@Alan West I can assure you Fergie wasn't the first to play a weakened side. The competition right from it's inception in 1960 was treated as an 'inconvenience' by most top flight sides - It only really started being taken mildly seriously when it was granted a Wembley, one game final. Just check out how many 3rd Div sides have made the final (some even winning it) for proof.
@craiggerrard51174 жыл бұрын
@@apathyintheuk265 That's true. In 1975, for instance, none of the semi-finalists were from the first division. It was always seen as a minor trophy but it is even more so now. @@apathyintheuk265 Yes, but that is not a good thing. The Champions League should be for champions only. The massive central funding, which distorts domestic competitions should be removed. Not going to happen though - the money has thoroughly corrupted football.
@apathyintheuk2654 жыл бұрын
@@craiggerrard5117 I agree but we've come a long way now for any chance of reversing the situation as it is. For decades, UEFA were trying to come up with a way of creaming the best of the top 5 or 6, maybe 7 European nations to create an 'elite' European league. They achieved that by making the old style European cup (a knock out competition) a more accommodating league format - Mission accomplished. You are aware that money dominates (all) sport, aren't you? You can trace that back to the 1970's when the FL in a desperate attempt to give the competition some credibility, upped the prize money for.... Yep - the Football League Cup.

The spine has never been replaced not sure White , Gabriel and Party are even nearly close to getting there . The 85/ 86 season when West Ham were doing well we played Birmingham away when they had West Brom away and we took about 4 to 5 thousand for a nothing game end of season game . The old bill said if we’d been in West Ham’s position we’d have taken nearer 20 .
