Weirdly enough, Google Earth has much more up to date satellite imagery then Google Maps. If you go on the historical images button on GE you can see that they could only be a few months old whereas GM could be like a year out of date. I mostly use google maps on mobile and I don’t think a lot of these features are available on mobile or they’re very well hidden.

The thing about flat roof pubs is 100% legit. Personally, I think if you're wanting a 3D view, you're probably better off using the browser version of google earth (or the app if you want, I'm not your dad) as you can adjust the viewing angle, and you can measure paths rather than just straight lines.

It's really only single storey flat roof pubs though, built on council estates. It's funny how the pubs were often the only remaining original building after rebuilding an area post war, and Toycat showed one of these. @stephanweinberger Жыл бұрын
For a 3D view you need aerial images from different angles, so you can actually work out the shapes of buildings. I guess DC just has so many flight restrictions that they were lucky to get even one perspective. Other areas of the world generally aren't mapped as well, often you don't even have one aerial shot (i.e. it's really satellite images), never mind the 3+ angles you need before you can even start about reconstructing the 3D shape of things. (btw. then google uses elevation models like eg. SRTM and just maps the flat images onto them, which often gives very weird results).
@JustANervousWreck Жыл бұрын
@@stephanweinberger thanks for responding, that’s interesting but if flight restrictions are actually why 3D doesn’t exist in DC, then I wonder why New York’s 3D view is so detailed when they have similar (but obviously not the same) restrictions.
