6. The Adventures of Abraham in Egypt

The ancient history of Egypt intersects for the first time with the Biblical narrative when Abraham traveled from Canaan to Egypt during the 12th Dynasty, possibly during the reign of Sensusret III. By that time the great pyramids had stood for hundreds of years, and Egyptian civilization had realized some of its most important accomplishments. There are no known Egyptian records attesting to Abraham's visit, as recorded in Genesis 12, but the story, taken a face value, presents a picture compatible with the history of the Land of the Nile, and that perspective forms the assumptions of the presentation here. Hi Bruce..what a great lesson on Abraham. I had never thought that he was a "sheik" and had 1000's of people travelling with him, nor Lot....I do have trouble coming to terms with Jacob stealing Esau's birthright by tricking their father. But as you say God retaindls control and let's something happen as he has a future purpose. God bless you and your family.

Yes he did Exodus 4:1-5 KJV [1] And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. [2] And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. [3] And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. [4] And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: [5] that they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

Chas R I'm a Presbyterian - but you will find some major differences between the US and Australian pressie church and it's Scots mother church. we do not hold any man as an authority over all aka bishops, pipes, but we hold the Bible as the ultimate authority. this has led to problems, but the worst is that a Scots minister was th first to try to marry Darwinism to Scripture. countless lives ruined because of it. on the other hand, or apart from this kind of intellectualism slash heresy, it's been a pretty solid bible based teaching, always going back to the creeds.

Lorayin M maybe there's a lesson here on how our sins actually affect others. Our Western mindset is very individualistic. The Eastern mind is much more community focused. We have fallen into the lie that my sin is my problem and affects only me. To see Abraham's sin affect another and cause another to unknowingly nearly derail God's plan of salvation and thereby reap terrible consequences offends our Western mind. I am also convinced that God specifically meant for the promised Seed (see Genesis 3 ) to come through Sarai/Sarah for reasons we cannot fully comprehend. The story of Hagar makes that very clear. So God takes this incident of Abraham loosing the mother of his future son very seriously. Lastly, the plagues were a culturally relevant way for God to get Pharaoh's attention. Pharaoh was restored after the situation is corrected and, as far as we know, is not permanently harmed.

The message I get is the first instinct of man was to take a woman no matter what. If she was married the husband gets killed. Her Family is your family member in-law as we call it, gets to live. The word "together" to-get-her. The first instinct of looking upon a woman. It's up to man to not rape, pedophile, take other men's wives.

Not convinced that the nature of the plagues suggest any specific attack or mockery of Egyptian gods, the parallels seem fairly weak. They do make some sense (as you also mentioned) as aspects of some environmental disaster, perhaps some kind of toxic, red coloured algal bloom which led to the other plagues ? Edit: I'd just like to say, I'm really enjoying your series!

@free_gold4467
@free_gold4467 Жыл бұрын
@@shimshonbendan8730 I don't quite understand your comment Shimshon. The 'red algal bloom' is pure speculation about the nature of the plague that is described as the waters 'turning to blood', that is quite compatible with it being the work of the Hebrew God. Scientific explanations don't 'remove' God for those of faith, just offer explanations of the mechanisms through which God works.

There is a belief that Hinduism is actually modern Egyptian. So when you were saying cows were sacred, not like India.. If you trace culture and genetics, it's possible Egyptians migrated to India long ago, and they introduced the elephant to the region. Elephants are African, the Asian is a decendent of the African elephant. The people's we see in current Egypt are of Arabic descent from the muslim conquests 620s and on. They are not the original Egyptians. Idk where I stand on it, I need to look into it more, but it is interesting.

The elevator legend is well known by many peoples. For the Primitive one the fact that she, the pharaohness, acknowledged it and reacted to it, is a proof of her guilt. Sorry, but Cleopatra WAS a Pharaoh! She was actually the last one of all before the Romans turned Egypt into a province. After the death of Alexander the Great in 323BC, his empire was split up between his generals and Egypt was claimed by Ptolemy. He started what was known as the Ptolemaic dynasty and which lasted until the death of Cleopatra 300 years later. They adopted the title of the pharaoh and had themselves portrayed on public monuments in Egyptian style and dress. Yes, there were of Greek origin, but other of the later dynasties of Egypt were not native Egyptians, but Nubian, Persian and Neo-Assyrian. They are all recorded as Egyptian dynasties.
@amandamann25
@amandamann25 Жыл бұрын
@QCSORTER They ADOPTED the title of Pharoah. The Nubians were already under the Egyptian empire when they seized control and Kashta became Pharoah. The Assyrians appointed native Egyptians to rule. (Necho I, and then later vassal rulers) Also, Persian satraps were appointed and constantly resisted by native Egyptians. It is a matter of those who proclaim themselves as Pharoahs (Pharoahs of conquest) and Native True Pharoahs.

Abraham didn’t do anything unethical in recieving gifts from Pharaoh. He wasn't exactly excited about the possibility of losing his life or his beloved wife. Had Pharaoh wanted he would have just killed Abram and taken Sarai. Pharaoh essentially took his wife anyway and lavished Abram with gifts and wealthy for her. Im pretty sure Abraham went along to get along because he didn’t have a choice and had he protested he would have been killed. Thats why God afflicted Pharaoh. It took God to bring about a fear in Pharaoh to not harm His servant.

The reason for him saying "SOMEONE" was most likely an inside joke and/or a dog whistle to his world of academia. Because that historic "SOMEONE" opens up a whole pandoras box that reveals the truths behind the contemporary traditional stories and origin of Christianity that goes far beyond the "someone's" similarities to the Joseph story. Yes, the pyramids appear to have been built some 1000 years before the biblical text takes up a discussion of Egypt in its narrative.

Sir, it's been implied in some scholastic corners that as far as Egyptian history is concerned, a huge percentage of it is conjecture and rather shady guess work considering that later dynasties after the 12th (I suppose?) are in the habit of altering/revising their version of current and past history. Some of that is attributed to Rameses the Great who had his own version of the Battle of Kadesh versus the Hittites, engraved via hieroglyphs. Then there is the habit of defacing faces of stone monuments commissioned by previous rulers. Furthermore, according to David Rohl et al, there is the conundrum in Egyptian chronology that would not correlate to Biblical timelines due to the stubbornness of the French Egyptologists to make adjustments in their dating, asserting that Biblical timelines are the culprit short of saying that the Bible accounts have nothing to do with Egyptology. And with arrogance they continue to ignore/ostracise those who propose to adjust Egyptian timelines in order to put Biblical and Egyptian history in their proper and more accurate time/period context. With no disrespect to you and your lectures sir, my point here is that of concern in putting infos as "accurate" when the timelines conundrum of both sides have not yet been officially settled. Naturally, there will be scoffers and backlash to your lectures touching on Egypt. To date sir, there have been several suggested Pharaohs present before, during and after the Exodus, so that more questions arise rather than answers. Sorry for burdening you with this issue, I do love your lectures and appreciate the amount of research and time you have invested in them. God bless you sir.

Yes, I quite agree that history of any kind is subject to the political biases of the reporters. I do not hold myself out as an expert in ancient Egyptian chronology, but have relied as best I can on what appears credible scholarship and simply accepted at face value their findings as to chronology. Thanks for the feedback.

@@GoreBruce Sir, thanks for your response. Sometimes I feel an urge to inquire of or examine at the least, the methods of research or the resources by which contemporary historians present infos for facts. I believe David Rohl is very credible in the sense that he is both on the ground and at the archeological sites to draw evidence to support his premise. However, obstacles such as the Egyptian Antiquities and the French quarters of Egyptology seem to suggest they'd prefer to stay in their comfort zones rather than seek and present truth. With Zahi Hawas of the Antiquities it might seem more of "personal politics". This has contributed to the shadiness of the whole Egyptology thing. You might also be aware of the fact that certain mummies (if not all) can either go missing, misplaced and therefore mis-identified. This is according to some documentaries I saw. Indeed, thank God for the extra-Egyptian resources that get dug up such as Sumerian tablets that support OT historical narratives. Thank you sir for your time, sorry for wearing out your patience with my lengthy response. I'm still catching up on most of your lectures which I truly find fascinating and even compelling. Blessings to you sir for your wonderful efforts. - from the Philippines.

You are almost correct. Nectanebo II, the last ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, lost to the Persians in 343 b.c. The next native Egyptian ruler was Neguib, who came to power in the revolution of a.d. 1952.

I am not offering any opinion on the politics or religious significance of rule in modern Egypt. My only point was that the last Egyptian pharaoh was Nectanebo II. From then on Egypt was ruled by foreigners, beginning with Persia, the Egypt, then Rome, etc., until the mid-20th century.

Canaan was never Israel. Laban was a Canaanite but his son in-law Jacob was a Semite. Look, the son of Abraham never had the chance to meet one another what more live together. Abraham left Ishmael to Hagar, while Issac to Sarah . The 11 sons of Jacob never had the right to call themselves as Israelites simply becos their dad, Jacob, fought the angel Israel. It wasnt a sign from God that God denoted you guys as Israelites. Its mere conjectures. Joseph never called himself an Israelites. He was a Semitic Jew. The generation of Jacob are Semitic Jews ever since Jacob married Semitic Hyksos.

Just a note....Jews are the offspring of Judah. This is found in the book of Genesis written by Moses from the tribe of Levi. My favorite story is found in Genesis 18 where Abraham pleads with GOD for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. This is the attitude we as Christians should adopt...pleading for lost souls to accept salvation.

The semitic Hyksos were able to annex Egypt because Joseph was a semitic Hyksos...that ends after the Joseph who later became a Pharoah allocated 12 districts each to the 12 sons of Jacob to please.everyone. But it did not go well. They fought one another and destroyed each other until Solomon was born. Solomon ruled all of Nubia and Lower Egypt right up to the Levant(Syria and Palestine).

How to present a loving way to point out that "Christians" practice paganism .HUMM @ 40:42 Christmas , Easter , Sunday as a holy day, etc. are pagan lies & strongholds. Wake up and smell the coffee. The path to destruction is wide and well traveled. Research the history of IGNATIOUS The Self appointed 1st Bishop at the Council of Jerusalem who coined the word Christian and began the Start of "Church" and the Catholic deceptions just began. Protestants are Catholic and don't know it. If you choose to be apathetic and go along to get along and think you are safe as a result, well I do not recommend it. Please prove me wrong. ---- Isaiah 42.8 I am YHWH And My esteem I do not give to another.. Matthew 5:17-18 is a key text for interpreting the Sermon on the Mount and the entire gospel of Matthew: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, " until heaven and earth pass away" , not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until ALL is accomplished.” Here Yahshua HaMashiach says that not one iota (jot) or dot (tittle) will pass away from the law. Seek and you shall find the way. Peace

Jesus is fully divine and fully human. He isn't anything like the pagan demi-gods who indulged in hedonistic acts and promiscuity. He came to save sinners not to destroy them like the pagan gods. The pagan gods are hypocrites, they tell you what to do but don't care about your difficulties . No pagan god would do what Jesus did, they are power hungry and they fight among themselves. They are selfish and they would never put themselves in the position of man. On the other hand, Jesus left his glory and humbled himself to save his creation according to the plan of God. Jesus became something lower than angels - a man. Throughout history kings and emperors wanted to become gods and be glorified by their subjects but only one God was ready to become a man so that he could share his glory with us (his subjects) by defeating death, darkness and sin through his wonderful sacrifice.

Zadok, There you are at it again....!! 1+1+1=1 is so confusing and makes no sense at all. Hence it fits very well if this concept is called "Confuciusm" fitting like a glove. Moreover 'Christian, Christianity, Christos & bible" are not Semitic term or language, the native language of the Messiah, Son of Mary.
