They planned everything. Gon chose to deviate from the plan in order to prove he could at least land a hit on genthru (should sound familiar at this point). Had he stuck to the plan, he would've had a swollen eye and a couple bruises at most. But either way, he had a fall back.

I understand Rob in the sense that we all thought like him before seeing Hunter x Hunter, we were used to the relationships and rivalries between the protagonist and his "friend", typical as Naruto and Sasuke for example. Hunter x Hunter left us shocked every time we watched an episode because it was nothing like usual, more in the next arc where everything is impossible to predict.
