretical maximum rather than a real world likelihood. In the real world, people are already willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars for the convenience of having what amounts to a large suit case waiting to take them wherever they want to go. With a borrowed car, you have to carry everything on your person instead, and that gets overlooked a lot but it's a very real phenomenon. Not that many people keep absolutely nothing in their cars at all times.

well I don't really know how we use that much... but I Live in the Caribbean we are 5 people in this household its a big house but we only us ac in the bedrooms sometimes in the living room in my estimates we use around 60kw to 80kw a night on ac only and on top of that the cost per kw in supper high around $0.25 to $0.30 we have an electricity monopoly in this Island there's only one electrical company here. Also you know that benefit that normal companies give you that the cost at night is less then the cost during the day well yeah we don't have that So yeah we are looking into solar for our house we would need a 17kw to 20 kw system :/ Also we have solar power hot water system and a gas dryer but we don't have a gas stove or oven

Even with good insulation, in a hot(95+) humid(80+) climate(central Fl,USA), the air conditioner runs at least 12 hours a day. We used to use at peak around 4MWh a month. After replacing the air conditioner, all the duct work, and blowing the attic full of insulation, that dropped to around 2MWh. And yeah, I have a small house.

Jason Andrade Exactly. I would have to look at a form 1040 and see the specifics. But if you install a $20000 system for tax credit would be $6000. If you have a couple kids make less then $75000 then you won't get anything in that credit.

I wanted solar panels on my roof. I reconsidered since most roofers won't replace your roof if you have solar panels on it. They simply don't want the liability if panels get damaged during removal. Unfortunately the roofers who are willing to remove the panels to replace your roof will charge a hefty price. I will consider using solar panels as a roof over my deck or patio. This way I don't have to worry about replacing a roof.

In my area, you can't install solar without special permits. Permits for which the local P.U.D. (power company) is the only entity allowed to issue licenses. A co-worker has been waiting over 9 months for them to come and inspect his proposed installation on his house; and there's no word when or if they'll ever actually inspect it. And, why would they? They're being asked to license themselves out of existence.

Great video, awesome PV, but one thing i worry about is the numbers on the meter. in 1 month the system produces around 900kWh(thats ok) but only gave 26kWh to the grid and bought 2kWh from the grid? how is that possible? That is unbelieveable good for a system without a batterystorage(even with batterystorage it's unbelieveable) and i can't believe the Energy u're using is 99% of the time exact what what the panels are giving to u.

Producing around 31kWh a day and a MAX of only 39kWh seems pretty low for the tail end of summer with a 12KW system as stated. For reference my 7.2KW system running on a 5KW inverter (to meet FIT regulations) averages around 30kWh a day in summer and its max is 45kWh in a day. Location obviously has a large impact but in South Carolina I would expect a lot better than he is getting.

The reason it doesn't get embraced by more people as he mentions, is that state and local utility companies constantly try to devalue solar and propose policy that will negate the cost-effectiveness of solar.

I don't get the hate about the rebates or the nonsense about time to break even when the simple math was in the video. Does nobody understand the % of subsidies that are calculated out every time you fill up at the pump, or buy propane / oil for your home heat? In some areas, you have the electric providers offering huge incentives (not state or fed) in you having solar on your property. Think about why that is for a moment. The power grid and customer pay model currently in place has seen very little change in the past several decades. Our power needs will only continue to grow, irregardless on your position on electric cars or where they will be 5,10,20 years from now. That in itself could be a huge increase in demand as their numbers increase. There are already rolling blackouts in areas during peak use and people are seeing soaring price increases due to demand vs capacity. They NEED alternate sources to help feed the grid, or at least offset the load during peak use. Solar is not the only answer, but its easy to see (especially with their efficiency getting better year over year) how its also in their interest and future growth model to sell / lease / or contract out solar to their own customers. Increase grid capacity, less cost in maintenance and growth in centralized infrastructure locations, etc etc etc. We need adoption into solar, and the incentives are for that reason. The push now creates needed growth in a market that would be stagnant otherwise, when we need that push to bring the next generation of products to even more homes and for even cheaper costs. I'd love to be off-grid. But I'd also wouldn't mind having a system big enough on my property to not only feed our needs, but pump back into the grid to help offset the cost even further, and put credit onto the monthly bill for once.

The reason for why people hesitate to buy into solar is because of the upfront costs. Not very many people have that kind of money and since most home owners on average stay in a home for about 15 years anyway, it's simply too big a risk. Leasing a system will actually depreciate the value of your home and may making selling more complicated. Buying does makes sense, however, but only if you plan on staying in your home for 15 years or more. Hope that helps.

I can never work out why, if the sun and the wind are "free" and renewables are cheaper and drive costs down, do we have to pay more for them if we want to use green power from suppliers?

I have a five bed house. Over the last three months I used £85 of electricity. (My house is fairly emery efficient) That equates to £340 for the year. I looked at the Tesla Powerwall 2, their web page recommended 4 powerwall 2 panels. Cost $22,000! Or roughly 44 years to cover its cost. Sadly these battery packs don't last half that time. Which brings me to the output, they're a bit vague about that. Reading between the lines Tesla seem to be limiting the output to preserve the battery life. They offer a 10 year guarantee based on their battery output levels. Is the output enough when you put on the kettle, washing machine, oven etc?No, not even half the necessary output on my calculations. When Tesla and other companies are able to offer systems with double the output, double the battery life at half the cost they may have a "goer". We're not there just yet sadly.

The main problem with solar is the initial expense. If you can afford a roof covered with solar panels AND a Model X, you have LOADS more money than most people. Also, you have to have a high tax bill (make a lot of money) to get take advantage of the full tax credit. The average person in the USA simply CANNOT afford to lay out that much money up front.

How old is your roof? What about the roof replacement cost now? The quality of the US houses are “legendary” as we all know that and first question I’m hearing from insurance company is how old is your roof? I’m very interested in quality of the installations as well, one unsealed drill whole and you have a leak adding costs of paintings etc - no one is talking about that risk...

I live in Florida and i a seriously looking into Solar, the one question i have is, what is he powering with the 12kw system? I want to install a system that is completely Independent of the grid, and with a 3500 sqft house i am estimating about 14-16kw with a battery back up. That is with one AC unit, Hot water heater, and refrigerator which are all energy star. These i guess would be the main power consumer. With the rebates in Florida, out of pocket expenses is estimated at about 20k.

I want to do this, but hate all the requirements of certified installers and their fees. I would rather DIY and have a system that would be off grid. Would still need a stand by generator and would want multi-fuel power for it. As long as the power companies and their lobbyist have the strength they will make life miserable for people who try to get away. Would like to try a Tesla power wall, but only sold through certified installers so forget that.

Save on fees by going off grid. Propane backup in the winter is a good option. Also some energy companies offer off-peak lower rates, charge your car after 1am, etc. Wanted to see more of the Telsa battery and off-grid. Not so interested in someone's newly installed panels. Show someone who has had panels for over a decade and what the upkeep is like, ie owner washing off panels or replacing them. I'll search your channel for more info. Thanks!

They said that and you believe it? That is exactly my point. I do not believe what they say. I believe what I see. Apparently you have never seen 25yo solar cells. Solar cells get dirty. Dirt on the cells will drop output over 30%. You have to clean them annually if you want anywhere near 95% output. BTW I searched the channel. It's just a huge OMG I have a Tesla X parade. I'm going to go geek out somewhere else. Cool channel though!
