I think most people would think about doing so 5 seconds after he stated the issue. Cable isn't fully in, you hold the device for an hour would properly make you come loose just enough so that it disconnects. It's the device fault, but come on.
@Helvetica_Scenario6 жыл бұрын
That HDMI cable is clearly way too thick. It's not connecting properly because of it. By forcing it, you may have warped the connector. Like others suggested, you could try cutting some of the rubber off the top so it doesn't come in contact with the hinge.

ッ the designers chose to keep the HDMI out feature in the product instead of compromising and removing it all together or using the less common micro hdmi. The device itself is already what it's advertised. Giving the small form factor of the device, it's understandable that there may be clearance issues, however, blaming the company when you are obviously using a cable that is too thick to properly fit doesn't seem fair.
@Crazelord916 жыл бұрын
To judge the GPD Win by its HDMI output is a mistake. Honestly I think it's not a necessary add on, I personally have never used it, and wouldn't care if they removed the feature. If you want to play something on your TV that has big company design behind it get a console or a Switch (it can't do the same things as a Win, I mean it's better if big company quaility product is integral to you), but if you want an amazing portable gaming PC that actually does what it's meant to do very well at a reasonable price, get the Win. Edit: This is one of the few videos I actually ever hit dislike. The more I think about how he used a HDMI cable that was obviously too big and forced it in when even the least tech savvy people could figure out basic sizes and shapes, is way too focused on a very non essential feature, how it's a small independent company product that really can't be expected to take the same kind of obtuse abuse as a big company console, and too bash their product for such easily avoidable issues when you have influence to affect the sales of the best quaility product they could realistically make, is myopic and dissapointing.

GameHunter3D Not saying it isn't a good feature, it seems great if it's useful to you. But to bash the Win so much based on its HDMi output capabilities bothers me. I see it as more of a lucky add on than a criteria for quality

Crazelord91 You're totally right, I would have bought it even if it didn't come with an hdmi output. But now that I used it so many times I'm glad that they added it. @help89986 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, if it’s part of the product, it should work, however, I do agree that a lot of people wouldn’t use the hdmi, but those people wouldn’t care about the issue, and as he said, he’s reviewing it. It’s his job to judge it.

Buy a cheap Mini to Full HDMI Adapter, they're usually super small on the Mini HDMI side. But either way you shouldn't captured via the HDMI, as soon as the screen backlight turns off the fan will stop working because it's connected with it for whatever reason. And when you expand the desktop to the HDMI it won't work well either because the games running on there won't run as well as they do on the internal screen.
@Thornskade5 жыл бұрын
The fan isn't really necessary, but if you want to have it on you can at least dim the screen. I haven't noticed games running worse on an external screen. Perhaps you just used a native TV resolution of 1080p, while the Win's own screen is 720p. At double the resolution, of course games would run worse.
@AaronALAI6 жыл бұрын
I believe you are correct, that it is a hardware issue. I'm hypothesizing that your original cable physically interfered with the hinge (like you pointed out) and stressed the solder connections of the HDMI component. The video looks like the HDMI receptacle experiences a mechanical moment when any HDMI cable not thinner than the hinge will allow is plugged in. In my experience it looks like many others may have this issue as well, as the clearance doesn't look to allow most normal sized HDMI plug heads. At this point you would have to take the thing apart and inspect/repair the solder connections of the HDMI receptacle to the main board, to guarantee you have a connection all the time. Likely, the physical spatial gaps between the solder joints and board are influenced by heat (part expansion) and/or mechanical stress which is why the issue may be so in and out. If you modify the HDMI cable as others have suggested in the comments, I suspect it will work more frequently but you will still have issues.
@SianaGearz6 жыл бұрын
It looks like the plug doesn't go in all the way, like 2 or 3 mm short of where it should be. It needs to go in all the way for the spring contacts to mate properly. I think the heat expansion is not the way of the solder joints, it's minimal, but leaf springs can change shape remarkably.

What worked for me was one of two things: 1) trimming a little of the plastic off surrounding one end of the plug 2) buy a slim HDMI cable. I've noticed that many HDMI cables have varying plug sizes. Sometimes the plastic enclosure around the plug is thick and sometimes it isn't.

I have had a GPD WIN 1 since February. Your problem is the cable apart from slight damage to your mini-hdmi connection port after jamming that ugly cable you used. Get a thin mini-hdmi to hdmi cable or an all flat mini-hdmi to hdmi cable. As in both the cable and the cable conector are flat. You could also have used a usb-c to hdmi cable as that works too. But it may require tweaking if it don't works right away, so, if you are not up to do that, just go with an all flat mini-hdmi cable like I mentioned. On projecting the screen: If you only project the second screen, fan turns off because of a GPD WIN 1 design quirk. So, If you do that. do it with non-demanding indie games and emulators. Otherwise just use duplicate for everything else or extend if really needed.

You could try a flat HDMI cable, or one of those ones you can make into a right-angled connection in order to avoid the hinge. But, it seems like if you've been pushing the cable in hard then you might have made getting a connection impossible. It's still a hardware issue, but one possibly made worse by yourself. Have you tried getting in contact with GPD, see if they can offer a fix?
@necrokittie22916 жыл бұрын
i would have shaved the rubber down with a knife on the corner of the hdmi cable that hits the hinge before it broke the device.... because forcing a cable into a port slot will of course damage it. plus the cable is alot cheaper then the device.

@rehsab016 жыл бұрын
Symptoms sound familiar (particularly the part about having to push the HDMI plug constantly inwards). Perhaps you should let a technician check the GPD Win motherboard inside, as there could be solder crack ("dry joint") at the mini HDMI socket pins. Nowadays environmentally friendly lead-free solder are much more brittle. Also the amount of solder used is very thin. Physical stress stems from the weight and movement of the HDMI cable compounded with movement of your handheld. Have seen this solder crack often with surface mounted HDMI sockets, miniaturized stereo audio jacks and micro USB sockets (particularly if that socket is used for charging). Typically in those cases caused by repeated cycles of plugging and unplugging, as well as cable movement inducing stress at the socket.
@MikeBBlack4Life6 жыл бұрын
Not a software issue that's for sure. That HDMI looks like its not in all of the way and it might be bending the cables connection to the win device a little. If you are willing to do it. Modify the HDMI cable so that the housing is off and you can stick it in the win device further. That might work but if it does or not. That's way to much you need to do just to get the device to work properly.

Did you try it with a different and slimmer HDMI cable (different monitor/tv too?) Honestly I'm kinda confused, why didn't you just record it with a camera like you did now and back then? It's a mainly portable device and I actually don't care about the HDMI output that much (even if you want to show off the full visual quality). It's good to know that you're experiencing issues with it and I would've mentioned that but otherwise it seems to be working ok, right? Anyway the GPD 2 seems to be like a massively superior (but much more expensive) device. I'm done with playing games with outdated/low end hardware years ago on my notebook while on the go and wouldn't consider buying a portable gaming pc device anytime soon but it's good to see that they're trying to get much more powerful hardware in the device and is a proof of concept for other devices in the future.
