totally changed my game once i stopped trying to whip out my ping pong ding dong. as an example, the #1 handicap hole at my home course is a very long par 4 surrounded by bunkers. with a perfect drive, i will always have about 220 to the green. i used to always try to squeeze a 4 or 5 iron into the narrow green and typically end up in the bunkers 80% of the time. i now, pretend this hole is a short par 5 and i hit a smooth 7 iron to avoid the bunkers leaving myself with an easy 40-50 yd pitch. i can normally get this close for a great look at par and even if i 2 putt, i still make bogey. i have completely eliminated double bogey or worse.

Index 1 is the first hole at my course. You have to start smart or be behind all day. Bunkers short left, greenside left and fairway right at 230m, raised green. No way to attack, just gotta play for the bogey and take your maybe par on the days it happens.

I play 18 holes every Friday, got a coach who I see 2-3 times per month and practice 5-7 hours/ week. I shot 108 my first round. 15 rounds later (yesterday) I shot an 83. I’ve been watching him for about 8 months now. And I’ve been playing a ton of golf all year. As his recommendation, I stopped watching ANY OTHER golf channel so I could focus on EXACTLY what he talks about. I was a 20 something handicap when I started. I know this because I played with a guy using the SWINGU app. And it calculates it for me. Matt is so smart and has such a great, uplifting approach to the game. It is a totally mental game. About a month ago I broke into the single digits. I bounce around the 7 to 8.5 number now. And it is true. BORING,NOTHING FANCY, GOLF. The minute you make it fancy, you screw it way the hell up. Thank you Matt. It’s been an incredible journey. I’m looking for that 5 now. I broke 80 once. A 77. Rest of time it’s 80s and even get in a negative death spiral from time to time and lose it completely lol. I’ll let you know when I get it!!!!

@@rustynorth1876 great comment man. Agree 100%. I started playing about 2 years ago, playing around a 13 at the moment. Maybe a tad higher when I go to an unfamiliar course. I actually find the technical “boring” golf to be fun golf. Something about the way my mind works. I went to school for engineering which was a natural fit for me and I’m sure this may annoy some people, but I approach golf like a technical physics problem: I have to assess the conditions (lie, distance to target, wind, etc)., decide what shot to hit, select the correct tool from the toolbox (club from bag) and then execute the idea with the tool (put a good swing on it). For me, this is fun. I would guess others don’t find that fun and maybe I’m weird but it’s perfect fit for my brain. Enjoy man! Glad you’re having fun with it to. None of us know how long we have, might as well try and enjoy this strange thing called life! Be well man

Matty delivering the truth we all need. Breaking 80 is gloriously boring golf. I broke 80 exactly once in my first 24 years of playing golf regularly. The stars aligned that day. I have broken 80 75 times in the past 5 years, playing 30-40 rounds/year. The biggest things for me, which is pretty much what Matty says: 1) I found an instructor that I gelled with. I went through four to find the right one. I haven’t seen him in 3 years, but it was crucial to getting over the hump. Doom scrolling KZbin videos won’t do it. 2) through practice, I became very good at my short game and partial wedges shots. It’s nice to have a stack of “get out of jail free” cards. 3) I track my game. I use arccos so I know real distances of each club. 4) I adapt my game based on constantly changing reality. For two months this year, I leaned on my 7-wood on the tee a lot because of the confidentiality. I started hooking the crap out of it and haven’t been able to fix it on the range. My driver had been better, so I am hitting driver in more places. 5) manage expectations. If I am only playing once/week or I am playing an unfamiliar course, it’s going to be a fluid situation…probably a short-game day. I have gone from a 6.5 to a 3.6 this year for 3 main reasons: 1) playing 3 times/week 2) the LEWD system. I never paid much attention to subtle lie analysis before 3) the Rule of 12 (I use a simplified version) Now, I plan to break 80 every round at my home course. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, but I learn something in the process for the next round.

To all the Playa’s interested in Shot Pattern. One thing the app does when you enter your round is for your tee shot and your approach shot you indicate your target. So instead of dispersion to pin you have dispersion to your target. In the stats section it show you the dispersion of your shots relative to your target. I’ve been using Arccos for my dispersion. But all it tells me is my average dispersion when I hit the green and when I miss the green. Shot Pattern gives you your % within 15’, 30’ your median, a 68% circle and a 98% circle. It also gives you your 80% side dispersion and distance dispersion. This number is different from your median (close to Arccos average dispersion). For example my Arccos average distance from the pin is about 47ft with my 6H, but the dispersion with 80% of my shots is 60 side to side and 78ft front to back. One thing that has improved my game is it shows your shot inside relation to your circle. One thing I noticed is even though I had a 78ft front/back dispersion it was skewed to the front. So I’ve clubbed up to move the front/back dispersion circle closer to the pin. On average I’m getting more balls closer to my target. I have hit some shots longer but overall I’m ending up with balls closer to my target,

Depends where the three putts came from playa. Were they long putts originally? WHy were they so long, was it a green in regulation or did you hit Poor chip? Were you short sided on the chip? If you three putted inside 35 feet then yes the putting speed control is the key to work on. But if all three were outside 35 feet, it’s okay. We just need to get the ball closer than that more often!!

Thanks Matty. You nail it Sensei. I can't break 80 yet but I can limit myself to 'just' one hero shot per round (instead per hole, LOL). Last round I had 2 very good lob shots. Then on the last hole I hit a massive drive, left myself 65 meters on a flag half hidden behind a bunker on a dry/tight lie. Other half of the green was fine, no bunker in play. Instead of bump and running it I went for the lob again feeling pretty invincible (OMG, why does my brain do that to me, bloody hormones!) You guessed it - I don't own that lob shot 100%, and here came the bottom grove thin shot. overshot the green by 5 meters (punishment #1), ball took a massive hop on the tarmac cart path (punishment #2, which I know was there as well, another reason not to play that shot) and ended up a downhill greenside bunker lie (punishment #3) of the hole NEXT to it. Hardest sand shot I know, got it out but flew the green again into the pond next to it on the other side (punishment #4). Ended up double bogey, saved it by a good 1-putt . Should have been a no-brainer tap in bogey or if the universe allowed, a par. Will now tell myself the Boom Boom motto of 'If you don't like boring, you don't like scoring' before every shot. (not just before every round)

My handicap meanders between about 4.5 and 6.5 depending on the season so this was pretty interesting to compare where I'm at. On the Par 5 thing, my home course has five. I have spreadsheeted all scores for the last 43 rounds. My overall average on those Par 5's is +0.16 shots, ie Level Par. I have also measured all my Percent Error Indexes with pitching distances between 30 and 100 yards. In my measured practice I score a bit better than the 10% or so given here. But that's probably to be expected as for the one lone shot in a round you might be expected to do a little worse than in your repetitive block practice. On the 9 to 6 iron distances, I hit only about 90% of those distances at the 7:39 mark but it's a consistent 90% - I must have a slower swing than most 5 Handicappers?

Shot a 43 on 9 holes today. I probably could have kept my driver in the bag and made under 40, except two of my best tee shots were straight 275 yard drives on the first and last par 5. Off my bad tee shots I made smart recoveries that resulted in on the green follow ups with one or two putts. I also only lost two balls OB and had zero water hazard shots and zero bunker shots. Everything with my PW was 100% confidential, even normally awkward distancés between 40 and 80 were money with PW. Please Matty, shame me into putting away my driver and making smarter tee shots.

The next hole I sliced over OB, rehit with 3W and hit a house left on my draw, but lucked out as it bounced back into play. My dispersion off the tee is killing me. So on one course you’ll have 2 par fours that will play over par for most players and on the other course you’ll two shorter par 5 that play under par on average. It basically the same as asking if I break 80 from the 6000 yard tees does it count.

Hey Matty, love your work! But what’s all this “confidential” business??? Being confident is completely different to being confidential - they mean different things! Are you just joshing? 🤔😎

You must be new to the channel. Stick around and over time you will hear all sorts of funny stuff. Moreover, you will learn even more. Matty has helped my game so much. Lastly, check out his clothing line. Pretty sure links are in the description.
