I think without realizing it you guys answered your own question. Gohan goes through long breaks of not training and can get more powerful than he was in the buu saga in one day. Trunks constantly trained and recieved zenkais, and is only a little stronger than an untrained Gohan? Gohan wins clearly in potential. He was always meant to be that guy.

Gotta say Gohan has more potential. Future Trunks works his ass off every day; but Gohan has long periods of slacking off. Then when it comes down to the wire and Gohan is forced to fight again, he trains to the point he needs to become relevant. I think that without Goku and Vegeta to lean on and Future Trunks' training regime, he would easily surpass Trunks in power just by default.

Zephilia S well if were gonna talk about them as they were before each of them had their power jump from zero to a hundred then trunks was stronger atm before Gohan trained again. When he came back to the current timeline gohan was weaker than he was when he fought cell supposedly and trunks was ssj2 but after Gohan trained for less than a day he became just as strong as blue in his mystic form... and then Trunks goes super saiyan rage blue over here outta nowhere, so they both acheived god level with little to no training compared to the harsh training Vegeta and Goku did to get where there at. Trunks is my fav but i think they both are kinda equal in their own way with gohan having a little bit of an edge on Trunks due to him having support trainers to help him and trunks having no one at all but himself. I look at Trunks and gohan just like i look at Goku and Vegeta, they both have their strong points and downfalls. However Gohan has been involved in fights his whole life from a young age. He has had more training with Martial arts and masters (piccolo/Goku/elder Kia). He has more fighting experience in general than trunks. Trunks didn't start training or be involved in any fights until he was trained by a washed up Gohan, and Vegeta barely trained him. He wasn't even trained properly by the Kia's. The elder was the real master, but was locked in a sword. Trunks just got knocked around 90% of the time and has never had any of the opportunities to improve like Gohan. Yet trunks ends up more powerful with less battles and less training. People like to say that trunks has had more near death moments then Gohan, which isn't true.

You can shadow box and mental train all you want its no where near the same as sparring. And he started training as a teen. He had less years of formal training. Also note that he never got his "potential" unlocked by the elder in namiek or elder Kia, yet his stronger then. I'd argue if he had the same power boost "steroids" as you described he'd be way stronger then he is now.

In the manga, Future Trunks was already a super saiyan as a young child when we saw him, but we don't know exactly when he reached it, while he was in his early teens when he first transformed in the anime. Present Gohan reached super saiyan at about 9 years old. This is tough, because it's hard to tell exactly when Future Trunks first transformed in the manga. If we knew that, we could have a better answer but looking at the feats, they both may have equal potential.

I'd say Gohan still has room to grow, and Trunks just continues to improve; Trunks was capable of defending himself against Zamasu and Rose who previously knocked out Goku, push back Zamasu's Holy wrath albeit not alone, and fending off and circling around Merged Zamasu in their final clash. Gohan is stated to have more power to gain by Piccolo right before his fight with Goku and Tien; he managed to counter Ssjb Goku (who had been slightly slacking off in training after the Future Trunks Saga) with the same amount of ease as Ssj2. Here's how I see it: both are stronger than Ssb. Trunks has always risen up to meet the challenge in hjs timeline and learned different techniques from mere observation. He seems to be able to unlock more power, the more angry he is. Gohan hasn't hit a ceiling yet and has more room to grow, and seemingly had limitless potential. But that was likely because at the time when the Z-fighters started seeing his potential power it was too high for them to fathom. His potential is probably not truly limitless. In terms of being a combatative warrior, Trunks has more potential; but in terms of natural strength, that honor belongs to Gohan. But as of right now, in the series, Trunks is likely the stronger of the two (not including the Sword of hope 'cuz that was borrowed energy)

Don't get the hate for Trunks in this comment section. People saying Gohan is flat out stronger/more potential than Trunks give Gohan MAD praise, yet shite on Trunks where his credit is due. Trunks has no one to train with, yet he trained himself when he wasn't with the squad like he was with the androids and cell. Even Goku said he was surprised how Trunks got all by himself, considered all of the other saiyans/half saiyans and Z Fighters were gone. I know Gohan wanted to be a scholar, but don't give me that excuse, when Trunks probably hates the fact he's Earth's first and last line of Defense, with his moms backing here and there. Both Gohan and Future Trunks played important roles during the Android/Cell saga, Gohan defeated Cell and Future Trunks defeated Androids 17, 18 and Cell in his timeline. During the 7 years after the Cell Games, Gohan had kept up some of his training, but he struggled to go SS2 during the Tournament saga. Thanks to Old Kai's training, Gohan was able reawaken his Hidden Power had a higher level. Future Trunks on the other hand has no excuse for being somewhat weak in DBS. He should've gone to Kami's Lookout and trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber since he had been to it in the past, that is if the Lookout wasn't destroyed by the Androids or Goku Black.

It's not really that. What bothers me are the instant powerups. It feels like Trunks earns his own development by going through more or less a hell on his own in a terrifying future. Gohan gets tapped on the head (Guru) on Namek, or spars with Piccolo a day after cutting fighting to focus on academics, but instantly is back in powerhouse action. All i'm asking for when it comes to Gohan is a journey. Granted the Cell arc was pretty fantastic in that regard, little has compared to it lately. Trunks, on the other hand, more or less does the lone wolf again and again against horrible odds and survives. That's more compelling story telling imo.

Quimper111 I think the problem is the writer doesn't think things through. There appears to be a massive difference between trunks time line and the more commonly featured timeline when it comes to power. When trunks comes into contact with the regular timeline he gains the same instant power ups Gohan gains. The guy went from getting tossed around by base Goku black to fighting on par with rose black and Zamasu after briefly training with Vegeta. He even acquires a new form(super saiyan rage) and managed to do what even Vegito couldn't which was to defeat merged Zamasu, well his physical form at least. This goes to show that Gohan and Trunks get unexpected power boosts when both are in the same timeline. Yeah Trunks story is better I agree.

Future Trunks is just a version of Trunks from a future, so he was born with the same (initial) amount of S-Cells as Present Trunks, but their different lives caused them to achieve Super Saiyan at different ages. Anyway, Future Trunks was born as a hybrid who has the capacity for developing into a warrior greater than Gohan and this is indicated through many out-of-universe statements, Trunks and Goten's hidden abilities in the Buu arc, and even Future Gohan in "Trunks the Story." Future Gohan: "You’ve improved a lot, Trunks. You might even leave me in the dust in a few months." However, the reasons for why Gohan is treated like he has the most potential is because (1) Gohan is more favored by Toriyama (and fans), so the writers simply give Gohan more opportunity to shine after the Buu arc, and (2) Gohan has more rage in him than Goten and Trunks. Rage is a crucial step in Saiyans their unlocking power. Although Goten and Trunks are clearly shown to have more latent ability going SSJ younger and easier, Gohan is more capable of bringing out additional power in critical moments. Remember, Goten witnesses his mom get killed by Buu, yet he doesn't "lose it" anywhere near the level that Gohan would. Same with Future Trunks witnessing Goku Black kill Future Bulma. Future Trunks does have immense rage at times (as shown throughout the Future Trunks arc, the Cell arc, and the Trunks TV special/special manga chapter). He's lived through the apocalypse. I think Future Trunks, in terms of overall dormant ability, is a stunted version of Trunks, but he has more anger bubbling inside him (or at least a greater capacity for rage due his different life).

Is not that hard to answer. Although Trunks is definitely stronger in the Zamasu arc Gohan clearly has more potential. He only spent 1 day fighting with Piccolo and gained his Ultimate form back, meanwhile Trunks spent presumably months or even longer fighting Zamasu and gained this rage form. I think Trunks has more potential. Gohan needed his potential unlocked and so his progression wasn’t natural. We see in the Future Trunks arc that SSJ Trunks succeeds where Gohan failed in defeating the androids and is a much younger age (and before Gohan had his potential unleashed). We also see Kid Trunks in the main timeline is equal to Goten, who has an even greater potential than Gohan. The thing with Gohan’s unleashed potential is that it’s the closest thing to ultra instinct outside of ultra instinct itself. That was a gift that was granted to him. How far would Trunks have gone if he was awarded the same power? I also contest that Trunks was training all those years. I think his lifestyle was that of a survivalist and that feasibly speaking, how would he have been able to train with Gohan during the the time of the androids without being detected? Cell then came shortly after when he was working on meeting Goku (so he didn’t train then), and Buu showed up not long after, relatively speaking. So just speaking in the case of a timeline, his future self was never really close to death that we’ve seen (so I doubt he had very many zenkai, if any at all), and I doubt he had very much training given the conditions of the world he lived in: Even still he was able to impress Goku and Vegeta in their day of training, learned enough from that experience to go rage mode, and had a competitive display of skill and power against Black and Merged Zamasu. Was rage asspull? I don’t think so. His SSJ forms are shown in both the anime and manga (especially the manga) to be vastly more potent than either Goku or Vegeta’s, and although it’s not confirmed, his rage form looks like it’s using God ki from just a single training session with Goku and Vegeta, and had a practical understanding of its usage and application when he fought Black and Zamasu whereas Gohan has spent a lot of time around both Goku and Vegeta and is still using the same techniques. Him spending a day training with Piccolo and trading blows with a Blue Goku who was obviously going easy on him is not only asspull, but Goku EASILY dispatches Gohan when he decides to. Mystic Gohan is nowhere near Trunks.

The thing is that, Future Trunks is constantly in shape, constantly fighting in his future timeline and works really hard for his power. But then when it comes to Gohan, well, his power comes more naturally and faster than Trunks. Only a few days of training with Piccolo and Gohan went from rusty fighter to god like saiyan fighter. I think it has something to do with the Goku and Vegeta family trees. Goku's lineage has power come more naturally to them whereas Vegeta's lineage they have to work far harder for their power.

Dakota Shomaker I don't think Trunks would get bodied by pre-ToP Goku SSB. In fact his feats against Merged Zamasu were better than both Goku and Vegeta SSB. But you're missing the point entirely. When Gohan was backed up into a corner, instead of breaking his limits (like he did against Cell by going SSJ2), he couldn't figure out a way of winning. He lost and took Dyspo out with him, but that's not a win. Trunks on the other hand broke his limits twice. Once with SSJ Rage and then again with the Spirit Sword. @@MystiQ61 Giving you a heads-up, this is gonna be a long read... Future Trunks didn't kill Goku Black. Xeno killed Merged Zamasu, which means Xeno killed Goku Black. Allow me to explain why Gohan has more potential than Future Trunks in the manga... Super Saiyan 2 Future Trunks is able to fend off Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black and Immortal Zamasu on his own. This is after Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta gets bodied by Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black. Because of this, there's an argument to be made that Super Saiyan 2 Future Trunks is marginally stronger than both Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta for a short time based on his showing against SSR Black. That's open for interpretation, though. For simplicity's sake, I'll say Super Saiyan 2 Future Trunks is a little stronger than Future Trunks arc Super Saiyan Blue level. Due to a possible Rage Boost. This is Super Saiyan 2 Future Trunks at his strongest. However, this advantage is only temporary. Vegeta trains in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber shortly after this encounter and wrecks Goku Black in their rematch. It's safe to say that Future Trunks is left far behind at this point. As we know, Goku and Vegeta get more powerful during and after this arc; Super Saiyan Blue or otherwise. Not to mention, both Goku and Vegeta get even stronger throughout the Tournament of Power as well. I'm not gonna factor that in, though. Fair enough? Let's move forward... Legendary Saiyan Kale is able to go toe-to-toe with Super Saiyan Blue Goku. We know that Goku can reach Perfect Super Saiyan Blue. However, he opts to stick with Super Saiyan Blue, and Kale seems to be giving Goku a bit of trouble. Goku even says that Kale's power keeps increasing while she's in her Legendary Saiyan form. She even manages to knock Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta off his feet. Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta are both initially stronger in the Tournament of Power than they are in the Future Trunks Saga as a whole. Which means they're both stronger than Future Trunks. This was previously established, but it's important to reiterate in order for me to get my point across. Legendary Saiyan Kale is potentially stronger than Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. Makes sense, right? Good. Let's keep going... Caulifla and Kale end up fusing and become Kefla. It's pretty obvious that Kefla is much stronger than Kale as a whole. It is a Fusion, after all. Yet... somehow, Super Saiyan Kefla and Ultimate Gohan are dead even. If you see the panels, they're literally trading attacks. This isn't one of those "I'm gonna wait to show you my true power" ordeals, they're both going all out. Kefla even acknowledges that with all her power, being fused; she can't even beat a single Saiyan. That's pretty telling. Future Trunks, in a span of 10+ years constantly trained, and his power never decreased. On the other hand, Gohan's power plummeted twice, and he still managed to go blow-for-blow against Super Saiyan Kefla. All this also happened in a span of 10+ years. I think Caulifla and Kale (as well as Kefla) are shit characters, but there's no denying how powerful she is. And Gohan was able to fight her to a standstill. Here's some dialogue from the manga that literally acknowledges Gohan's vast potential... Vol. 8, Page 104; continued onto Page 105 (Keep in mind that Kefla is transformed during this exchange...) Kefla: Heh! You sure you don't need to go Super Saiyan for this? If you even CAN? Gohan: I don't do that anymore. No need to really. Vol. 8, Page 106 Piccolo: That's Gohan for you. Regaining his sense of battle was all he could do in that brief period of training, but... he's managed to grow stronger than ever DURING this fight. Krillin: Whoa! Talk about innate talent. Makes you wonder if he could get stronger than Goku if he quit his day job and devoted himself to training? Weakest to strongest... Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta (vs. Goku Black, first time) - Future Trunks Saga Super Saiyan 2 Future Trunks (possible Rage Boost) - Future Trunks Saga Super Saiyan Rosé Black - Future Trunks Saga Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta (vs. Goku Black, second time) - Future Trunks Saga Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta (equal) - Tournament of Power Legendary Saiyan Kale - Tournament of Power Ultimate Gohan and Super Saiyan Kefla (equal) - Tournament of Power The evidence is all there. Whether you choose to believe it or not is up to you...

The thing with trunks is just he wasn't get in the tournament to show his rage strength against all others.. As future Zeno was there so I might say he also should be there with all..

Even before the spirit sword, trunks was fighting on par with ssb goku and vegeta while in ss2. Trunks all the way, Gohan let himself go. Had Gohan kept training then possibly Gohan would be stronger though

This is such a hard question to answer because of the baseline for both characters. What I mean is that they are both strong half-saiyans but when put under different training circumstances and moments of stress, the bar fluctuates. It’s also a question of the question itself. Are you asking: if Gohan and Trunks fought as they are currently, who would win? Are you asking: if Gohan and Trunks were training the same regiment at the same time, who would come out on top in the end? Like say they spent time training super hard in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, who would come out stronger? Are you asking: if Gohan and Trunks switched places (i.e. Gohan fighting Cell vs Trunks fighting the androids - type situation) and were put under the same stress the other person was, would they be stronger as a matter of genetics? Are you asking: If it was Trunks who trained under Elder Kai and got a Mystic form like Ultimate Gohan (or Mystic Gohan) would Trunks be stronger? Are you asking: Would either of them be able to train hard enough to fight someone like Jiren? The reason I personally find this question so hard to answer is because the perspective and baseline is so fidgety. And the timeline doesn’t help either, it just makes it more confusing. Especially since Future Trunks is still technically younger in age than our Adult Gohan (to clarify, not Future Gohan) Heck, to top it off, think of Kid Trunks vs Teen Gohan. Kid Trunks (I think) got super saiyan way faster and easier than Teen Gohan. I think I’m choosing to answer this as: if Gohan and Trunks were to be born at the same time, and had the same mentors and training regiment: I think Gohan would win. But I don’t have evidence to back that claim as to why I think Gohan has more potential to become stronger in a future scenario / timeline. Ugh, so confusing. But such good brain food.
