Not sure, but for the mesh cover it can be pealed off from the screen when the screen is removed.

The screen pasting technique was first brought by Motorola I believe. It was though simple but a non-professional hand can easily kill the screen.

It's always best to apply new thermal paste, but these type of rubberized thermal pad style ones would be hard to find. These can be reused but if you prefer to apply new thermal paste, just make sure not to use a highly conductive one.

Any tips on step 1? I still haven't gotten past successfully getting a tool in between the screen and the midframe plastic.

Hi, you can use a suction cup tool to pull up the screen a bit to try n give you some leverage. You can also use a thin razor or something like that but would probably scratch up the plastic boarder a bit. Also keep in mind if your screen is not broken or damaged, the chance of damaging it when prying it off is high.

Great teardown! Do you think the Pixel 4a 5G has any IPX rating? Some people claim that it's fine after it is submerged in water. What do you think?

Thank you. It doesn't have an official IP rating but has features in place to protect against some water. But again not sure to what extent. The charger port is covered in a rubber layer and prevents water from getting in as well as filters over the speaker and mic opening on the bottom of the phone and a rubber gasket around the sim try.

I just got mine a week ago and I already have dust beneath the glass where the camera is. Do you think I need to completely disassemble or is there somewhere I can try to blow compressed air in to clean it

If it's the front camera then you can try to use compressed air to try and blow some air and clear it out. I wouldn't suggest prying the screen off though for cleaning that since there is a high chance of damaging or cracking the screen while prying off.

I had mine about 2 mths., when I got caught in a downpour. The screen went dark, so I could not navigate the system. If the display went dark, is that necessarily and indication of damaged display, or could it be a "short" of some sort? Through authorized repair ctr. it would cost almost as much as phone. Do you think it's worth opening up?

It could be either the screen or corrosion inside shorting it. You can try taking it apart and drying out any water inside as well as brushing off any corrosion on chips or connectors with a small brush like a tooth brush and then testing to see if it will work. If not, you may need to replace the screen if that is the part that went bad.

Yes its on the back housing, I point it out @2:51 in the video. You would need to replace that flex cable with the secondary mic.

My accelerometer stopped working which prevents the screen from rotating. Is that replaceable? It wasn't noted in this well-done video. So I'm assuming it's hardwired onto the motherboard, but asking JIC. Thanks!

Hi, there are ways of adjusting or resetting the accelerometer but not sure if it's replaceable. There are many videos on youtube and info on google on how to reset or adjust, you can look through a few of them and see if it helps fix it.

Great Teardown. Are the glass and screen a single unit? Just dropped my 4a 5g and can't believe the quotes I'm getting! Would make sense if they're one part. Only had it 3 weeks! Gutted - I've never had a screen break before!

So you need to remove the screen first to replace the battery? That is one risky task, I wish the pull tabs were easily accessible just like the Pixel 3a.

Yup, and removing the screen on the 4a 5G is more difficult compared to the pixel 5 since you need to separate the screen from the glass portion instead of the plastic border and housing of the phone which increases the chance of damaging the glass or screen itself when attempting to pry it off. The pixel 5 screen removal was much easier.

Hi, It's not too difficult to replace the battery but the fact the screen has to be pried off before you gain access to the internals is a problem since there is a high chance of damaging or cracking the screen when prying it off.

Is there a way to disconnect the two microphones? I don't see a plug for it. I have a bluetooth mic for when I want to use the phone but I don't want google listening to everything I say anymore

The mic is soldered onto the main board. Breaking it off could possibly damage your main board.

FYI, yes you can remove the two mics with no problems. I used an air solder to remove the main mic and removed the secondary mic by snipping the ribbon cable just before it and prying it out. Flash and light still works too, and I keep a small headphone jack mic nearby when I want to use the phone. Also, small black stickers on all cameras which can slide easily to the side when I need to use them. Feels great to finally have privacy

If I am not mistaken, the glass on the back camera cover is just held on with adhesive. You can heat it up with a hair dryer and use a razor or thin tool to pry off the glass and apply new adhesive (if your replacement glass doesn't come with the adhesive tape installed) and install your new glass.

How long do you apply heat to the screen?

Just enough that its hot to the touch and you can apply more heat if needed while prying off if some portions of the adhesive is holding on stronger.

hey idk if you'll ever see this but please be aware and maybe annotate it on the vid. that there is a cable at the bottom of the phone that is easily damaged by sharp tools. if you damage it it fries the whole screen.

Its not too difficult but definitely not easy either since it requires removing the screen which if you don't have a damaged or broken screen, the chance of damaging the screen when prying it off is high. Also you would have to take the back off as well to disconnect the cable for the battery and then use the adhesive removal tabs to release the battery. Just a lot of work but doable. Not the easiest job but not the hardest either.

@@mritsch No you don't need to remove the main board. Just remove the screen, then the back and the plate that covers the battery connector. Then you can use the adhesive pull tabs to release the battery from the midframe. You can leave the mainboard intact and seated into the midframe as is.

Yes, but there's a good chance that a perfectly good screen will be cracked as with other Pixel models. It has to come off just to replace the charging port for example.

Oh ok, I personally think the 5 was easier since taking the screen off is with the plastic boarder of the frame of the screen compared to the glass how the pixel 4a 5g is which if you need to change just a battery, there is a high chance of cracking or damaging the screen on the 4a 5g if its not broken already. Ya the 5 doesn't have pull tabs for the battery but you only need some heat and pry tools and it will come off. Not to mention you only take it apart from one side, not both sides. I guess it's a personal preference.

@@primejc6697 Yea, the pixel 4a 5g also has a plastic boarder around the screen, but when disassembling the 4a 5g you need to separate the glass of the screen from the plastic boarder which can cause damage to the screen or glass. But the pixel 5 when disassembling, you separate the screen together with plastic boarder of the screen from the housing of the phone. So basically instead of putting a pry tool between the glass and plastic boarder of the screen, you put the pry tool in between the case/housing of the phone and the plastic boarder of the screen so it does not touch the screen glass. Hope this explains it. The tape is just called adhesive. There are many kinds of adhesive smartphone tapes out there not sure exactly which ones the manufacture uses but 300LSE or other smartphone adhesives can be used. If I can't find one that's made for the specific phone and already pre cut into the shape of the phone its meant for, then I find one similar from a similar model phone and modify it if need be. Hi, they are fragile so sometimes the screen can get damaged even when careful. Make sure the cable is connected properly, if still no luck you might need to replace the screen.
