Back when this Game came out, my Father decided to buy our first PC. Unbeknownst to him he bought one the most expensive Gaming PC´s available which came with a bunch of Accessories and Games, including UT99. So as a 7-year old boy, i installed it and got immediately hooked. Every Time my parents were away, I would end up playing Facing Worlds, standing on top of one of the Towers and Sniping the shit out of the enemy Bots, chaning Monsterkills in the process. This ended a couple of months later, when one evening - i was playing UT way past my bedtime - my parents came home from a party, only for them to hear in shock M-M-Monsterkill or the anguish Screams of dying Bots and dismemberment sounds coming from the PC Speakers. This Game has a special place in my Heart...

The essence of atmospheric (or intelligent) drum&bass as it was known back then. People interested in this kind of sound may want to check the music by the label Good Looking Records: LTJ Bukem, Artemis, Tayla, PFM, Makoto, Seba ... I used to play UT99 as a kid, and it's incredible how your childhood experiences seem to hardwire your brain to certain things. Every time I listen to this style of music I get really nostalgic. Recently I decided to search for some of the games I played as a kid and it all makes sense, as they were an integral part of my upbringing and many things I appreciate today date back to those experiences. I'm still trying to find all the maps I used to play, I'm not sure if they were mods or not. Either way, what a game!
@ArnieMcStranglehold

Wanna hear something equally nostalgic? Look up the album artists for this game and several other of your favorite games from then. Alexander Brandon has been involved in SO MANY of the childhood games I remember. I wanna meet that man and thank him for a lifetime's worth of memories through music.
@mikerelvas
@mikerelvas 2 жыл бұрын
@@ArnieMcStranglehold Alexander Brandon, Brian Tyler, Amon Tobin and a few others come to my mind. There's a familiarity in their symphonies that, even if you find them in another videogame or even movie, you can recognize it because they've been present in your life for such a long time. I don't play videogames much anymore, but to be honest I feel like that uniqueness is not present in more recent games (exceptions apply).

 @JordanManfrey (friends and) I did this as a teen as well, 2004 or so. We played Skulltag (Doom 2 DM/CTF) on the Dells. Anyway found out that Net Send was still enabled on every PC... so I tried it. net send "moo". And it popped up on every teacher's computer within a minute or two. Oops. Next day we visit the Principal's office. It's the new one, and we're the new freshmen. She yells at us for fifteen minutes in the meeting room about wasting school resources before making us call our parents. All the parents chuckled or didn't care. But no, that Principal, she was like "I have to show these teens I mean business!" Now, twenty years later, I'm IT support/admin. I worked for a school district for a few years, and the kids can sneak games via Chrome extensions to work around the Admin listing rules. As long as it's not pr0n or malware, have fun :)

So happy I heard this song yesterday in fortnite store, had to buy this, it's been a very long time since I last played unreal tournament but yo this brought me back just vibing or getting salty with the fellas while playing this game including, old school counter strike, Doom, Quake, Half Life Multiplayer and Duke Nukem 3D. Than i installed UT first time and try to play against something else... Bots. When i noticed first time i rly did not belive what am i see. An AI and a solution what can simulate and play like a human. Cooperate, help, kill each others.. This was my biggest shocking thing what i experienced first time in the world of computer games. Bots are totaly changed the gameplay in these times. And now i happy to see the UT4 is following the first UT's atmoshere finaly. Best HC FPS eva'!

I was never a huge fan of FPS. Usually preferred RTS and RPG games. But UT99, now that was an awesome game. Spent a good chunk of my high school years playing it. What was really amazing about it is that it was slow enough so the strategy mattered and not just fast fingers (at least at my noob level that was true).

Arena Fps are fun because when you get used to the speed, it evens out, you get into the flow, and you are opened up to a more strategic macro-paced meta game. I think that's why the slower-paced tracks in UT work so well.

It's OK to design large open maps in games like this but that crap there is just a symmetrical shooting gallery. I dunno maybe if you're 8 years old you'd find it fun having to endure getting spawnkilled for 10 minutes in a row over a chance to be the spawnkiller for the other team for a few seconds, as an adult I require a more sophisticated sport than that.

this is crazy good, the aesthetic is so cool, look at this awesome map and music, the futurism and escapism and sick jungle with people dueling on a space asteroid in a virtual world, Ive never even played UT but as a big half life player i easily sympathize with all my brothers here in the comments who for sure have some great memories of this that many can never understand. This is what gaming should be and has lost. you can't even get escapism anymore in games like garbage fortnite style and modern money grabbing FPS with their skin economies marketed at poor kids who dont know shit about what gaming used to be or what it could have been if this real oldschool shit was still going. the next generations of gamers will never share in any of this :(

Man, Unreal Tournament 99 was one of my favourite games as a young teenager. Loved spending hours after school on single player Facing Worlds back in the day. This along DM-Morpheus guaranteed hours of fun! Still two of my most favourite maps of all time of any FPS - so simplistic yet so fun and with brilliant and imaginative design. Luckily, the game is still available in Steam. Amazing nostalgia! Huge props and respect for Inoxx / Cedric Fiorentino who created these two of the greatest maps, as well as for Michiel van den Bos who made this amazing soundtrack

I was born in 2003, so obviously too young to know this game at its peak. Though, I remember playing this map on a TF2 community server and having a lot of fun, despite it being a little unsuited for TF2's weapons (some weapons were way too good). This map, the space aesthetics and this amazing DnB song are really nice - it's uncommon to see such simple yet cool things made today.

In fifth grade I set all the kitchen window blinders on fire while playing UT instead of watching the oil on the stove while preparing lunch. I was very lucky I didn't get burnt. The kitchen had a faint burnt oil smell for a few years even after the special cleaning and repainting the walls and ceiling.
