Hello from Oklahoma! What's sad about this is they were trying to get away from each other but couldn't. Gorilla's like people grow up and strike out on their own. This can't happen in a cage.

Never mind a cage. It happens in any community where something happens and there's a dispute. People just stop talking to each other, and avoid contact, but at least you can have your own private space to retire to, where these poor creatures have nowhere to go. It's a horrible situation, especially when they can't communicate their fears and anxiety.

In the states it's very routine for zoos to move or loan out animals, including gorillas, for just that reason, but also for breeding purposes. The gorilla Harambe that was tragically killed in Cincinnati when that little boy got into its enclosure was actually on loan from a zoo in Texas, I believe.

Kiyomasa has been in Silverback training all his life from Shabani.This is the natural order of things for his growth and for the safety of the troop.We may not like it and Nene& Ai might want it to stop....but Shabani is the leader.Nene will always see Duckie as her baby gorilla.🌻🦍🦍🧡

When gorillas don't eat, there's something going on. The family dynamic definitely seemed off this morning. For his own safety, Kiyomasa needs to head to a bachelor troop for the time being, I think.

You don't put eligible males in a bachelor group unless you have to. Bachelor groups are more for aging males or males that can't live with a female, usually because they are aggressive. It's never good to put a male that you plan to make a group with, in a bachelor group.

St. Louis zoo in the US just sent Jontu, a 26 year old siverback, from a bachelor group to a zoo in Chicago where he will be the leader and breeding male for several females. In the wild, gorillas join bachelor groups and may stay there for several years before being able to secure their own females and form a troop. It's strictly a numbers game, Western Lowland gorillas will not accept more than one adult male per group. This leaves more males than females with no family group to go to. In addition, Japan's zoo gorilla population is in a bind right now: Gentaro is growing too old to stay with Momotaro's group, and Haoko's daughters are getting too old to be left with and possibly bred by their father. The Japanese gorilla gene pool is also becoming an issue; an exchange with another country would help diversify the genetics. It's a multifaceted problem that the Japanese zoos have not seemed willing or able to address. They certainly haven't been publicly transparent with any planning or decision making regarding the situation.

@@pamcunningham9608 you are right. Sometimes if there is nowhere else for them to go they will put them in a bachelor group. But usually if they have plans for them they won't. However, like you said, I haven't heard a word about his future. I know they usually won't put him in with a female until he is a silverback, but he may be one completely by the end of the year. But I know here in the states we seem to have an abundance of males, so there is quite a few bachelor groups. Hopefully they can find a nice female for him and he can have his own family.

Hopefully if he does have to wait, it will only be a couple of years before having a group of his own. Annie, I would love to see get set up with Lope from the UK...but that's another conversation. 😄

Annie always stay’s away from the fighting. I’m sure with Annie becoming of Age it has to make Shabani unsettled and also does this Mean that Annie will also have to be moved. She surly can’t mate with her father. I hope Ai has another little one to keep excitement within the group. Nene is old and probably doesn’t have much time left. I agree that Shabani is a great father (much more so than Momotaro, although he did not have a father to learn from as he grew up) and a prime specimen for breeding; I have no information on the inner workings of zoos in Japan, but also agree that they are really missing a great opportunity to perpetuate the population of Western Lowland Gorillas there. I have commented often that it is a shame that Shabani has not had the opportunity to have more children. 😊

I too have observed this family since they were little “ kids” and wish very much that the zoo would have better plans but I heard zoos from USA wouldn’t exchange gorillas with Japan or China because they don’t have good standards raising their gorillas. @John Wright , Shabani has always been a patient and great Dad. But there does come a time when the son will try and fight the Silverback, Dad for dominance. When that happens, the Silverback must hold his ground and remind the Son & the group that he is the boss. With Nene always fighting Kiyomasa's battles and coddling him may have given Kiyo too much ego and confidence thinking he can do what he wants. Shabani needs to keep the group under his control to maintain the peace and proper balance & hierarchy. Kiyomasa needs to surrender and humble himself to Dad or things will get worse. I had heard many times this happens. The Son grows bigger and tries to take over the group. The Silverback will never submit to the son and that is where things can become very dangerous to the Son who thinks he can overpower the Silverback. Kiyo must have challenged Shabani and stepped out of line badly to have Shabani so upset. ( Remember, we only see minutes of a 24 hour day and we don't see what happens at night and early am. We can miss a lot of things that happen behind the scenes when the Zoo is closed ) Shabani must be stern and consistent to get Kiyo and the family to submit to him. He is the Boss and he must do what he needs to to regain his place. Sometimes, when the Son keeps challenging the Silverback, they have moved the son to protect him. We all hate seeing this beautiful family at odds. Shabani and Shabani have always been very close and playful with each other. Saying that, no doubt Kiyomasa has to have been going too far and pushed Shabani to knock him back in line. The Zoo staff watches this family very closely and knows what is normal and when to step in. Gorillas need to work out fights and issues by themselves. They usually always find the common ground to make the peace. But, they must figure things out between themselves, without the staff butting in and the staff cannot fix these issues for them. I;m sure the staff is well aware whats happening, they are the experts and we need to trust they will do what needs to be done. This may just be a situation that will work itself out. But, the Gorillas need to do it or it will just go back to fighting if they are separated now, nothing gets solved, they will reunite with the same issues and they know what they are doing more then we understand. Just like with humans, when our teenage kids act crazy and break the rules, we must discipline them before they get worse. I think that is what Dad is doing. Shabani being so easy going may have given Kiyo the idea that he is a push over. That is Kiyo's mistake and he must learn the hard way. Shabani is doing his job, keeping the peace and everyone in line. Hard to see at times, but he is doing what a Silverback must do for the peace and everyone knowing he is still the boss and they must submit to him. I hope they find harmony again.

What deeply resonated with me were your words “they know what they are doing more than we understand.” As I write this, we are three days past whatever happened here, and Kiyo, as confused as he looks, seems to be humbling, almost begging, for Shabani’s acceptance again. But I’m really concerned about how fast Annie could go down. Such anguish in her face. Another vid just popped up-I hope to see her eating.

@@katewaterbaby , Thank you for the kind reply. It is so hard for us who have watched this family for years and none of us like to see the family at odds. Especially the young ones. If you noticed in this video, the staff was watching them from inside that big window when they were outside and no doubt are watching everything and they will do what is necessary if this gets really bad. But, as I was always a "worrier" and often so soft hearted as I started watching Gorillas and would humanize situations too much, to my mistake. I was lucky to have others who knew so much be kind enough to educate me and to assure me that the Gorillas know what is happening even if we don't understand, they do and they are the only ones who can work out any issues and the staff cannot interfere they must find the solution through their ways and at times it can be rough, but, the are the experts to what they need to do to bring calm back into the family.. Thats why we shouldn't worry a lot because they are very smart and can work things out within the group. I'm behind on this families videos. There are two more I have saved I want to watch. But, I just popped on and saw there is another video under a different page from 2-12 and it seemed things are better as they are eating more and at around 5:08 to around 8:30. Kiyomasa sits near Shabani in a very humble and cautious behavior. But, Nene comes in at the end to make sure Kiyo is okay. Shabani has a hard job. He has to keep the whole family together and in peace and I think some stuff must have happened to really piss him off enough to behave so strick on Kiyo and the females. Now maybe Shabani seeing Kiyo seeming sorry, Shabani may just let it go as he learned a hard lesson and they may be playing as they use to. But, they will fix it, we can just chill and learn more as we watch it unfold. They are really so smart and amazing in all they ways they handle situations. Ots because female offspring are not a threat to Shabani.. His male offspring are.. Usually, as the male sons come of age, they will either leave for a bachelor group on their own, or will be forced out.. In captivity, Silverbacks tend to try to separate their male offsprings even earlier because they are confined to a smaller area. Its really sad.

In the wild, when the sons reach a certain age they have to be completely subservient to the silverbacks, their dads if they want to stay in the group. Teenagers also get disciplined in the wild all the time for acting out too much. I've seen Gentaro go through a similar situation with his dad, Momotaro when he was getting older. Gentaro was extremely depressed about it at first. Shabani doesn't often discipline his kids. It's probably jarring and confusing for Kiyomasa to see his dad acting less playful and more competitive and disciplinary. I have a feeling that it's a test to show his son who's boss. Kiyomasa is not used to the change. Who knows, maybe Shabani took things a bit too far.

It doesn't work like that. The process is actually quite complex. There first has to be an opening in another zoo for a new young male silverback. There also have to be a series of approvals, facility inspections, and medical tests run on the the animals. The zoo you're moving them to also can't have any young and newborn gorillas because the new male may attempt to kill them to bring their mothers back into season. It also impacts each zoos monthly health insurance policies and how much they'll be covering for the near future. Sometimes it even requires a transition period where the primatologists from the old zoo accompany them at first to help the animals adjust to their new surroundings. In those cases, you'll need zoos relatively close to each other for the primatologist to be capable of splitting their time between facilities. Again, it's really not as simple as one would presume it is on the surface. It's an overly complicated process, in all honesty.

😧 Oh dear! 2:19 Shabani is way deep in the doghouse in one of his bossy moods on this day causing discord in the troop. 2:45 Ai is never intimidated by Shabani, and protects mom Nene. 5:06 I suspect Shabani wanted everyone to "return to normal" and stay outside to eat, but by then 6:15 there was way too much tension. 11:47 Shabani continues his stiff-legged stalking intimidation. 12:29 Kiyomasa has had enough of his dad's harassment . 😣 12:57, 16:25 Poor Kiyomasa. All the while Shabani tries to maintain some balance, and he does it in his own way, which gets him put under the dog 🏠 house sometimes 🤣. Shabani absolutely means no harm. He truly loves his family, but you know how he is. Um he just usually steps on quite a few toes when he's in proper silverback mode 😆.

Love this family but we all knew it was coming kiyo is “going” to challenge and we all know Shabani isn’t having none of that! 😂They love each other but It’s natural. I’m just wondering why all the zoos aren’t taking measures to move some of them as they did in the past. They need a set up like they did with Frank! Shabani’s brother is trying to mate with his daughters 😢😖, those 2 need to be moved as does gentaro. I’m sure the zoos are talking and planning something or I hope so!

i agree, this has been my biggest fear that they were going to take too long. once it starts there will be no stopping it and it will end badly. everyone not wanting gentaro to leave yet. i am like move them before its too late. the sons and dads doing a challenge is something no one wants to see. i hope there is a plan in place in case it starts. a zoo in the states the winston troop, a young gorilla just turned silverback challenged the older in charge silverback, its an upsetting video to see but at least they got them seperated before it went too far and had a seperate area to put the young silverback to. very upsetting situation to the troop.

Yeah I saw that part when gentaro bit his dad on the back and momo almost ripped him apart. But shabani is pretty chill tho and loves his kids so much. He probably just want to remind Kiyo who's the boss by instilling fear which it actually worked. Now they are playing again and Kiyo loves to be with his dad again.

Thank you, Something About Gorillas, for your wonderful videoing. I really appreciate the text on the screen explaining what's happening. Tense times for the Shabani troop, but it is the gorilla way. It's normal. Kiyo is a teenager and is going to start challenging his father. Shabani has to remind him who the leader is, if he allows him to throw his weight around it would cause a lot of upset and imbalance in the family and in the wild could be dangerous too.

I think something happened when they were all in the basement that Shabani didn't approve of! Maybe with Annie. It's all natural and Shabani is only doing his job! He's not hurting anyone, it's all just chasing! We should be grateful for that! Undoubtedly this will escalate the more Kiyo tries to intimidate his dad! As long as he submits to his Dad's threats he'll be fine! It's when he doesn't. That's when the true fighting begins and that's when he will be moved ! As they did with Frank and Winston! Hopefully it won't come to that! Shabani just doing his job !🦍❤️

St.Louis Mo. had at least 5 healthy Silverbacks. I would visit at least 6 times during the summer. Went this summer and didn’t see not one. I love watching these amazing animals. ❤

I think something may be bothering Shabani (disease, pain?), in his past enclosure he was quite relentless although he never went serious with the females (unless Annie was attacked), it was a terrible enclosure...or he is realizing Kiyosama is growing up and he needs to be put in his place, Kiyomasa has been quite playful with his father so far, but as he grows up that attitude was going to change to challenge, if Shabani realized his son is no longer a kid then there is no way back.

This is kind of typical for teenagers. And human families too in many cases. Mama and Granny spoil the son ankd won’t let Dad discipline the son. Much to the sons detriment. Perhaps he disrespected his Dad and Dad hasn’t had the chance to have it out with him yet because of the ladies. Moja, a first child, in Prague, was so adored by her family and keepers alike that her teens were like this too. I don’t know if the videos are still up, but one is quite funny. It showed her sulking and her Mom tried for quite a while to cajole her out of it, to no avail. Thank you for taking the time to share your wonderful videos with us. 🙂

Shabani is horny, it's been months of blue balls. It''s time to either find him another female or Ai needs to step up to the plate. This is the exact same way Shabani has always acted during his love games with Nene. He has recognized that Nene is no longer available to him and resents Ai for not presenting herself to him and Kiyomasa is the only one left to take it out on. He would never go after his sweet Annie like this. And Kiyo has been a jerk lately. If I were Shabani I would be slapping Kiyo around as well.

I feel terrible for Kiyo he has nowhere to go to avoid Shabani. His hormones are raging to get away and be with his own females. Shabani is great and so is Kiyo it's just time for them to separate like Gentaro at Kyoto zoo. But Japan's politics and ownership of them, let's that get in the way of the gorillas well being and happiness. There is a zoo in San Diego that has 4 silverback biological brothers, 3 are silverbacks and 1 is a blackback like Gentaro and Kiyo. Too many males but they had a plan and it's working, unlike this country. Before letting a female get pregnant that infant should have a plan of where it is going to live after it reaches the age of maturity. You are right Kiyo is tired of being looked at and wants his own apartment and girls.......
