In the past year I've went from rounds in the 110 range to now consistently playing in the 80's and broke 80 with a 79 for the first time last week. All possible from lots of practice time and applying what I've learned watching your videos from short game, which I lean on, to course management and attitude. I have turned down invites in the past to play because I felt I would embarrass myself but now I'll play with anyone that wants to play and own my game. WAY OF THE PLAYA! I'm 52 and for the first time I'm loving the game. You're doing a great service to the game. Thanks.

@Brian Ice Long holes only mean something because we attach out PGA Tour delusions onto them. A lot of golfers cannot reach the 430 yard par 4 in two and that's fine. CHances are that handicap stroke index is probably between 1 and 9 on that hole. 99% of golfers will have a stroke on that hole. Play it like a 430 yard par 5. Get on in 3, get the bogey, have a chance at the par and GTFO. Intimidation from lengthy holes is just because of this weird word "par" meaning as much to as as it does to a professional. It's crazy!

@eric what do you use off the tee typically? just curious, as i know most strokes saved/lost are from ~120 and in. but it is nice being on or just off the green in regulation sounds like we are similar scoring wise, but i've barely sniffed 79 (shot 80/81 maybe twice in my life)

Had major back surgery in 2017. Been fighting my way back to playing good golf. Haven't been able to consistently hit my driver good since. I started watching your videos and decided to hit my 3 wood off the tee which i hit long and straight consistently and change my approach to greens leaving myself the distance to hit my best clubs. Last time out had a missed eagle putt on the lip and 2 birdies. Hit your best club is such a smart idea. Thanks!

5:36 .. yes, i agree with this statement.. my club has a driving range with mats/artificial turf, as well as a real grass driving range (about 5 minutes walking distance away from the main driving range).. most people practice off the mats, as it's so much closer and has screens showing the distances, and i had become quite good with my irons there, but whenever i got on the course, i just couldn't perform the same type of shot anymore.. so recently i switched to always taking the long walk to the back of the practice area to get to the real grass range, and since then my ball hitting has been much more consistent. i think the mats or artificial turf is too forgiving

Hitting driver off those rubber tees, to me is a total waste of time. I hit the thing a certain way to actually get the thing to fly properly, then hit the course and the ball goes sideways. I refuse to his driver off them and the best is to stick a tee inside the rubber mat or get one of those tees you can stick into the turf with spikes

Great video Matt. Really like the transition to a more teaching style of video. In your description you say “buy a new putter to never 3-putt”. Imo 3 putts can happen to the best of us - we just need to let it happen and move on. Love your comments about the tee shot - I totally agree and as an example on almost every par5 I don’t want to attempt to reach in two I use my 3i to stay out of the fairway bunkers then lay up. Regards from Germany.

Hey playa. Since this channel is in large part about lowering scores, and it's really one of the best out there, what was the thinking on the 4th hole when the tee shot went in the water? Why take 3 from the tee instead of dropping where the ball entered the hazard? I recall you doing this a time or two and questioned whether it was strategy or just fun. It seems like a video opportunity to explain when to drop and when to rehit, if there ever is a good time. Thanks for the awesome work.

I've actually taken clubs out the bag (3 wood and even hybrid) until I can master them properly off the course. That way when I've duffed my tee shot on the par 5 to 180 and I still have 300 to go I don't then pull out the 3 wood only to top it etc etc. I hit a solid 6 and then maybe an 8 and chip on. Job done. Love this channel a lot. WADDAPLAYA

Well played J-Mac, nice round. To Matt's point at the 7:10 mark, today was the day that the 80 threshold was broken (shooting mid 90's 1 month ago). Smart irons off the tee on difficult holes, 4 up and down par saves, 1 up and down bogey, and NOTHING over bogey. My biggest take away from Matt is that par is a good score. Actually for high handi-cappers par is a great score. To that end, the goal on all putts outside 10 feet is to get within 3 feet. Sure, birdie is appealing but going for birdie and leaving 6 feet short of 8 feet long is high stress. Going for par and getting it within 3 feet is easy peasy. So thanks again Matt and once more well played J-Mac

They always want to change your swing one way or another. Yeah, that may help some. I believe face to path is most important what what ever works for the player is OK.( i.e. Didi). The big takeaway for me from Matt is, course management based on what clubs you hit best. Course management=stress free! Oh, yeah, my partner and I won our flight in a very large tournament this weekend! We were eliminated in first round of alternate shot playoff but no matter. I got crap about for about 6 holes and then the guys with drivers were sweating hitting as many fairways. I am leaking strokes bad on the green or I could shoot an 85. @@GolfSidekick I'm less of the opinion that cheap putters perform worse and more that I simply prefer to have a sense of personal investment in the club I use the most. Humanity is good enough at forging metal nowadays that even the cheap putters are reliable enough to use but for myself I just wanted a connection to the club specifically. Not some huge improvement compared to any other putters or the knowledge that I've just spent thousands of dollars on a bit of metal, just something about the putter that can let me have some form of connection with it so that I enjoy using it.

Forget the plan to become "less than 20 handicap" - too vague, will make you play poefies. Commit to hitting the stress free shot at all times Commit to playing par 90 golf courses by adding one shot to each hole Commit to improving the areas you can get some quick wins Commit to adding shots to your arsenal at the range and practice green and using them when ready Commit to the processes and you will actually forget this vague goal and report to me later this year that you're playing off a 14. DAMN!! Waddaday!
@cdh79
@cdh79 5 жыл бұрын
@@GolfSidekick Waddamotivationalspeech! This made me realise that dropping the handicap will come by itself and is actually just a side-effect. Some of what you mentioned I have already started putting into practice (practising more shot-shaping on the range and spending more time in the bunkers again) and i did register to a green reading-course which hopefully helps me eliminate those last 3-puts that still come up. Your advice to look at the hole during practice swings with the putter has tremendously improved my "getting within 3 feet" situation already, but there's still room for improvement. And this week i have to play with someone else's set of clubs twice (i'm on vacation to visit my family in Austria), so i will get my ego out of the play and leave the driver in the car completely to not be tempted to use one that i'm not at all familiar with. Different irons and an unknown putter make things difficult enough :)

Definitely depends on what you're comfortable with. I cant do without my driver, it's the best club in my bag. I'm not great with 3 wood, 5 wood, hybrid, or 5 iron. 6 iron down I'm dead solid. And my short game is what I work most at. So if I can keep my second shots into par 4s at a 6 iron or less, I have a good chance at par or better with bogey at the worst (mostly lol). I also know guys that would rather hit 3 iron than hit 8 iron. It's just that different people are more suited for different clubs.

Of course. That is the name of the game. Play your way. Whatever is the best shots and most comfortable shots in your bag. Planning your tee shot to finish where you feel best for an approach is the business.

5:32 you're right man even if we hit a chunk on the range mats the ball will have straight and good flight but if you do that on the course you're doomed. We keep hitting the ball heavy in the range and don't even know about it and get used to it. This is the reason why I don't go to the range which has mats before a tournament or normal round , I only chip or putt!

I played golf from the age of 18 until my early 50's without carrying a driver in the bag!! Don't listen to anyone that tells you what clubs you _"should"_ be carrying, you carry what works for you and your game. Confidence behind the ball lowers scores and if you aren't confident with that driver or 3 wood, put it away and carry another wedge or leave the space blank.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
I wish people would listen to this type of advice more. Confidence is underrated in golf. The working from the green backwarda approach breeds confidence. I don't care who you are, if youre confident, you play better. You only build it by playing clubs that you can. Then build outward with that new found confidence. I mean this isn't rocket surgery but so many people do it backwards

Do you think the 10 finger grip (separated grip) is bad? I swap between the interlocked and separated grips and i find the separated grip to be more comfortable. I feel like i have more control of the club with the separated grip. I can't get used to the overlap grip to use it.
@GolfSidekick

No problem with any grip. There is even a guy on instagram called cack handed golfer. I think he plays off a 9. You just jam with what you dig. 10 finger would have been blasphemy to me 15 years ago but nowadays, IDGAF golf dictates to do what you like and if it works, keep doing it as long as you not destroying other peoples games

I have bag my driver for at least 2 months now. first started from the Tee with my hybrid, now from a 5wood, once I have a loot of consistency with that club, willingly to hit even risky shoots, but my confidence tith that club is great, and usually hit it 175 ish yards. all of my other clubs I hit them flat, half of the time, except the hybrid, and have a slice.with my pitching with a new shaft i do feel a better swing, but i must still test that club. I also started to hit my dad's 4iron, that he does not use, that club needs more practice, the distance is still in the air on how far should i should be hitting it.

@@jameslovering9158 Depends on your feel. Putters are all about the confidence you feel while holding the thing. If you love the feel of a pool noodle, then you gonna hole putts. I like a thinner grip - I think...and that makes me feel better on the greens.
