The Japanese dialogue from Goku was actually something like, “if you can get even bigger, then I would have a real problem”, that’s when piccolo decided to get even bigger. So it was actually goku who lured piccolo to got bigger.

And he did take it like a champ. Even had a nice goodbye with Gohan, and Kami had a nice goodbye with Popo because of that too. He's just built different.

Yeah, if Piccolo had managed to survive Nappa's attack, that giant form would've come in real handy, when Vegeta transformed. Vegeta would've still been much stronger, mind you (even with all the damage he had taken, and the energy he lost transforming), but Piccolo might've been able to hold him off long enough for Goku to hit him with a fully charged Spirit Bomb.

Piccolo doesn't use the giant form unless he really has to as the last time he use was the garlic jr saga and super hero. Opponents that piccolo had fought could easily take on his giant form and Dr Gero has data on it, not to mention it wouldn't be a match to slug's giant form and Vegeta great ape
