Yeah, for sure. Arkham has the best environmental and atmospheric storytelling. City has the best worldbuilding and the best plotting (and ending), Origins has the best character writing and overall depth, and Knight feels the most epic and and is probably the most thematically complex. Because of this, people can prefer and of these stories the most. It really does boil down to what aspect of a story is most important to you (environment, atmosphere, tone, worldbuilding, plot, characters, dialogue, stakes, theme, pacing, etc.)

One thing I really like about the Asylum story is that you, Batman, don't immediately know the reason for the Joker's escape and the Titan formula, and it's through Oracle's investigation and Batman's deduction that they discover it. Knight is my personal favourite, Scarecrow and Red Hood are some of my favourite characters so having them play such big roles was awsome to see. The stakes ans scope of the game was also amazing. Also, I don't see this brought up anywhere, but I think Knight handled side missions the best. Not to say they were overall better than the other games, but they were better intergrated into the story. City sets the stakes so high that anything you do outside the main story feels like wasting time when there's more important work to do. While Knight has intervals where the situation calms down and they encourage you to "take back control of the city" which make the sode missions feel more intertwined with the narrative. Especially since many of them are directly connected to the main plot, like all the villians having truces with each other to destroy Batman

Honestly.....I CAN'T CHOOSE. ALL OF THESE 4 ARKHAM STORIES ARE ONE OF THE BEST BATMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, and I'm not saying it because of a nostalgia, it's because they tell deep, mature and true to the character stories and it feels like this is a sucessor to Batman The Animated Series. Each of these stories has distinct feel and style: Asylum: Outlast (before Outlast) style Horror; City: Atmosphere and feeling of being trapped, as well a little bit of spy thriller; Origins: Christmas Crime Story; Knight: The Hero's Epic Final Stand; And all of this was amazing. I remember being so disappointed by Arkham City's story. It's a great game, but the story was such a missed opportunity. The whole premise was a section of the city being turned into a giant prison which is such a cool idea, but the story almost has nothing to do with it! It's all about finding the cure for Joker, a little bit with protocol 10, then back to Joker's cure again. Think of what they could've done with a premise like City's. You could've had a plot where Hugo Strange built it to lure in Batman, knowing he couldn't resist, and use it to slowly break him down mentally, and the whole thing was one big trap. There could've been a mass breakout attempt. Anything other than Strange wanting to kill criminals and finding Joker's cure.
@relarin952 Жыл бұрын
It felt like such an unnecessary twist. If Joker and Strange had been their own fully fledged villains and competed with each other in a sense without Ra's, that would've been so much more intriguing.

I love that origins didn't just go "8 Assassins=8 levels" it was very clear that some needed more focus than others, hence they were split from main story to side missions. The side missions weren't just a distraction from the plot but was all weaved together

Origins' story really felt like it was a movie level project. Batman becoming a hero, the start of Joker and Batman's legendary relationship and adventures, the incredible side-villains, the Christmas charm and an extremely immersive and memorable Gotham map just came together really well in this game. It felt like a classic Batman movie that encapsulates everything a good Batman story should have.
@crazydud3380 Жыл бұрын
Yes, Origins is the best story, for the reasons you stated. In the other entries, the characters are mostly static, but here both our hero and villain have an arc. Batman goes from angry loner to stoic leader, and Joker goes from wanting Batman dead to wanting Batman to stay alive so that they can continue their "game" together. And yes, Bane is perfect.

City is the best all around game but I’ve always thought it’s story was just a wild goose chase with like 10 different fetch quests. It has great moments but some painfully obvious moments of trying to slow down the story. My ranking would go: 1. Origins (Great with minor flaws) 2. Asylum/City (Good with some glaring flaws) 3. Knight (A mixed bag of good and bad with some incredibly questionable moments of storytelling)

Because Knight is a collection of plot holes. I love the game, I replay it at least twice a year, but its plot is lackluster to say the least. Why is Batman infected if he drank the cure in arkham city? Why the infection suddenly turns people into joker, when the "disease" that was killing him was caused by the Titan? Why Robin has to research a new cure, if the disease was caused by Joker's infected blood, to which Batman already find a cure in Arkham City? Couldn't he just synthetize more of the existent one? How is Batman able to kill the joker inside him, without taking any kind of antidote/cure?
@Cameron_910 ай бұрын
Arkham Knight is a pretty good game but the story isn’t good with it getting worse and worse the more times you replay it and think about especially as a finale to the series. Arkham city sets up Hush, Scarecrow, and Harley Quinn’s baby to be major plot points in the next game just for them to scrap harley quinn’s baby and relegate hush to a 5 minute side mission. While Scarecrow is the “main villain” and is the best part of the game he’s only in it for 20 MINUTES. Which is crazy how under-utilised he is. Harley’s role is a complete disservice to her character with her for some reason wanting to love some strangers because they act like joker? And the Joker blood plotline makes absolutely no sense because how does having someone’s blood which yes is infected with titan disease turn them into joker? Shouldn’t it be killing them instead? Also Batman took the cure in city so how is he infected? Just because he has someone’s blood inside of him doesn’t mean he is going to act like that person. The Arkham Knight/Jason Todd doesn’t work well narratively in a world where the joker is already dead. His whole reason for hating batman is letting the joker live after torturing him and crippling oracle as he will never stop killing people. Also he is just pretty stupid especially during the cloudburst section. The biggest plothole I have with the entire game though is if the Arkham Knight/Deathstroke are the “Genius tactical masterminds” which we are told again and again why are the tanks unmanned?! Jason and probably deathstroke know batmans no kill rule so why doesn’t he utilise it by arming the tanks with people then batman can’t do shit about it. Instead he makes the unmanned and Batman can fight back without breaking his rule
@Cuthbert.10 ай бұрын
@@Cameron_9 you’re right the game has a lot of plot holes and missed opportunities holding it back, but when you take it for what it is, you can enjoy a lot of the characters, good voice acting, the world in the game, etc. What I think knight does very well is make you feel like Batman. I have Knight as the 3rd/2nd best in the series, only ahead of asylum, whereas some people have it ahead of Origins. City is my undisputed goat, and I love origins but that game is just fan service (which I can’t complain about). For me asylum can’t be the best in the series because it’s the blueprint, and everything evolved from there. Pretty off topic, but I prefer the Arkham series to the Spider-Man series, and any other superhero game series ever.

Turns out he was meaning Arkham Knight) but then was let down when it was Roger Craig Smith. BUT, I gave it a chance and god damn... am I glad I did. I have to disagree with the idea that Asylum had no stakes. Had Batman not stopped Joker's plan to release Toxin into the waters of Gotham, the effects would have arguably been worse than anything in the other games, what with all the city's inhabitants turning into titan monsters at Joker's command. I completely agree about Origins though. It DID feel like it came to a very abrupt end. It felt like the game was maybe 3/4 of the way complete, and that it needed more to feel natural. Great video though, it was insightful to see what you thought of each game's story!

I agree with your thoughts on Arkham Origins. I always play it first not just because it's chronologically the first game for the series, but just because of how fun it is too. The game just sets off a realistic setting similar to Nolan and Reeves' films. Bane in that game is my favorite version of him in all the Batman franchise. He definitely looks better than how he did in Asylum and City. However, him getting huge at the end of Origins did look silly. But still, having him look similar to Tom Hardy's Bane while giving him a mask similar to the one in the comics is just perfect. His fights in that game are done better than in Asylum. Deathstroke's boss fight was indeed better in that game than in Knight. It was amazing to see when Batman and Gordon's friendship start.

@@SoyboyPeter because it’s the most cleverly written, the most mature, the most loyal to character source material, the most expansive, shocking twists, iconic scenery, the most enthralling & exciting & very heartfelt throughout the whole game & most importantly.. NOT CRINGEY.

@@frankwoods9680 Two face stupidly let’s catwoman keep her claws. Which is the only reason she’s still alive. Joker doesn’t call off his men so Batman can return with the antidote quicker. Freeze destroys one of the antidotes for no reason at all. He could saved an antidote for Batman and Nora. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work on Nora. He easily could have held the antidote hostage to ensure Batman would go rescue Nora in exchange for him being healed. Harley reveals that Joker is keeping Freeze’s tech in the basement like a dimwit. Talia forms a stupid deal with Clayface Joker instead of straight up impaling him while he’s not looking. Hugo Strange inexplicably uses Waynetech security terminals at at his office located at the top floor of Wonder Tower. He want actually went out of his way to purchase a security terminal of his worst enemy and didn’t expect Batman wouldn’t be able to hack it. This is hardly faithful to these characters.

@@SoyboyPeterCatwomans claws are a part of her bodysuit so obviously that’s not gonna work, she’s also tied up, I imagine if he were to try & remove that she would’ve woke up & beat his ass. You’re talking about supervillains here, you’re literally talking about THE JOKER why does he do anything he does, obviously he knows Batman will just take out the henchmen, why are you trying to understand THE JOKER, he plays games. Yes Mr. Freeze could have used one cure for Batman & the other for getting his wife back, he’s supposed to be smart but I’ll put that down to a brain fart from Freeze but also!.. he’s a villain, he probably didn’t have faith in Batman to bring back Nora so tried to take no risk in letting Batman heal up & Joker noticing the change in Batman and killing Nora, because he’s madly in love. Harley is a dimwit because she is a dimwit. The Talia one is weird since she’s an assassin dealing with her sworn enemies.. criminals, when she could have just ‘killed’ Joker (Clayface) since she had the cure, but dialogue in the game states that Talia “doesn’t know who she’s dealing with” so she’s probably none the wiser to how abominable the Joker is thinking she’ll casually make this deal in return for the safety of her beloved, she was probably respecting Batmans ‘no killing code’ until she was captured & saw that even still Batman wouldn’t kill, so she made her point in front of him & then boom. Maybe WayneTech is the most advanced tech available but also he changed the encryption to Tyger security so I think that’s irrelevant, I also think he didn’t actually expect Batman to make it this far. But Freeze’s decision to do that was a very minor moment that had a very drastic effect.

A cold heart dlc, for arkham origins in awsome. The main campaign is really good and the dlc really puts the icing and strawberry on the cake. Love city too!

4:21 about that, i wish batman media recognise these 2 and nominate them as the respective successors of Conroy and Hamill, since one is passed and the other is loyal to his other half and swore he would only voice joker as opposition to Conroy both characters need official animated replacement and this would be perfect

Wow. Someone who gives Arkham Origins love 🤯 I love all of them. Preordered all of them & to this day I have replayed Origins more than any of the others. Definitely my favorite.

No moments of origins stick with me outside of Alfred almost dying and Bruce freaking out, but even that took me out of the story because *I* know Alfred lives. Same thing with Bane learning Batman’s identity. Very Bane, but *I* know it isn’t going to matter because of the other games. If it were actually the first game released then I could probably have felt more attached to it and those moments. City had big ol’ balls and the actual freedom to do whatever with the fate of characters. An unfair advantage, but one that creates so many pivotal scenes

The twist where Ras al Gul was behind protocol 10 wasn't that shocking to me. It seemed to fit in with his m.o. My issue is it was shocking to Batman. Ras al Gul shows up in Arkham City and Batman doesn't question it? Hugo Strange knows everything that goes on in Arkham but ignores the fact there are ninja assassins running around his super prison? Batman is supposed to be a detective but he's unable to put these pieces together.
@relarin952 Жыл бұрын
I just don't think Ra's really needed to exist in that game. Like if Strange was his own power house kind of similar to Scarecrow in the first Batman begins, would've worked so well
@spinny003 Жыл бұрын
He's a detective and relies on evidence to form his opinions on crime. He tries his best to separate emotion from crime fighting. That's why he prefers working alone. Maybe deep down he suspected Ra's to be involved but there wasn't enough tangible evidence for him to objectively prove this suspicion. I don't think Batman is an idiot for not seeing it sooner. Remember he's not perfect and one of his biggest weaknesses is being too emotionless. He learns from this mistake and becomes more emotional in Arkham Knight, being more ruthless against his enemies than ever before for example. Of course he still distances himself from his allies, but again he's not perfect. I think the Arkham version of Batman is a lot more complex than people give him credit for.

Soooooo hot take!! Arkham Origins is a great game ... now. I think people keep forgetting the story, the Joker twist, and the game pass are not the main reason the game was controversial. It was the sorry state the game was when they released it. Remember it was a PS3/360 game in a time where most people weren't downloading patches or connecting systems to the internet for more than online play. It took me a week to do the last mission because i found out the game crashes unless you approach the bridge from the direction he does in the cut scene. If i did not look it up, it would've remained unfinished. They eventually patched out all the gamebreaking bugs but that doesn't change the messy release

I agree with you entirely. The best story is for certain Origins. Its so underrated. I played through them all but I always loved how different Origins was from the rest. As you said Batman had actual Character development and that is what makes the story so great. The DLC was pretty good too, showing Batman's first encounter with MR. Freeze. I kind of wish Origins had a direct sequel that wasn't 2.5D... Well maybe someday.
@alexo_pog10 ай бұрын
also Origins on top of that has an AMAZING mr.freeze dlc, its a slightly tweaked rendition of the insanely iconic and acclaimed B:TAS episode "heart of ice", and dare i say almost lives up to its inspiration the wayne mansion fire, the mystery and investigation, the sympathetic villain, improved participation of Boyle, the atmosphere not to mention, its way longer than any single Knight dlc and introduces its own mechanics like the heated batarang, thermal gloves or freeze ray enemies

Origins hands down. It was super cool to see Batman grown up as a character, his emotions, his pure hate, his brutality and overall his overcoming, his struggling, his big W and much bigger L and then much much bigger W. And Cold Cold Heart DLC which consider by many Arkham fans the best DLC of all Arkham series. Definitely Origins.

1.origins: it took elements from my two favorite batman story’s (year one and long Halloween) and managed to put these particular villains together in a way that didn’t feel forced like some of the other games. 2.knight: bringing back joker again could feel like a crutch but they managed to bring a fresh take on it(joker is Batman’s Tyler Darden, What a great idea!). Plus making scarecrow a truly terrifying villain and reworking Jason Todd’s story a bit was just amazing! 3.asylum: while a more basic story then the rest it was executed with great efficiency. Slowly uncovering the conspiracy between joker and dr. Young while drawing from yet another great Batman comic just made the whole thing come together beautifully! 4.city: of course I absolutely love city but story wise it’s a convoluted mess. They couldn’t decide who they wanted the big bad of the story to be and it just has the feeling of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Again I still adore this game but story wise it’s easily the worst for me.

To me city still has the best story but ORIGINS IS SO CLOSE!!! I have loved origins more as the years as passed! I mean hell I used to play the mobile game all the time. The whole origin story and Batman’s arc in the game as he becomes the true myth, THE DARK KNIGHT is so well done! Bane before his brain dead accident, is done like he his in the comics. A smart man who is very aware of his “partners” and can take them down whenever. Gorgeous cutscenes (also I’m a huge sucker for Christmas themed things and Batman stories where he is a myth/new myth) great fights, the focus of each different character background is phenomenal, and the vibe is beautiful. IMO best detective work in the series. Also seeing Gordon and Barbara grow the relationship with a new Batman and seeing a game version of Year One basically is such a great idea. Don’t even get me started on how the whole one night to kill the bat with 8 different assassins that we know and love, and now we get to see on those 8 assassins shine. Now city is still my favorite of the Arkham games and still has an immaculate story, like how you said about the great leading up to and a phenomenal conclusion, but origins is really close to me!

For me, Arkham City still is the best game and has the best story, but Origins is extremely close to beating it. The Finales for both of them are amazing with the fight between Batman and Joker in the Chapel and The Clayface Battle itself (also Batman using a sword) being some of my favorite moments in video games.

To me it’s between City and Origins. I think City is the quintessential Batman story, it’s the best deep dive into the Batman/Joker dynamic with the two best iterations/actors of these two characters, the perfect blend of fantastical and grounded characters/atmosphere, a powerful and fitting conclusion, and unforgettable moments (Bruce crawling his way through the sewers to get to Ra’s, Protocol 10 and Alfred’s great speech, Joker’s death). Origins, as the name suggests, is an amazing origin story, and quite similar to The Batman, with Bruce growing more and more from the brute that cares about intimidating criminals first, to the protector of Gotham we’ve come to know in the Rocksteady trilogy, his relationship with Alfred, Bane at his absolute best, a fantastic atmosphere and a real emphasis on the detective side of things. One little thing that would make me put City first is the Joker twist, even though I like it, but it still feels a bit forced. Still a goated game just for this one line “Tonight will not be my end… BUT IT WILL BE THEIRS.”

Bro that isn't THE ENDING of Origins, that's the epilogue. "The ending" is a lot of things, from Batman and Gordon having their first full conversation and implicit agreement on being partners off the books, to Joker's obsession with Batman being born out of how baffled he was after Batman saved his life for the first time, to Bruce and Alfred making amends and Alfred wishing him merry Christmas. The video is good but that specific criticism was very stupid.

The "best game" is tricky because there are multiple factors to consider. Story, Characters, Gameplay, Impact, and Originality. Best story easily goes to Arkham City. Best characters I would give to Arkham Origins. Best gameplay would obviously be Arkham Knight. Impact would go to Arkham Asylum because that game changed superhero video games forever. Without Asylum, we wouldn't have the Arkham franchise, the Marvel Spider-Man games, the upcoming wolverine game etc. The game with the most originality would either be Asylum or City. Asylum because it was the first Arkham game and created the base DNA for the rest of the series. Or you could say City for completely overhauling everything that Arkham Asylum did and improving it whilst adding more to the series' DNA. I wouldn't give it to Origins because it borrows so many assets from Arkham City and only adds the shock gloves. And I wouldn't give it to Knight because the only major addition was the Batmobile. Beyond that it was just improvements to Arkham City's preestablished gameplay. Impressive but not too original considering the Batmobile has been a concept since Asylum. So adding up the points, the "best game" is either Arkham Asylum or Arkham City depending on which you think is more original. I'm slightly leaning towards City but I completely understand if you go with Asylum.

What I hated about Arkham City and Arkham Knight (and I guess, Asylum too, to a lesser extent) was...the convenience. -You need a Lazarus Pit. Lucky for you, it's right here in Arkham City. -You need this rare plant. Luckily, it's right here in the middle of the city (or in the sewer). -You need Ras Al Ghul who's normally in Arabia or something. He's right here in the part of Gotham that you currently have access to. Plus Batman constantly threatening " Do this or I'll burn every plant on Gotham." Just made me cringe.
