Playas, I don't often play with the ladies. But Rahat and Tiha / chipandrun got hold of me for a game and turned out to be two superb legends who are one HELL of a lot of fun to play golf with.
Both tiha and Rahat decided to start taking golf a bit more "seriously" in 2018 and about a year later, the way they play, it's amazing.

Tiha has a long ball off the tee, a medium ball off the fairways but needed some SERIOUS help with the short game. She has good touch because she is an artist but neither her nor her husband Rahat had been shown the basics of putting.
I played and all the while observed them both. A few common things:
1. Distance control on the greens was a struggle
2. Short game can save Tiha 9 shots per side - that's the difference between a 54 and a 45! That could be the difference between a 110 and a 90!
3. Direction on the putts was a bit difficult and using a ball with a line down the middle may have hurt her more than anything - you must be a proficient green reader to use this technique well.
4. Her grip was hurting her by resting the right hand on the shaft and using the left arm to guide the putter. The right hand, she thought was out of play. But in fact, it had an influence on the club face, spraying balls all over.
I showed them how to putt on the practice green and it was an amazing transformation which you can see at the end of the video. I changed Tiha's gIt's so great to see two people so keen and passionate and excited to improve. Legends!

Matt, a question for you I got while watching you how to break 70 video just now for the first time: You speak often about, and you made the theme of that video, focusing on an achievable “low stress” process and letting that lead to results rather than obsess or get upset over every little thing. However, in that hooters tournament video, you reacted to many shots, probably a dozen, with anger of some kind including throwing clubs, bending over expecting putts to miss (including some that went in), etc. So how do you reconcile this, and, more importantly, what is your next mental comment to yourself AFTER these mini outbursts after shots you didn’t like? You clearly have some ability to clear that negative emotion and get your mind back into the process. What do you do to achieve this?
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
The Stress-Free approach is all pre-shot and up til the point of impact and follow through. Reactions to shots are up to you and the people you're playing with's tolerance. Obviously, better more positive or neutral reactions are ideal if that suits your game. I have always been an angrier golfer and it gets me playing a little better but I do endeavour to not react so much. I usually drop a club or get frustrated because of an inner thought that crept in during the setup and I let it affect my shot and that is frustrating knowing you should have backed away or reset. It's always that I should have known better problem that infuriates me. I was much worse before and would get into a total downward spiral and blow my scorecard up so badly. The main way to get over a bad shot is to just plan the next one as best you can and how you're going to get the ball into the hole in as few shots as possible without the need to take on crazy low percentage shots. It is just one of those realizations I came to where I was like, I can seethe about hitting it in the trees here or know that i can get up and down from 70 yards and just go and do it. Our thoughts just control us so learning to have confidence in yourself really led to no more thoughts like I used to think. Common ones were: "I should never bogey a par 5" after bogeying a 460 yarder then I would bogey the rest of them in a tantrum "I can't hit the driver anymore" changed to "let me put it away for today and bring it out on an open hole otherwise I can just dink it around iwith the long irons or 4 wood" "I can't putt" turned into "I just need to recalibrate my eyes again because I've spent too much time in front of the computer, just start it on your lin, it'll come back" "Oh great here comes another bogey, I'm on the bogey train now" after hitting it to a place where I can only chip sideways. "Okay just get it to about 100 and hit the sand wedge in and make the putt - easy"

I love your compassion in helping 100+ golfers improve into the 90's. Scoring in the 90s is a huge ego boost for a not-so-good player. Usually, it's just a few flubs here and there; for me, its the dreaded 50 yard pop up on a Par 5 that leads to overcorrecting for the rest of the round. I look forward to the day when you have 1million followers.

The one thing I really like about here game, is she is losing all her strokes “ on the course”. What I mean is, she isn’t really losing too many balls or hitting shots into the hazards. When all your shots are lost on the course without lost balls, you know if you clean up a few of the shots your scores will drop dramatically and it also means her overall swing isn’t too bad either.

Thanks for the tips. I've been working on my short game a lot recently and still have much work to do. I'm averaging 37.5 putts per round over last 20 rounds which is too many. As an aside I broke 90 for the first time yesterday by playing stress free golf. Even though I was hitting my driver well, I avoided trouble by driving with my 7 iron three times on narrow fairways and even my 8 iron once. Good progress considering I shot a 138 my second round in late October of last year. Power to the Playa!!!

Grigsby Poland Yessuh well played. The putts will come down but they are only too high if you are three putting a lot and missing your 3 footers. If so, it is time to hit that practice green getting yoir confidence up. Work backward from one foot from the hole. It all starts on the green but on the green it all starts closest to the cup!

Matt, your videos are changing my relationship with the game of golf. I'm not yet seeing the results in the scores, but boy am I having a lot more fun playing stress free golf while seeing longer stretches of good play happen within a round. If you're ever in Northern California anywhere near the Bay Area, golf is on me. I've been playing for 15 years, but have never had more fun! Between your tips on course management and low stress golf, I'm loving this game like never before! I played this weekend, and I noticed twice when outcomes focused golf ruined a string of fantastic shots. First, I had a run of ~7 good shots, focusing only on making the lowest stress shot each time, for back to back pars (honestly my first time ever). The second par was nearly a birdy - would have been my first birdy ever on a par 4 - that became a 6 incher for par after a long birdy attempt. I wasn't even thinking about that until the random twosome we got paired with made a comment about my par golfing leading the way into the back 9. HUGE mistake. I blew up on 10 and carried the stress for the next 2 holes. Second time was later in the round on the final par 5. Finally the nerves had settled and I was back into low stress golf, loving life, having a great time. I absolutely BOOMED my drive, nailed my layup to get me exactly where I wanted to be going into the green - 90 yards out, pin on the left center with plenty of green right and deep, and a perfect fairway lie. Beautiful - I have a wedge that I carry dead on to 90yds more than 90% of the time. This puts my best wedge in my hands, playing perfectly into my natural draw on a perfect lie. Aaaand then I thought to myself, "you've got a birdy on a platter here". Topped my best wedge 15 yds, hoseled the next one into water that shouldn't have been in play, and only got out with JUST a triple because of a baus putt. Keep these videos coming!

Sir this is why I make videos. Even if the score is not dripping (YET), it is all about falling in love with the game and wanting to get out there instead of quitting. Thanks for the comment and some day soon you will lose focus of the scores and you will get used to making pars to the point where it will be a routine. Well done waddaplaya

@@GolfSidekick I can certainly attest to the advantages and joy of stress free. It works. I play off 18 and usually score in the low to mid 90's. Today I shot an 86 which included two 'three off the tees' and an unplayable drop. In the past those setbacks would have had me taking on silly, one in ten chance, shots I couldn't realistically hit and compounding the errors. This time I let the previous shot go completely and stuck with the plan of only hitting the shots I am pretty sure I can pull off comfortably. The benefits of this are manifold, perhaps the biggest benefit, at least for me, is a growing sense of confidence and lack of doubt.

I honestly think the hardest part of Matt's system is just disciplining your self to put the time in on the putting green. I struggle with it for sure.

Guys it doesn't take long. You can become a great putter in a matter of hours. Steel ruler every night keeping it on all 4 feet of it. Don't worry, you'll need to make natural adjustments to do it - you can't do it wrong. And this can be done at home while tuning into the greatest golf channel ever created. Then go to the course and hit 2 footers in a circle for like 30 minutes. Then stand on one side of the green and learn to rock your shoulders back and forth and stop it inside 3 feet on longer putts. It won't take you long to get the vibe. Focus on the shoulders like a rhythmic metronome. Then go do 3 footers for 45 minutes all around the hole. Go anticlockwise though so that you can use it in preshot routine by "hitting the previous one" befor hitting your shot. Know what I mean? Remember when phil had that weird routine stepping off to the side to do the practice putt then step diagonally to the ball and put it in? That's from the circle drill! Watch the Mike Malaska Be Better Golf video. KZbin search MIKE MALASKA THE GAME CHANGER Once you get these basic down you will have achieved: 1. Keeping it on a ruler for 4 feet means you can start ANY putt on the right line in the first 4 feet. 2. You can hit pure putts that roll end over end. 3. You can control the distance by getting those shoulders rocking. 4. You'll have a great preshot feeling before the 3 footers. 5. You'll be a baus and grow an extra inch even when it's cold - get looser pants. And one big thing is don't focus much on the eyes being directly over the ball. That's nonsense. Whatever feels like your eyes line up to your alignment aid which lines up to your "spot" which lines up to your line....that's what works. That's why some great putters can have their eyes way inside the line and some are even over the line or outside the line. Whatever makes your mind agree with your eyes agree with your putter agree with your line. BOOMSKI

@@GolfSidekick I think it encourages a shorter backswing, better balance ( less lower body movement). less tenedency to look up on short putts and a smoother stroke that discourages de celeration Just observations I have made by watching good putters and it works for me ( Nicklaus , Palmer , Floyd, Casper,Stockton etc) Even your countryman Bobby Locke

miamistomp I agree and I forgot about it and started doing it again now. I have a tendency to have that ball creep back and I lose my eye-putter-alignment aid-brain connection

I'm not really familiar with c wedges. Are they essentially a lofted putter? The people I've seen using them tend to just use them like that around the green.

I can advise you to check for more info on the website of Cleveland Golf. This is a wedge and not a putter. I use them and, the S and C and like them. No, I'm not a pro. Just try to help.

They are Cleveland's game improvement chipper & sand wedge. Both have the wide sole. I got the Callaway Sure out for my daughter and it has really helped her pitch the ball onto the green without much (or any) practice. Wide soles work!

C wedge that Tiha was using was a little too "HOT" off the face for me to use as a chipping club though it does have 46 degrees of loft. It's a great bump and run club from a few yards away and does sit upright like a longish putter. The Callaway Xact (33 degrees?) I think it's called is pretty good for a chipper and also sets up like a putter.

@@GolfSidekick kills me not more people aren't using these types of clubs.Got thrashed by a guy in our City Championship last year as he used a chipper & my nerves wrecked my chipping. And my daughter has dropped off at least 4 strokes for 9 holes just putting the wide soled wedge in her bag. She broke fiddy 1st round of the year the very 1st time she used the damn thing for the very 1st time! Waddaclubselection!

Thailand. Bangkok. Super hot man. We were all dead at the end. We played during the hottest time from 11 to 4. One of the challenges that a lot of guys discount when watching these videos and assuming everything is easy lol. 37/38 degrees celcius (around 100 F). That gets tough the last 6 holes! Now in April and May we will have the hottest months. Yeahaw
