The sight of the ghost town, an agraharam which once was bustling with activity and which once followed a cultured way of life , now deserted was very saddening . House after neatly maintained house ....all locked up. The silence that now prevails here is deeply hurting. So also the critical plight that the weavers face , is a matter of deep concern. Long hours at the cycle charkha to spin thread for making saris , dhotis and lungis requires immense patience and stamina. The old ammachi attending to this labour intensive work, sitting in one position from morning to evening made me wonder how many people appreciate or understand how much effort goes into making the gossamer light saris. And to know that these weaving traditions are progressively vanishing due to stiff competition from power looms...really is very distressing . I hope the Ramasseri idli too does not meet a similar fate. It's obvious that the 300 year old tharavad is on its last legs. But what is saddening is the disrespect it's present inmates are showing to this grand mansion with its solid wood and stone structure....shameful to see how they have trashed up the place with a washing machine here, 2 gas cylinders there. This was once a magnificent tharavadu .They should treat the house with due respect. Hope the peaceful river too will not become a memory soon.
