It's not prerecorded. Colbert is in the balcony doing his part. That's why when his part comes up all the band members turn their focus towards the balcony. It's to tell the audience where the current performer is and where they should be looking. If Colbert had prerecorded his part they wouldn't have turned focus to him because there would be no reason to, he wouldn't be doing anything so they would instead have turned to the screens to draw the eye there. The reason he nails it, despite him saying that rapping is the thing he sucks at, is because it isn't improvisation, he memorized his part ahead of time. When he says the one thing he sucks at is rapping, he means like rap battles where they are making up the lyrics as they go, not that he is incapable of rapping in general. This is made more evident by the lead singer looking straight at Colbert and clapping at him after he does the first rap bit.

Gorillaz is my favorite band, easily. They have been since their first album. Damon Albarn is a GENIUS. One of the greatest musicians of all time, (THE greatest in my opinion.)
