In all honesty, Goten has a great deal more potential than Gohan, even having a slight advantage in potential than Trunks due to being a super saiyan at a younger age than Trunks and being close to Trunks in power. Goten simply doesn't achieve his full potential in dragonball. Even Gohan thought at one point that Goten could be stronger than himself someday. If Goten trained as diligently as Goku, he would surpass him, just as Gohan did a couple of times.

The problem is, characters like Gohan, Goten and Trunks don't really know how to train on their own. Like at Future Gohan and Future Trunks. Their gains were so limited because of their lack of knowledge. So the question is, Would Gohan , Goten or Trunks even know how to train themselves?

Goten definitely has the most potential out of all the saiyan hybrids, he is just wasted potential He is the son a mastered ssj goku whereas gohan and even trunks were son of version of their father when they were weaker Turned ssj at 7 with minimum training and was nearly on par with trunks in power even though trunks is a year older and trained a lot in the gravity room with vegeta, goten only trained with gohan and chichi for a couple of days

U mean writing? It doesn’t make sense for me that Goten is stronger or equally strong as Trunks when trained. Trunks is the *first born* son of Vegeta after all. The pecking order should be Gohan > Trunks > Goten. However, if it comes to down to genetics. It’s clear Goten has more potential since his parents are both fighters.

Toriyama said that Goten and Trunks can go SSJ faster than their progenitors thanks to them being raise in a peaceful world. If we use that plus Universe 6’s INCREDIBLY powerful Saiyans, I think it’s easy to assume that the more peace that a saiyan is raised in will result in a far stronger saiyan. There’s tons of other factors too like Goku and Vegeta being stronger when they conceived the younger boys. When it comes to potential I think that Goten and Trunks do have more or the very least just as much. The issue is that I think he just wasn’t motivated enough in the future to train like Goku, which pushed Goku back from forcing him. Plus Goku wanted to make sure the reincarnation of Maijin Buu was trained to be humble and good, I don’t think he was exactly uninterested in his son. We saw that Gohan reached SSJ Blue levels in no time after training with Piccolo and Future Trunks reached something close with his form. I think the only thing keeping these characters from having their potential boosts is the writing having no need for them at the moment.

My boy Goten!!!!!!! Lets get started Q. First my boy threw hands with a SSJ Gohan at the age of 7 & if he could fly wouldv'e been a serious opponent in a real match (prolly still losing). I also think the emphasis of "play figthing" with trunks was a bigger impact power wise than training with chichi than implied....Trunks is teaching/inadvertently training him how to get stronger while fighting cuz we all know saiyans get stronger while fighting & they aint play fighting like normal kids & if you have seen kids play fight they aint got no chill! Chichi taught him "how" to fight, defend, & stay disicplined while fighting, not get stronger thats why she was so surpised when he turned super saiyan, she was just teaching him the Ox king/ roshi's fighting style that we seen goku and everybody else use, specifically just like chichi when she fought goku in the 23rd WMAT in dragonball. He just took that fighting style to a higher level when he would fight trunks and others, so there's no problem with his fighting. & to talk about that rage boost/ power boost (leaving out bio broly cuz that turned me up!) When Goten saw Super buu step on chichi as an egg right before ya boy Piccolo stopped him, i always felt he was deadass finna snap, Idk about going ssj2 cuz he wasnt strong enough but that definetly had a big impact on the motivation & dedication of his character & we see that when he went two weeks straight training hard in the HTC from the jump with minimal breaks while we saw trunks goofing off & drinking sodas, Goten wasted no time & got significantly strong to the point that he went from weaker than Android 18 to stronger than Android 18 & base fusion went from getting whooped by fat buu to piccolo having ackknowledged & gotenks thinking that just his base was enough to beat fat buu at that time. Goten until the end of Z has never shown not to love fighting just as much as goku & you can see this whenever fighting comes up how excited he gets(ex:buu)... If he had goku's influence from the jump & didn't look up to a lazy gohan who did no training while an adolscent, he wouldv'e been way stronger to the point that if goku had trained him, he possible wouldv'e been SSJ2 lvel when the tournament started & possible closer to vegeta if not stronger!!! Even in super he would ask goku if he can go train with him but chichi keeps fucking stopping him every TIME!!! & this leads to the end of Z where after goku let kid buu kill him & waited for UUB to show i doubt that goku actually trained goten until when we see him do it on screen because goku was suprised Goten hadn't improved by doing self alone training which nobody taught him,(YOU cant teach an old dog new tricks ) & thats in essence what goku was trying to do because i think he put more time into himself & pan than into goten before we see him train goten. The burden of peace, the burden of chichi post buu, the burden of trunks having to go be an Capsule corp official, & the burden of having a weak mind setted older brother who only wants to crack MR. SATAN"s daughter & raising a child in which goten looks up to, all inevitabally made Goten the way we see him in the end of Z.... I dont think its Goku's fault that he didn't take up the responsiblity to keep him getting stronger & take over as a mentor immediately after all these events i just named unfolded because we've never even seen him do it except when he trained gohan in the HTC & thats alot of fators to put on goku's mental for reasons his son's motivation for fighting is gone especially since goku was dead during his upbringing so he wouldn't know all of these are reasons he trained & fought....if he even cared that is. Though it wasn't goku's fault, if he did take up that responsiblity as a father & make up all the lost time he lost from goten's childhood, while creating his dream son like he wanted in the beginning of DBZ even tho its uncharacteristic, Goten wouldv'e def learned SSJ3 & been exposed to way more methods of training maybe even going to the otherworld & getting more fighting experience,techniques & tips.. & for some reason we have to bring up DBS he def wouldve learned trunk's form & debatibally been the 1st or 2nd strongest saiyan in the entire series behind or in front of goku if goku had trained him because he def wouldv'e rekindle that motivation & made my niqqa GOten a total monster!!!!!!! My #1 favorite character!! My niqqa Goten.

I've always wanted Gohan to properly take over for Goku after Cell, then at some point later in the story Toriyama could have Gohan settle down, then basically make Goten the new young Goku and Trunks would be his Rival, but Trunks and Gotens Rivalry and Friendship would have been ever closer than Goku's and Vegetas.

Goten was allowed to train with Trunks early on (which could explain why they’re both so powerful), but Gohan was constantly being gated by ChiChi his entire childhood. I would love to see all 3 of them put in more work in DBS tho.

(There's a Tl:Dr at the bottom) Btw I don't think that just because he doesn't get rage boosts like the others doesn't mean his potential is weaker. Sometimes you gotta consider character like with the Uub situation. Goku doesn't really force people to train with him, it was clear from seeing Goten that he stopped caring about his fighting potential but that doesn't make it weaker. Meanwhile Uub got what he wanted from the tournament and actually did want to train with Goku because he actually did want to fight, he liked it as a sport. I doubt that it's because he didn't see anything in Goten like you're implying, Goku isn't gonna force Goten to train, it's that simple. We also know that potential doesn't just head out with age, that was stated by Vegeta when he said Gohan still has plenty of latent power in him, he just doesn't access it. So in regards to Goten to say that his potential is less than trunks and Gohan because he's a slacker, I would say is wrong. Those 2 are counterparts to one another so it's safe to assume that it's on par with each other. You argue it's because we've seen Gohan and Trunks get rage boosts but when has Goten or kid Trunks been pushed to that degree? it's clearly life or death when they do it so is it really fair to say that Goten can't? I would say that Goten is a ball of talent that likes to show off his tricks but doesn't push himself beyond the cool stuff. He's passive and very impressionable, capable of changing his attitude quickly, from pissed off at buu to playing with Trunks again. If there is a difference between Goten and Trunks's potential, I'd say it doesn't even come close to a Caulifla and Kale situation. Goten's potentially doesn't seem up to snuff until you realize that he doesn't get into hopeless situations where there's literally nothing to do but fight or die, like Trunks with Zamasu or Gohan and Cell. TL:DR: 1, Goten's circumstances never lined up to give him a rage boost because he has stuff like fusion in his arsenal and is impressionable, 2, potential doesn't wane in DB or if it did it doesn't anymore, 3, Goku won't force Goten to train, it's not because he doesn't see anything in Goten but does in Uub.

I always thought Gohan had the most hidden potential because of his nature (personality) not just his genetics. He is a gentle protector and brave even in the most extreme situations. Those are prime conditions for rage boosts and exponential growth under pressure. When he sees people and lives are endangered by evil he is able to tap into unfathomable strength and righteous fury. Trunks and Goten simply don't naturally have that kind of mindset to reach such power levels.

You also have to look at the fact that when Goten was conceived Goku was fresh out of the time chamber and continuously stayed in the Super Saiyan form. So that could also be a factor to Goku and chichi conceiving Goten with enormous power possiblity.

this video is full of forced logic lol...1 goku never wanted to train his kids, he trained gohan because he had had to and by had i mean HAD TO. it's also not fair to comment on powerups in a peaceful future as even gohan became shit, and goten was still able to fight on par with trunks who trained much more even in the future. for the whole gt taking the body, yes you focused on him wanting to move from goten's body to gohan's body yet you quickly just went over how he also wanted to move from gohan's body to vegeta, are now now saying vegeta's body has more potential than gohan? as for creativity and the whole ingredients things, their is an element of truth but you are taking way too much from goten, the whole silly playful personality is from goten, the pranks are from goten so on and so forth. finally he never had the chance to build up a period of training followed by a period of great pressure all on his own to see his latent potential slightly being unleashed like trunks and gohan, but just because he didn't have an arc like that while others had, doesn't make it fair to say that goten doesn't have that potential to begin with.

I feel you can't take away that ssj was extremely natural too them,you can say that it was peaceful environment but goten went ssj because he gotcl mad and was push to do ssj,but gohan when mad multiple times didn't turn ssj,so in overall potential you can't ignore that ,gohan had learn ssj way older,the only thing that make gohan maybe higher potential is ssj2 that anger boost.I think in base goten was really strong without gohan experiences and if was train properly and didn't lack the well fight probably wouldav surpassed gohan ,the reason I think goten was so weak in end series was that he still went for chicks ,slack off in training and was less likely want train.If you take away all gohan experiences ,goten would be stronger age to age,gohan only got stronger because he needed be,goten was strong to begin with.Side note if goten turned ssj2 when chichi died that wouldav been crazy sadly didn't happen that way

THANK YOU for adding that Super retcons the original, now null-in-void, ending of Z. I've been saying that for so long and so many either don't believe me or just say "we'll see". No, we already saw. It's null-in-void. I think the real draw back is that Goten is never given the chance to expand his potential. He wants to go train with Goku on Beerus' world. Chichi says no. He wanted to train another time and she said no because of homework or something. Then, yeah, there's the draw back that he didn't have anyone to train with other than Chichi and Trunks for the first seven years of his life. And Trunks probably held back or enjoyed beating Goten. I mean, why didn't he teach Goten how to fly? As you said, he's really never been given the chance to get a rage boost. Closest in the series is when Majin Buu steps on egg Chichi but Piccolo stopped Goten before he get started. My boy needs the opportunity for potential!

I feel like the only reason goten's potential is never realised is because of bad writing. I mean they never use goten for something serious. Talking about rage boost, he was never really in the same situation as gohan or future trunks. Even when his mother was killed by buu piccolo told him that she could be brought back by the dragon balls. I think an arc where goten realises he's position and decides to leave his father's shadow would be great.

I think the whole potential over training and hard work thing defeats the purpose of dragon ball and Goku. Goku didn’t have “hidden potential” he had hard work and more than anything, passion. Which I think is a main factor

People saying he is stronger because he achieved super sayan sooner : this is not an argument. Future trunks and kid trunks have the same DNA, yet achieved it at different times. If you try to justify it differently than "it's because they did not have time to introduce it properly in the story", it just could be that having people around you that are able to transform makes it easier. Just like it is easy for you to know pythagoras, but this guy had to be super smart to think of it at the time Same for future Gohan : adult Gohan could destroy super Buu and was stronger than ssj3 Goku, but future Gohan was not as strong as Vegeta in the cyborg arc So no, transforming early doesn't mean anything. Truth is there is no way to know Goten's potential as we can only know it when another character feels it (Goku telling it for Gohan) or when the character shows it himself (like Goku or raging Gohan)

Goten may not have shown rage bursts like Gohan or even future Trunks in DBS, but he never had an opportunity. Goten benefits more from sparring against Trunks, but not as much as Trunks did training under Vegeta and in the gravity chamber. The base power you're born with, rage bursts and how fast you can gain strength through training determines your potential. While Gohan was born with lower power level, he had incredible rage boosts. His sheer determination allowed him to go from base goku level to matching goku in SSB form. He also tied with Kefla in the manga. Gohan has shown greater potential in unlocking new forms and get stronger faster through training. While Goten hasn't displayed rage boosts yet, has he ever trained seriously? Who is to say that he can't get stronger faster than Trunks through training?

Sure, Originally the End of Z implied that during the 10 year time gap it was nothing but peace which is why Goku hadn't seen Vegeta and Bulma in so long. But in Dragon Ball super, Bulma has seen Goku numerous times and there hasn't been a huge hiatus in the characters seeing each other. Super basically plugged itself into the 10 year gap and filled it with events so it's not completely peaceful.
